OOC: Setting Creation and Out of Character

My Initial Thoughts

In what decade does the story begin?
  • 2020s

In what city does the story primarily take place?
  • Real. The stories take place in a real-world city (Detroit) that has been changed by the presence of superhumans.

What makes this city different from every other city?
  • Pariah Ghetto. One of the city’s districts or boroughs is home to a large population of people who have superpowers and are feared for it.

Pick two/three words that best describe how the city feels
  • Dangerous
  • Dystopian
  • Run-down

How common are powered heroes?
  • I Saw One, Once. Most folks know that costumed heroes exist in the city, but few have any contact with them.

How often do superpowered villains menace the city?
  • They Show Up Every Few Months. On a day-to-day basis most people have nothing to fear from powered villains.

How does the general public feel about powered heroes?
  • These So-Called Heroes are a Menace. All powered individuals are dangerous, and the “heroes” cause as much damage as they supposedly prevent.

How do the authorities feel about powered heroes?
  • They are Loose Cannons. They may have done good deeds, but they operate outside the due process of law and aren’t accountable to anyone.

How does the media portray powered heroes?
  • Centers of Controversy. Powered heroes are a hot-button topic. News channels air debates about vigilantism, with pundits on both sides.

How often do superheroes die in the line of duty?
  • All the Time. Supervillains show no mercy, and to be a hero is to be a soldier on the front lines of battle; death is a constant peril of the job.

OOC: Setting Creation and Out of Character

In what decade does the story begin?

    2020s

In what city does the story primarily take place?

Real. The stories take place in a real-world city that has been changed by the presence of superhumans. (Personally I'm a fan of Pittsburgh, but I could go for others as well.)

What makes this city different from every other city?
Scarred by Disaster. The city suffered some catastrophe within the last 10 years, and the scars from that event are prominent throughout the city. Fill out SE27: The Catastrophe as that disaster.

Pick two/three words that best describe how the city feels
    Dystopian
    Run-down
    Verdant

How Common Are Powered Heroes?
I Saw One, Once. Most folks know that costumed heroes exist in the city, but few have any contact with them.
Other (fill in your answer in the Truths box)

How often do superpowered villains menace the city?
They Show Up Every Few Months. On a day-to-day basis most people have nothing to fear from powered villains.

How does the general public feel about powered heroes?

Respected, but Warily. Powered heroes do good things, but they are also dangerous. What gives them the right to work outside the law?
These So-Called Heroes are a Menace. All powered individuals are dangerous, and the “heroes” cause as much damage as they supposedly prevent.

OOC: Setting Creation and Out of Character

In what decade does the story begin?
-2020s

In what city does the story primarily take place?
Real.
The stories take place in a real-world city that has been changed by the presence of superhumans. (Miami, Florida. The Corruption of the state government has gotten so intense that violence and crime is a regular event, and police and other such agencies have become another gang.)

What makes this city different from every other city?
Organized Crime. The city is home to a vast network of organized crime syndicates, who have exceptional influence over the city’s citizenry, economy, and authorities. Fill out SE14: The Crime Syndicate as the most prominent syndicate.

Districts, Boroughs, and Neighborhoods
In the spaces below, fill in the names of some regions in the city.
Bad Neighborhood: Little Havana
Commercial Center: Central Business District
Financial District: Brickell
Old Part of Town: Ponce Deleon Drive
Quiet Suburb: Pinecrest
Trendy Neighborhood: South Beach
Other: Coral Gables-Very wealthy
Other: Coconut Grove-Fun night life
Other: Model City-minus the historic/cultural aspect of Little Havana with all the crime.

Landmarks
In the spaces below, fill in the names of some landmarks in the city.
Government Building: Golden Palace
Historic Building: 'Fountain of Youth' gardens.
Iconic Skyline Feature: Ocean view
Sports Arena: Miami Dolphins.
Tallest Building in the City: Charney Tower
Tourist Attraction: Amusement parks
Other: Golf clubs for the 1%

How does the general public feel about powered heroes?
Respected, but Warily. Powered heroes do good things, but they are also dangerous. What gives them the right to work outside the law?

How do the authorities feel about powered heroes?
They are All Criminals. Vigilantism is a crime. These powered individuals answer to no one, and the heroes are just as guilty as the villains. They should all be locked up, for the good of the city.

How does the media portray powered heroes?
Centers of Controversy. Powered heroes are a hot-button topic. News channels air debates about vigilantism, with pundits on both sides.

How often do superheroes die in the line of duty?

OOC: Setting Creation and Out of Character

So the one common element so far is a dark setting, bordering on dystopia. I've added a last group of players so we'll have to hear from them as well.

Feel free to post your character concepts here, so those who don't have one can see what types they need to gel with.

In what decade does the story begin?
  • 2020s

In what city does the story primarily take place?
  • Real. I'll vote for my home town Detroit. Since it's already on the list.

What makes this city different from every other city?

  • Pariah Ghetto. One of the city’s districts or boroughs is home to a large population of people who have superpowers and are feared for it.
  • Canada is oddly intolerant of super powers so a large number of Canadian powered refugees ended up in Detroit.

Districts, Boroughs, and Neighborhoods
In the spaces below, fill in the names of some regions in the city.
Bad Neighborhood: The West Side, huge residential sprawl bordering Dearborn. Pharia Ghetto is likely in here somewhere (triangle bounded by I96, I94, and US12 jumps out to me but IDK that area very well) the city wouldn't want them close to down town or near the trendy suburbs tot he north.
Trendy Neighborhood: Grosse Pointe

Pick two/three words that best describe how the city feels

Dangerous
Dystopian
Run-down

How Common Are Powered Heroes?
I Saw One, Once. Most folks know that costumed heroes exist in the city, but few have any contact with them.

How often do superpowered villains menace the city?
Villains of the Week. Every other day, you hear about a powered menace engaging in criminal activity, and the average person may have even been a bystander in such an event.

How does the general public feel about powered heroes?
These So-Called Heroes are a Menace. All powered individuals are dangerous, and the “heroes” cause as much damage as they supposedly prevent.

How do the authorities feel about powered heroes?
They are Loose Cannons. They may have done good deeds, but they operate outside the due process of law and aren’t accountable to anyone.

How often do superheroes die in the line of duty?
All the Time. Supervillains show no mercy, and to be a hero is to be a soldier on the front lines of battle; death is a constant peril of the job.

Wow, ya, very dark.

I'm touched by an eldritch force that degrades the fundamental ontological realness of reality. So lots of matter manipulation and duplication.

A darker contemporary setting seems to be one of the common threads we have all agreed upon. Lovely. I have submitted a character to fit just that, a physical powerhouse of an artificial being, with a tragic background and an alluring personality. Basically an alchemical clone created using the genetic material of a specific dead person.

I have yet to read the core Spectaculars rulebook, Sentinel Comics having proven far more captivating. The setting book, however, is just wonderful and packs a lot of goodness into its sixty pages. The first half is devoted to series creation, the rest provides a place to jot down notes about major and minor characters, as well as the 'publication history' (adventure outlines) of the series. It is essentially a workbook in which to record your 'series bibles'.

OOC: Setting Creation and Out of Character

Yeah, that's the reason I want to try to convert it to Sentinels. I prefer the system but I kind of fell in love with Spectaculars setting generation.

As for the Spectaculars system. It is a d100 based system that's very narrative. All the powers and skills are handled through physical cards that you attach to your archetypes. Each "campaign playbook" has different archetypes that fits the tone. There are four campaigns in it, Explorers of the Unknown (Fantastic Four/Avengers/JLA), Streetlight Knights (Marvel Knights/Outsiders), Eldritch Mysteries (Defenders/Justice Leage Dark) and Clash Among the Stars (Guardians of the Galaxy/Green Lantern Corps).

Each of the campaigns has around 12 issues and an Annual. And each adventure is loosely defined and you make a few choices in the beginning so two people running the same one can turn out quite different. And all of them helps evolve and define the world.

I had planned on running Explorers of the Unknown, but the more we have defined the setting and the characters, I'm feeling Streetlight Knights might be more fitting.
