Gameplay Conventions 02: Performing of Tests

Resolving Tests and Actions is a very simple process:

 - You can always attempt any Test or Action, unless the GM specifically states that you require a specific skill or attribute for it.

 - If you have a Character Attribute that gives you a proficiency, it usually allows you a +2 on your roll result when performing the Test/Action.

E.g. anyone can pick up a rifle and fire it at a target; however, if you have proficiency with rifles (via the "Marksmanship" Character Attribute), you will get a +2 bonus when making the attack. On the other hand, when it comes to deciphering a document, you will auto-fail unless you have the required minimum Character Attribute like "Literati" or "Thulean Touch".

 - Each Test/Action will come with a Difficulty Rating (DR) which will be stated. In order to succeed, you must match or exceed this DR using a combination of your relevant base stats, plus whatever bonuses you get from your Character Attribute and/or item bonuses.

E.g. your character is attempting to shift a heavy bookcase to topple it down a stairwell and block it. It is stated as
Test Strength DR 30 (base stat: current Endurance)

This is read as follows:
 - This Test is for Strength
 - It has a Difficulty Rating of 30 to succeed
 - Your base stat that you start with is your current Endurance score; you then add whatever Strength-specific modifiers you might have to this number
 - You then roll 1d10 and add that
 - If the total amount is at least 30, you pass the Test

E.g. your character has a maximum Endurance of 28, but only currently has 22 Endurance after taking damage in combat. Your character also has a Crowbar (item), which allows you a +2 bonus in this case. The Test is thus calculated as:
 - 22 (current Endurance) +2 (item Strength bonus) = 24
 - roll 1d10 = 7
 - total score = 24 +7 = 31, against a DR 30

This means that your character passes the Test, and successfully topples the bookcase down the stairwell.

Most Tests/Actions will be listed in the same way, with clear (hopefully!) explanations if there is a different method needed for a certain attempt.

As always - feel free to ask questions if anything does not make sense!
