Introduction & RTJ

Introduction

In the world of Imprys, most of the population is capable of some degree of innate magical ability or knowledge of it. Enchanted items and scrolls are used by anyone, and the arcane arts play important roles in everyday life. The influence of the gods of Imprys, the Six Divine, is as common as the appearance of monsters and other strange beings. This massive planet is full of mysteries; a fact reinforced by the discovery of a new and dangerous tropical island-continent dubbed Newille after Arch-Doctor Richard Newille, a wealthy benefactor of the Arcane Collegiate Order and sponsor of the first expedition to Newille.

This is where you come in: while you are gifted, your whole life you have walked a troubled blueberry path. Whether it was getting kicked out of an institution, breaking the laws of your home country, or some other morally gray act, you have been sent through various prisons and programs since your most recent Big Mistake. But now is your chance for redemption and to put your skills to the test. You have been chosen to be a part of the Newille Expedition, one of six candidates selected from a wide and diverse pool.

Explore the continent and you are free to keep whatever you find. Survive and you are welcome to return home cleared of your charges. The expectation is that you won’t make it out alive but don’t worry - there is a long line of willing volunteers eager to take your place, watching and waiting behind the scenes.

Influences

DC (Suicide Squad, JL: Dark), Marvel (Avengers, X-Men, Mystic Arts of Dr. Strange & Co.), Elder Scrolls, Dungeons & Dragons, Diablo, Pokemon, Avatar: TLA/Korra, Hades, Souls-type games, anime, and other sources of pop culture. If you enjoy one or more of those, I think you will enjoy this game!

Note: Think of this game like a tough hack and slash looter based on the Influences listed above. However, this will be a more collaborative effort as I will depend on player decisions and input to push the narrative forward. Additionally, players who invest themselves into the game will get more out of it. Quests, side quests, odd jobs, downtime, upgrading equipment and runecrafting, building a stronghold, and more will all be implemented into this campaign sandbox. While your character may not survive, the resources and time they've invested will pay off for the next character you roll (a loved one or relative, a rival, maybe an apprentice?). However, killing your characters is NOT my main priority here: I'm more interested in letting the story unfold while blending combat, magic, and looting into a fun and rich open world.

Requesting to Join

Phase One: Interview & Writing Sample

Before I tell you, my hopeful candidates, how to apply, I want to be upfront and clear. This will be a HIGHLY selective process involving three phases towards acceptance. I have run games in the past before only to realize that the assorted collection of characters I had gathered were not exactly the idyllic heroes I had in mind. I am putting a good amount of free time, effort, and resources into this concept, so I hope any potential players are willing to do the same.

Ideal players will be prepared to:

  • Write a minimum of a paragraph (5-8 sentences) when necessary (typically outside of combat): preferred format is third-person past tense, with speech noted in a color of your choice (no red, goldenrod or orange) and thoughts in italics.
  • Be familiar with editing your own character sheet
  • Enjoy resource, needs, & time management: Thirst & hunger, resting to avoid exhaustion, side quests, and splitting downtime and exploration time are just some of the mechanics that will be implemented in this game. Survival is a ticked genre for a reason, after all.
  • Have fun and be willing to spaghetti engage in collaborative discussions with the Overseer about the State of the Game!
  • If this is you, then go ahead and fill out the following questionnaire. I’m looking forward to hearing from you all!

Questionnaire
  • What aspect of the game is most appealing to you?
  • What is your experience with D&D? Will you be able to manage your inventory and sheet on your own or will you need some extra help?
  • Which, if any, of the listed franchises under Influences are you a fan of? What do you hope to see from those Influences in this game?
  • Please give me one or two character concepts that have come to mind after reading through the available information.
  • Please provide me a one-paragraph minimum writing sample. Any source is fine but I want to know your personal style and capabilities.
  • Bonus Question! There are three keywords hidden throughout the available threads whose placement may have seemed odd while reading them. What are they?
Hint: The Overseer was hungry when writing up these threads.

Approved players will be given temporary access so that they can continue onto Phase Two: Character Creation.
