Into the wastes

A lonely group of 500 horsemen stands huddled at the base of a range of craggy, dry mountains, the red light of a dying day casting long shadows behind them. A parched wind, still alive with the desert heat, rustles their capes over their sweat soaked leather armor. The horsemen have formed a circle astride their steeds and hunch down sadly against the sandy wind.

It is you, and a ragtag group of others that stands within this circle of grizzled soldiers, upon some sort of stone platform (20'x20') no more than a foot above the surrounding sands. The platform is marked with a large arcane Glyph chiseled into it's surface.

The last thing you recall is enjoying the richness of the capital city "Azir" of Rahadoum and absorbing all of its strange tales of wealth and greatness, or wallowing in a cell of said city awaiting judgement for your crimes. But now you are awake, confused amid these heavily shadowed faces under a deep red sunset.

The weathered face of the commander turns toward you, leather-brown skin setting off his steel-blue eyes. He pulls from his saddle pouch an elegant scroll and reads loudly over the rustling wind its flowing, formal message:

"Know ye! By order of his majesty the Sultan, ruler and trustee of the realm.

Whereas it hath been reported of late to our majesty that certain dark and vile desert raiders have crossed the terrible mountain wastes of the south, over long forgotten paths, thence disappearing into those same forbidding hills.

And whereas our valiant troops have tracked these same vile creatures through the very teeth of that awesome range to the very borders of the most accursed land, known to the wise as the desert of desolation, and being knowledgeable as to the curses of that dead haunted land, did our host of brave knights wisely halt their pursuit.

Now some of you have come here in the knowledge you have been sentenced to death or exile, for breaking the laws of this mighty empire, but in your wretchedness you will be given the final opportunity to serve the sultan who is majestic wise and merciful.

Furthermore, certain foreign characters, whose descriptions match those of the rest of you gathered here amongst this very group whom have been assembled at my most honored and revered request, were seen in the vicinity of the tent of Wan-doo the wonderous, wizard of the court, in the later part of the evening,

And whereas those persons did attain entry to said tent and did short-sheet the wizard's bed and do all manner of petty pranks, and did leave for the wizard a certain maid for an alleged date with said wizard. And whereas said wizard did return to said tent with yet another wench whereupon both the first maid and the second wench did begin a loud commotion and disturbance the like of which has never before shaken this stately court and upset the wizard to no end.

Therefore be it decreed that all persons here be appointed a special force under our majesty to track the course of the raiders from the desert of desolation, where surely even the raiders could not survive, search out their hiding place and bring us back proof that they have found that hidden fortress in the desert. We further decree that they may retain all that they bring forth with them for their own use from that fabled land of treasure and death and their crimes will be forgiven in whole under the condition they hence forth follow the laws of the land recanting their wicked ways.

Be it yet further decreed that if they prefer not this quest they may choose death by hanging, death by fireball, death by polymorph, death by flame strike, death by lightning.."

Rolling the scroll back up with his calloused hands, the commander leans down toward you.

"What this means, you poor scum, is that you have been chosen to enter that cursed dead land south of here. It means that it doesn't matter whether you were in the tent that night or not, because you are easy to get rid of without ruffling any feathers."

"And it also means,"

speaks the aged, though rugged, form beside the commander,

"that these here raiders have caused his majesty a good deal of trouble with the Barons. You're his proof that he is doing something about them.

Mawhahahahahaaaa"

His laugh rolls through the hills. The commander silences him with a sharp look, then continues.

"We have brought you certain supplies and mounts from which you may choose. There is no water within two weeks tortured ride over the mountains from this spot, and those hills are full of cutthroat barbarians that kill for the sheer joy of it. Without this armed escort, it would be suicide to attempt crossing back from whence we have come. Your only hope, for what it may be worth, will be to follow those tracks and hope that they lead to water or the bandits dead under the desert sun. You may prepare your selves as we will be camping here for while we perform our duties. "

His lifted arm points southward, and all eyes follow its direction. There in the desert sands, a confused trail mars the surface and leads straight into the heart of the burning land. Looking south across the barren wastes, lifeless dunes roll in an endless succession away from the mountains to the south, east and west.

You have heard tales of this place, none of them good.

"ALRIGHT MEN CAMP UP!"

Shouts the commander and his men begin to scurry about setting up tents a temporary forge and other facilities.

As the soldiers work you are left to your own devices the 10 other scum and foreigners standing on the platform begin to disperse you see a few go to the horse handler one points out one of the spare horses this small army brings with them he is given a tac and harness and saddle for the beast which he leads away to another area of the camp as it is getting unpacked and mobilized. A foreigner goes to a tent that has been erected as a smith for equipment and arms maintenance he gets a shield. Each time you see one of the condemned collect something from a soldier, the soldier takes out a note book noting it down.

The camp is soon setup and the efficiency and organization of these troops is apparent. They setout pickets and guards and even have some men repairing a low wall that secures one side of the camp. obviously this is a regular camp site for these hardened well trained troop that patrol these mountains hunting for barbarians and religious zealots.

Soon there are only 5 of you left on the platform. Two dwarfs, an elf, a half-orc, a goblin, and 2 humans

You move through the camp seeing how efficient these soldiers are, talking to a few soldiers you soon acquire a backpack and some other materials you know you will need. Eventually you come to a tent that looks like all the rest, the only differentiation is a plume of green smoke that whaffs palely from the tent. Sticking your head inside you see beakers and tubes with an old soldier working on what seems to be an antidote. He looks up form his work and sees Dr Rajeed in the tent opening. He says

"Yearssse? What is iiittt? Has someone else played wit a scorpion? I am getting tired of making these antidotes for your gambling games."

He squints against the light at you.

Vander follows the good Doctor, mostly to make sure no one bothers him. It seemed unlikely, especially as they where already 'condemned', but better safe than sorry. He does glare at the soldiers as they leave, no having much love for them or their ruler. The man who was the author of the Doctor's and Vander's fate.

Was Vander a criminal? Yes. Did he steal for poor folk? Generally not...and not just because they had nothing worth stealing. Besides, it was hard for a goblin to make a legit living among non goblins. Of course, Vander did not often get along with his Goblin kin either.

"Do they have quartroot? Running low on quartroot..." Vander said in his odd sing song voice, popping out out of nowhere behind the Dwarven physician. He had the habit of doing that quite often, as Goblins where very sneaky. Besides, the plant's poison treating abilities where much prized among his people.

10 days pass as you gather materials and craft items you think you may need for the journey into the desert. By this time all of the other condemned have left the camp and for those that remain the soldiers are no longer so amiable. They are becoming tired of your existence snapping at you whenever you’re underfoot. Numerous patrols have been sent out and returned. But there’s no word of those that have already ventured into the desert. Only your group remain and you have taken to camping together rather than risk the ire of the soldiers. The captain approaches your camp on the 12th night and speaks plainly to you.

“We move in the morning and any of you that remain will be put to death. Sleep well and I hope not to see you in the morning.”

Just threat is clear. You had best start your track into the shifting sands tonight or you will be killed upon the rise of the sun tomorrow...

Into the wastes

Among those standing on that stony platform, surrounded by the hundreds of horsemen, is a Elven lady dressed in local atire, quite obviously a local, from Rahadoum.
She looks Mid-20's but you can never tell with an elf, wearing ochre weather-beaten desert robes & sandals, he is both muscular and lithe.
Slung over her shoulder, he has an old, well-used, military field-medic's kit.
she carries a strong but slender staff, tapered at the ends and well balanced.
Those who can recognize this, know the staff is made of acacia wood, and is engraved with Pahmet, or Sand-Dwarf, runes.

Listening to the long-winded explanation, Oro shrugs, thinking that they could've just asked for people to go hunt those raiders.
She frowns when him being a criminal is mentioned, and she mumbles:
"I don't remember no crime. Just enjoying Azir..."
Aeris just shrugs, and looks down at the large arcane Glyph chiseled into the rock.
she tries to see what it is.
Arcane check or something?

Then, looking around to the others near her, she nods, speaking in Osiriani:
"I am Aeris. Greetings."
Then in Common:
"Or are you the foreign characters they speak of? I am Aeris."
She bows deep before the two Dwarves, and addresses them in Dwarven - well, you understand she thinks she speak Dwarven, but actually it is all garbled and makes little sense:
"Breatings boh plicked bones! Eeh arm Aeris!"

To someone who habitually spent extended stretches in stark desert, the camp was a veritable treasure trove.

With more time than he was used to, Lupine had scoured the camp for bits of tools and discarded articles.  His colorful garments, voluminous as they were, made him look like a rainbow cloud on narrow feet when he was about during daylight hours.  He favored the night more, especially when it came to any work beyond rummaging through gear.

"The time comes to leave every oasis.  Let us leave while the night still shelters us; traveling under the sun's hateful stare will be far less enjoyable."  He mentioned to his new companions, which was currently the longest conversation he had had with any one individual in the past two weeks.

Into the wastes

Obviously more Orc than human the large Orcish man though thinner than the stereotypical Orc style carried an imposing frame of toned muscle and obvious agility and athletic ability. He was brought with only garments to cover himself, all his gear taken. There was no need to wonder about the life the Half-orc lived, his body was covered in scars from claws, stabs, and slashes, nearly all the marks from the beasts he has hunted all his life. His tusks grow tall and strong except broken from a claw mark across the right side of his face the topmost having broken the tusk, the middle talons nearly taking his whole right ear off, and the bottom slicing just below his jawline. His skin stood out dark against the sand, not black, and not grey his skin tone falls somewhere between. And finally, the only adornment on him and the only thing he cares about for appearances is his hair. Shaved bold on either side a mohawk runs the middle of his head, the hair has been turned into long deadlocks that are braid reaching down to his lower back. Weaved in his hair are bones, sticks, teeth, and claws.

Each day he was given went testing the bows, each fletcher's arrow, and the temper and sharpness of the blades. Whenever a military man would regard him the only answer he gave a cold killing stare. Each morning the half-Orc rises early and travels just over a dune to pray to Gozreh, not in a typical way normally seen, but rather the way his tribe has worshiped him for hundreds of years. And each morning a tiger visits him, her body larger than is normal for her species her face and forearms scared. Her color is also strange she is a light golden orange with white strips and belly. "Hello, Shiva my friend, only a few more days and we will continue our journey. I do not know how my captures will react to your presence, so remain hidden and hunt, we will be united on a hunt soon." The companionship, and love obvious between the two friends.

Finally, on the last day, he chooses the composite longbow and shortbow, and the bastard sword he approves of. Also, he took many arrows, each hand-picked, and a horse on which he packed the arrows and a standard adventuring kit, also the rations that were given to him packed on the horse.

Gathering your things the party of 5 head into the desert. the rolling sands become monotonous by midnight even the mountains that were rising up behind you can no longer be seen. The only thing guiding you are the tracks left by the first group of the condemned and the raiders luckily there has been little wind covering these. A slight wind blows but it is barely enough to lift the sands from where they lay as for sound only the sounds of your equipment clinking and animals permeate the silence of the desert.

It is early in the morning (2 am) and you are moving by the light of the moon. You have been riding for six  hours when rising out of the gloom ahead you see 2 monolithic obelisks that stand 50' apart. As you approach you can see writing upon them. But you would need to approach closer to read what is written. The tracks continue between them on into the desert.

This is where we begin guys please post and I will move things as quick as I can.

Each player gets your choice of a camel, or a draft horse these are large creatures and 10 bulk = 1 Large bulk for them and they can carry 15 large bulk each or 150 of medium bulk.

- 3 large tents 10 feet x 20 feet in size totaling 150 bulk (50 bulk each), and take 40 min to set up

- 7 days of water for the entire party. (50 bulk)

- 1 x writ of authority to be in the desert

- 10 bundles of firewood (8 bulk each) 1 bundle give 1 nights fire totaling 80 bulk

- Food for the party (1 week of dried meat, and 1 week of dried fruit nuts and leaven bread) totaling 15 bulk

please let me know what you are riding.

Berethor the typical Lone Ranger with instinct and precision begins forming a plan, or at least his part in the group. For, he realized he was not alone, and would need this groups assistance if he wanted or liked it, the necessity of made his desires a mute point.

Clearing his throat before awkwardly speaking, his common heavily accented by orcish and obviously his second language. “The desert will provide, it will take me time. We have not much food, where others see sand, I find.” Without hesitation his voice matter a factly. “The others that left before, they carry much, and are not worthy. We may be able to track them, what is there’s can be ours. It is the way.”

For the first two days Berethor, now joining him Shiva, will remain with the group taking stock of them, he is not worried about getting food when needed at the moment.

Aeris has loaded up the camel with a tent, some water, food & wood.

Spoiler text: (Highlight or hover over the text to view)
Here is what I noted, but your Bulk figures for water & food up give fractions when divided by 7
Camel (84 Bulk, @150 = Encumbered)
1 large tent, 10 feet x 20 feet in size, takes 40 min' to set up (50 bulk)
2 days of water for the entire party (14 bulk)
2 bundles of firewood, 1 night's fire each (16 bulk)
2 days of of dried meat, & 2 days of dried fruit nuts and leaven bread (4 bulk)

Aeris nods to Berethor:
"Yes, the desert does provide! I am Aeris. You?"

Seeing the obelisks, Aeris will look around, scanning the moonlit desert as best she can, and approach to see what is written.
Doing so, she remains on the tracks they are following.

He eyed the orc-ling suspiciously.  Anyone out looking for a fight so readily could be dangerous to be around for multiple reasons.  "I'd not tempt fate.  Even if I were inclined, mayhaps they win?"

"You check for hazards; this one shall assist after searching for curses."  Lupine announced, pointing his knotted staff towards the pillars.  After a moment, he slid to the ground and examined the area more closely.

OOC: Lupine is taking a camel.  He's not entirely sure what a horse is, but they look fragile to him.

In terms of encumbrance, I calculated in the entire weight of a tent; either Lupine is sleeping alone or carrying the tent for his buddy.

It seemed a simple enough phrase.  Given the lack of detectable magic, Lupine wasn't going to let a baseless text stop him.  Besides.

The elf fished out his writ from within the folds of his loose garb and unfurled it.  "Pease be unto the spirits of this place; this one has been bidden to freely enter."  He announced to no one in particular, and simultaneously to all who may be watching.  Contented that he had covered any sanctified bases there might be - a field beyond much of his ken - Lupine strolled back over to his camel and mounted up, expectantly glancing at his companions.  "I am prepared, though this one would humbly suggest some measure of appeasement to the lesser gods before we continue."

Re: Into the wastes

Vander said nothing about the gods. They certainly had nothing to say to him. He accepted the idea they existed...there was too much horrible stuff running around and wiping people out to say otherwise. The question was where any of them any 'good'. Everything Vander had experienced made him think otherwise. At best they where just another powerful ruler, cruel when they wished and kind to those who obey. Vander had learned the hard way to keep those thoughts to himself...

Into the wastes

The mention of the Gods caught his attention. Spirits and the ancestors held a powerful place within his tribe. Honoring those that walked and championed before was needed to gain continual strength and blessing. It was taught by the Shamans from his earliest memory, there was only one god that took reverence among him and his people Gozreh. It was a bad omen to begin a hunt without offering something to Gozreh.

Nothing to offer. Berethor dismounts his horse and walks ahead of the group facing the direction of his tribe. In Orcish gives a chant used before all his hunts. Normally he would take his first kill or livestock they had and offer it. However without either he draws his knife across the palm of his hand, were a scar from previous offerings given in this way remains. Chanting the whole time he holds out his hand as the blood drips onto the sand, he then takes the sand now drenched in his blood and rubs his hands in it lifting his arms full of sand and blood above his head. As his chant ends the sand drops. With his fingers his draws a symbol on his face both of blood and sand.

“I have given an offering. We will be protected, and watched by my ancestors they will hear my call even across this great distance.” Mounting he goes forward leading the way through the obelisks.

Into the wastes

The Doc feeling the spiritual healing take a wooden star worm within his jerkin kisses it then holds it to the night sky allowing the starlight to fall upon it. He speaks in a clear resounding voice strange words,

“ सितारों की मां हमें इन कचरे के माध्यम से मार्गदर्शन और हमारे शिविर पर गर्मी और सुरक्षा लाने के लिए ।अपने प्रकाश हमें रास्ता दिखा सकते हैं ।“

As his words die the tip of the 10’ sick with a carrot hanging from one end, (he uses it to encourage Gertrudes movement) glows with the light of the stars. Illuminating 20’ all around and of course lighting up the prized carrot like a beacon to his camel. Her prize once again in view Gertrude is off moving at an even walk after her carrot. Looking back at his new companions over his shoulder the Doc shouts,

“By golly her blessings are still with us friends. ONWARD!”

As he continues to follow the tracks into the desert.

With a new light lighting the way you all continue into the desert. Hours pass and you must cover your selves from the chill of the night . This does nothing to moisten the air. The dryness leaving you all parched. The sky line to the east is lightening, the wastes that surround you seem never ending. It is as the suns first harsh rays fall upon you instantly burning the nights chill away, that you see it.. Ahead of you, a large stone obelisk lies askew on it’s side in the yellow grey sands. The tracks lead up to it then split half going north-east half north west. Again there is something written upon the obelisk but you cannot read it without digging away the sand that covers much of the text.

What now desert plunderers?

Lupine hovered closer, equally interested in the stone pillar.  His eyes seemed to be focused on the wrong areas to even detect writing, though he began to ponder other possibilities to the significance of the obelisks.  Perhaps the text was not so important as was the nature and structure as was the magical significance, or at least some arcane convention involving where and why to build such structures.

As the temperature falls in the late afternoon you are able to break camp and continue on your way. For six more hours you travel into the night your way lit by the waxing moon, and directed onward by the tracks that remain in the sand.

It is at nearing midnight when you all come upon the upper half of a statue that thrusts up from the ash dunes of the desert 100ft before you. The statues noble face is pockmarked and scarred by the ravages of time and sand. The statue seems to be holding a tablet, half berried in the sand, against it's chest.

The ranger has been scanning the sands for signs and better knowledge of what happened. Before him a story unfolded, he talks through his discovery, the whole while directed towards Shiva his Golden White Tiger.

“It seems their pace was normal approaching the statue. Then here, they begin to scramble, a tent falls off, as Vander discovered, most likely from something. But, what, see those holes girl, not from dunes, there hasn’t been wind in days and those are most unnatural. After the scramble the camels and horse gallop of at a quickened pace, running from the ambush, North pass the statue. Judging by the footprints it doesn't seem like they stood at the statue for long before attacked. Though, I can’t make out tracks that are different then what we have seen.”

Standing now he looks around and notices that the group is getting closer to the statue. He takes off his Longbow preparing one arrow on the sting and holding several extra in his bow hand ready for quick shots. He gives a whistle to Shiva as she fans out to his left circling keeping low staying just behind him 20ft left. Looking in the direction of the statue and ambush direction sidesteps to his horse and hits its hind quarters sending it back up behind him out of danger.

“You will want to speed up your interest in the statue, we may get company.”

Re: Into the wastes

As Berethor examines the ground coming to the conclusion that the previous travelers were ambushed and Lupine is examining what he found in the sands. The others each distracted by things they have noticed and are looking at them when Berethor voices his warning of danger close at hand. Doctor Rajeed spends a couple of rounds clearing the sands about the statue and stone tablet, then calling upon his god for aid tries to read the tablet.

It is as if the wrong god has heard him for there is a crack somewhere beneath the sands that rings out like a warning bell to all of you. The sands around the Doc begin to shift and move seeming to suck at his legs drawing him down. The doc is sucked down this vortex of sand that appears before the statue, and vanishes from the sight of the party leaving the statue more reveled. Now before the statue the sand has formed a conical crater over 20 feet deep to the bottom of which is a hole. The statue is unmoved by the shifting sands, it's base fixed fast to what ever holds it emplace.

Doc: you fall through into darkness landing and violently twisting your ankle, upon a great 60 foot pile of sand you slide down the edge finding your self within a 100 foot tall dome of fitted stone above a sand covered stone flagging floor.

The dome has cracked in a number of places allowing the sands from above to flow in, yours is the newest and largest hole. The entire area is lit only by a single shaft of moon light from the hole you made in the ceiling overhead. The silted dust and sand have spilled into the vast chamber where the dome has completely crumbled on the eastern side leaving a wall of sand with 3 dark cave like openings into the wall of sand. To the west a darkly stained dome leans on the top of a building that rises majestically up from the floor to meet the dome. Partially broken marbled steps lead up to the rubble strewn entrance of the building flanked on either side by mighty statues of dogs. Webs cover the dogs and pillars supporting the roof of the entry way as well as the entrances to the 3 caves to the east of the area.

As the Doc shouts for help, the rest of you hear his pleas.

[Private to Lupine Vedetian: The Doc's words cause something to click for you. The giant hair you found could possibly come from a deadly creature known to inhabit the dessert, ambushing the unwary travelers. Vander whips out his rope, and finds a place to anchor it. Once secured, he lowers the rope down for the good doctor. "Its coming down!" Vander calls out.

Ooc-as a tailed goblin, I am very good at climbing. Not sure how that would help others. Could i use my athletics to assist others? What DC would that be?

Doc quickly turns his hat inside out and places it back on his head, as he continues to treat his wounds. This exposes the magical light he had placed there, lighting an area of the sand dune he was on. Even as Vander drops the rope to him the doc continues to shout up at his friends as he binds his ankle,

"Golly gosh! there be a whole building down here and entrance of some kind, made of marble this is amazing.. yes!"

Re: Into the wastes

Lupine considered the rod-like object in his hand, and gave it a few testing swings and flourishes before packing it into the folds of his garments.  Such an article might be useful in certain enchantments; perhaps it would be the suitable base for any of a variety of wands.  Depending on what the rest of the beast looked like, perhaps the components for a staff could similarly be constructed.

"If messrs would be so inclined for a moment, this one urges caution of spiders in the area.  Great spiders."  He carefully approached the hole Rajeed had tumbled down and raised his staff.  "'Down' is perhaps not a wise choice, yes?  This one would expect that is such a creature's burrow."

The proclamation from below made Lupine consider for a moment.  "What will be done should messrs and this one descend, as regards to the camels and not-camels?"

Re: Into the wastes

Vander moves over to the hole, the statue makes the perfect anchoring point and is very stable. Lupine you move over to the hole, nearer the statue. With the light of the ion stone you are able to read the tablet held by the statue,

"My name is Maniozimus. Look upon the ruins of the great city of Pazar that surrounds you and despair. Here, great magic once was. Now you see only the mighty ruins of mans works."

Looking around with the light of the moon you see no ruins.. Only mighty sand dunes rising up to a height of 300' surround you in this area of the desert, even now you stand atop one of these monolith dunes.

While down below Doc you hear some clicking coming from somewhere amongst the pillars that surround the entrance way to the building.

Vander ties off the rope, secures it, and then begins to climb down using only his tail and legs. His arms need to be free to ready his sling  in case something attacks the doctor.

OOC-using assurance in atheltics to get a result of 23 without rolling to scale down the rope. I can climb without my arms due to my tail. Stealthing down just in case the doc is ambushed.

Re: Into the wastes

Vander you climb down into the hole, releasing the rope you find your self on the pile of very loose fine sand movement toward it's peak is hampered and your footing is constantly shifting with the sands. The doc is strapping his leg and now that you are down with him you also hear the clicking coming from the building  to the west of you, its roof supported by giant pillars.

Both of you see 2 large dark shadowy blobs hugging the pillars at the intersection where the pillars join with the roof. As you focus your dark-vision on these in-descript shapes you begin to get a clearer picture of what is there. You see long spindly legs begin to slowly unfurl revealing the source of the clicking. On each creature, two giant mandibles tipped with wicked fangs seem are twitching in anticipation. A black ichor beginning to drip from there ends, they click against the hard chitinous shell of these beasts. Eight shiny black eyes are focused upon the two intruders into their domain.

For Vander and Doc it is like seeing your nightmares slowly come to life as two spiders, their size spanning a full 10' across, can be seen now that they have made themselves known.

OOC: Could you all please roll initiative: (perception)

There is a drop of 40' from the hole to the sand below due to how fine and lose the sand is you receive only half damage from the fall (10 dmg) and land prone

Dr Rajeed: sorry doc I will fix your damage up I calculated it wrong it was only 10 not 12. We no longer roll for falling damage... but you are still prone. Also you are les than a minute into treating your wounds when you notice the spiders.

To shimmy down the rope is one action athletics check DC 10.

I have updated map. Map 0

These spiders failed there stealth vs your perception they are currently at the top of the pillars which rise up to support the domed roof so for accuracy they would rise to a height of 60' from the sand stone floor where they join with the dome. The dome rises a further 40' to the hole Doc fell through and Vander climbed through.

The stair leading up to the pillars and the platform rise 10', the pillars are 50' tall and 5' wide.

Squares on the map are 5'x5'

Difficult terrain marked with triangle
All movement toward W9 requires a climb check and is reduced to 5' per successful check
All movement away from W9 is at half speed no check required

Rope is hanging down in W9

Sakinah hearing his comrades cries for help moves to the rope and shimies down it almost landing on vander once at the bottom he draws his wishblade Readying himself to fight.

OOC: A1 move to rope
A2 shimmy down rope to V9
A3 draw weapon

The sling bullet from Vander hits it's mark and the spider flinches as the bullet hits it cracking it's hard carapace causing it to ooze a greyish blood.  This prompts the spiders into lightning fast action. The first spider descends the pillar and scuttles at an amazing speed directly at Sakinah, the sand doesn't seem to hamper it's climbing at all. It's mandibles clicking as it rears and strikes with it's fangs. But the quick fighter raises his sword deflecting the fangs that drip with a black ichor. The second spider Scuttles down the pillar and like it's counterpart moves toward the fighter, as it closes it strikes out with it's leg. The beasts hard leg like a giant staff cracks against Sakinah's knee sending the warrior to the ground with the power of it's blow.

OOC:
Spider 1: A1 move down pillar
A2 move to Sakinah
A3 attack with fangs = 10:43, Today: Dungeon Master, for the NPC Spider 1, rolled 19,13 using 1d20+17,2d8+8.  Attack and damage + poison.
Spider 2: A1 move down pillar
A2 move to Sakinah

10:49, Today: Dungeon Master, for the NPC Spider 2, rolled 36,11 using 1d20+17,1d12+8.  Leg attack and damage + knockdown. Double Damage Crit hit 22 damage total

Quickly taking stock of the situation, Aeris knows she has to act fast. Her people are no strangers to giant spiders—and their horrific, venomous appetites. She jumps forward into the hole, somersaulting in midair and grabbing the rope on the way down, swinging her feet onto it and nimbly sliding down. Reaching the sand and barely disturbing a grain with her light footfalls, Aeris sprints across the sands, circling around to the spider bearing down on Sanika. She jumped the last few feet, bringing her heel down on the spider and spinning into a follow-up kick, trying to fend it away.

Re: Into the wastes

The spiders have their leg swept out from under them by Vanders tail causing them both to fall to the ground hard. Sakinak follows this up with a vicious blow to one of the hairy beasts (spider1).

The spiders regain their feet and lash out at Sakinah and vander. The first spider very shaky on its legs now rears up on it's back 4 leg flicking the hairs off it's front legs. The hairs like darts rain down upon the 3 adventures before it (vander, Sakinah and Rajeed). While the second spider lashes out at Vander with a leg. It misses the spry goblin, but it follows this up with it's lethal fangs that drip a poisonous ichor. Vander is unable to avoid the piercing fangs as they sink deeply into his chest pumping him full of it's deadly poison.

A third spider appears at the hole in the roof it has been sneaking along the cieling unseen. It's legs snaking through to strike at berethor driving him to the ground battering him to the sand. As Luck would have it it is unable to fit through the hole in the roof.

he raises his hand and a shaft of healing light bursts forth enveloping Vander in it's healing glow. Even as the spider retracts it's wicked fangs the wound begins to nit and close itself until there is not even a mark left behind on his friends skin only the rent and blood on his cloths remains.

Re: Into the wastes

Vander completely dodges the dart like hairs and eating goblin food for the first few years of his life was it seems more dangerous than the giant spiders poison for with the healing from the Doc he seems completely unaffected.

Top side Lupin calls upon some green arcane power calling it forth, it strikes the spider blocking the hole. The spider begins to twitch and shake before falling upon your comrades below.

Sakinah only has a moment to look up before she realizes a giant spider is twitching and screeching falls on her.

OOC: Sakinah please roll a basic reflex check DC 15 and I am still waiting on your saving basic reflex saving throw vs DC25

Spider 3 is now paralyzed for 4 rounds critical fail for it, but it falls when paralyzed landing on Sakinah.

Re: Into the wastes

Aeris sighs at the spiders' tenacity. She does not wish to harm a living creature, but she cannot allow herself or others to come to harm. "Flee, creatures!" she cries. "Flee and feed another day!" Knowing full well that they cannot hear her words, the Elf resigns herself to battle in the name of defending her allies. She waves into the spider's thrashing legs, which fend off her overhead chop, but she nimbly steps back and side-kicks the spider in the joints where some of its legs meet its body.

Trying to take hold of those thrashing limbs, Aeris has a mind to get the creature away from her beleaguered allies, but struggles to find a purchase with the slippery arachnid.

OOC
Aeris will engage in the following actions.

• Flurry of Blows ♦: 2 Strikes against Spider 1. Stunning Fist means that if either Strike hits, the spider must Fort save vs. my class DC 23 or be stunned 1 (stunned 3 on crit fail).
• Strike 1: Attack 16 • Damage 7

I'm not sure what to do at the moment, so I'll try to grapple Spider 1, aiming for a heave-ho next turn.

Aeris hears a crack from the solid hit to the leg, and the spider seems uninclined to place further weight on that leg luckily it has 7 more. Then she surprises the large beast moving between its legs to grab it's rear limbs at the joints to the thorax.

OOC: successful grapple on that second try.

Re: Into the wastes

Sakinah says, "This will end quickly for you beasts, I promise."
With that her arms suddenly became sheathed in earth, which quickly flowed to cover her wishblade, the earth covered blade begins to arc with electrical energy. She then took the blade in both her hands and brought it down upon spider 2 as hard as she could! Opening a huge rent in it's carapace, blood flowing like a river from the rent.

The paralyzed spider twitches a  little but remains on the ground with it's legs in the air.
Spider 2 angered by it's food becoming more difficult than it is used too, focuses on Vander trying again to poison the goblin with it's fangs. This time it's fangs sink deep into his leg. Then tearing its fangs free it rears up on it's hind legs flicking its forelegs at the group flinging dart like hairs at Vander, Sakinah, and Rajeed.

Re: Into the wastes

Your group manages to rest up over the next half hour the doc is able to stich and bind the wounds of the injured. Those not injured search around the plaza and soon find a horse bound in web, you also find of the other condemned also dead. A third and much older drained corps is also wrapped in webbing bound to one of the pillars. You find mundane equipment, a long sword a chain shirt and a short bow with arrows. The equipment on the husks of the corpse is rotted and old but a scroll case is salvageable. Inside of which you find a map written on the skin of some beast that has stood the passage of time well. At the east side of the sunken plaza beyond the spiders webs are a set of stone doors unopened for years.

OOC: Dr Rajeed is able to fix 26 hp evey 10 min of 4 group membes at a time so in 20 minutes everyone is back to full health for those not injured you will be able to explore a little.

Vander finds no traps on the door but it's weight and age cause it to open slowly with much falling dust. opening the door reveals a dark 20' x 20' square entry room. The floor slants leaning to the south. Before you, 2 golden doors, bright and shining from the magical light on doc's head. The doors have no handles or fixtures but have strange writings carved into the. To the north and the south 5' wide passages lead off into darkness.

Re: Into the wastes

searching the forge you find an ingot of a metal you haven't seen before. Vander finds a bucket filled with a dark wood that is of a far higher quality than any of the other wood in this room. While Berethor is able to butcher the spiders for their thick leathery hides and hard chitinous carapaces. After 10 minutes Lupin identifies the runes on the the dagger as as that of a +1 striking weapon these could be transferred to one of your weapons given time. Also under the work bench you find a pair of worn leather gloves one of which has 3 cut gems inside. The gloves give off a magical aura, on further study they are identified as gloves of the forge. The last thing you find of note in this room is an old tablet upon which is etched a formula

OOC already the group has found components that would suffice to create some fine items. As I said at the beginning you will get the opportunity in this game to manufacture weapons and armors that befit your level.

After an appropriate interval, the knight straightens and smiles. "Sir Aeronon Blackgem, at your service."

Pleasantries dispensed with, he addresses the elven wizard, "'Strength in numbers', indeed. A more intelligent phrase was never uttered." His intentions clear, the mentally rejuvenated Aeronon prepares to continue the exploration with help from his new comrades.

"This one will require several days of preparation to worm through the door's magic.  The first time, at least.  As one has humbly suggested before, the door can be returned to when more fo the complex is explored.  Perhaps, after all, there may be a more traditional key available."  The elven wizard replied demurely, with just the slightest hint of annoyance at needing to repeat himself.  He motioned over one shoulder, for the benefit of the newcomers.

"In that direction is what appears to be a serviceable area for crafting and enchantment, should the opportunity lend itself.  And that way," Lupine gestured vaguely with his staff, "remains undisturbed."

Moving past the doc you find not traps. When you reach the first passage you see a old door way the door missing and within is a camber similar to the work room though no forge here. Instead there is a Lab setup with old jars and beakers, their content long since dried into powder. Like the crafting room this room could be used again with some effort.  Further down the corridor the second Sothern passage has a still serviceable door blocking the way. Checking the door you find no traps.

Doc removing some sand that blocks the door you are soon able to open it revealing a 20' wide x 30' long slanting room. The room ends to the west with ash and sand filling the entire chamber. The walls are lined with racks of bone cases. Each of the cases are pilled high with ancient scrolls. A statue lies broken on the floor to the east. A carved tablet it once held, etched with ancient writings, lies upon the floor beside it. The upper and lower proportions of the statue are shattered beyond recognition.

The scrolls are so old, that even breathing near them causes a cascade of papyrus dust to rain down on you. It is at the base of one of these piles of papyrus dust you notice something  green poking out. Cleaning it off you discover a copper scroll green and brittle with age. It is engraved with ancient runes and encases some sort of copper pipe embossed with yet more writing. With some careful work in a lab the green oxidation could be removed and the copper unfurled without damaging the scroll or embossed roll plate.

"We shouldn't touch anything else, until one can be sure to avoid such devastation as before.  One an only speculate at what secrets remain in this room, and what has already been lost."  Lupine still sounded shaken as he spoke, and was careful not to touch anything as he came deeper into the room.  The clay tablets seemed safe enough to approach; perhaps they would shed some light as to the sort of information in this library.  If it was a hall of tax law, he would be less broken up about his inability to restore the lost scrolls.

In reply to Sakinah Dakar (msg # 252):

From the intricate runes you can glean that some sort of imprisoning ritual has been placed upon the onyx bottle, but that is all you can understand of these complex runes. The bottle upon the altar radiates magic, it's aura when read shows that evocation magic has been used here.
When Lupine studies the bottle he is sure the imprisonment ritual has been used but this is truly beyond the extent of his understanding for only legendary wizards or sorcerers could pull off such mighty magics and this would also explain the power of the barriers you all faced to get to the altar.

I am sure one of you will cast detect magic and read aura so just posting the info.

I am sure that lupine will study the runes too so I took the liberty of making a roll for him. I hope he doesn't mind....

Imprisoned in a bottle you say?! By golly this could be an Aladdin's lamp!

There is a tale from my homeland. A young thief named Aladdin finds a magical lamp, in which a mighty Jinni is imprisoned. When freed the Jinni grants wishes to the rogue for freeing it from prison. The thief becomes a prince, and marries the sultans daughter in the end. But not before thwarting the evil court wizard trying to take over the sultans empire. I always thought it was a fantastical children's tale.

BUT.. If this IS a similar lamp, just imagine the possibilities of being granted wishes! By golly my friends we have struck true magical treasure!

The doc becomes over excited at the prospect of the magical find.

Lupine went stoney faced.  "Do.  Not.  Touch.  It."  He cautioned, carefully enunciating each word as though trying out a new language in a life or death situation.  "Do.  Not.  Touch.  Whatever is in there is powerful, as are the magics in place to hold it.  'The greatest of all e-.'  Who would dare chance the word to be any other than 'evil?'  If it was one that could be readily harnessed, why go through this much trouble to keep the bottle hidden?"

Re: Into the wastes

Aeronon listens to his comrades' comments, his brow knit in thought. Lupine's warning is particularly chilling but to the knight that is all the more reason that they cannot leave it unguarded. He believes Doc is on the right track with his 'warning' suggestion but he fears that it would not be adequate.

As his friends finish their evaluation, he nods in general agreement with their comments. "Joanna is, of course, correct. That should not be opened until when know what it contains and why."

He frowns to himself, thinking out loud. "Whatever is locked within the bottle required powerful magic to put it there and we have just removed the barriers that kept it secure. Since we lack the knowledge to reinstate the magic traps, I believe we need to take the bottle with us even if we choose not to open it. Maybe we will be able to determine what is trapped there with additional investigation."

He pauses for a moment, then adds. "If it is safe to move, or even touch, that is."

Re: Into the wastes

Freeing the bottle from the hand that claps it is possible by breaking the rune covered hand. This would destroy the runes on the hand, but the bottle and runes on the bottle should remain mostly intact...
The effect of this on the imprisoning magics is unknown to all of you.

Of note the bottle it's self is quite large and would constitute 2 bulk. Think of a 4'  high hooka with a 2' wide base. It is bulky and unwieldly.

Re: Into the wastes

In reply to Dr Rajeed (msg # 266):

Searching through the lab you find that it can be made functional many organic components are ruined, but with what you scavenged from the spiders and adding water to those mineral components you find that have become crystalized or reduced to powder over time you find you have enough to treat the copper scroll that the corrosion is safely removed and it can be taken to the crafting room to carefully open (DC 15 craft check to be made in the lab then DC 20 craft check to be done to unfurl). Also there is enough components to make a batch of anti toxin, and an expert healers kit given time.

As for the crafting room given time you have what you need to transfer the +1 striking rune onto a weapon just the time needs to be spent to do so also you have a formula for giving finely crafted armour a +1 resilient enchantment but you lack all the components. The ruby stopper from the bottle would complete what you need to create the 2 sets of armor. With all the other components you have gathered could make a breastplate, hide armor, or leather armor, or spider silk cloths. (All of this requires crafting time)

So basically a with time spent here, you could furbish your group with some very useful equipment but this would mean you will start to run out of water, at some point also you have the Map that was found and yet unexamined.

You all wander off within the ruins to explore your own concerns or perhaps you continue to study the strange bottle. But soon enough each and everyone of you feel sleep calling and you roll out your bed rolls and rest. When you awake you feel refreshed and ready for a new day. When you look up to the hole you entered through you see it is still daylight. Some of you tend the camels and horses picketed above. Some of you pray or read a large tomb of magical texts, and some of you just make breakfast. But still the problem of the strange bottle needs to be solved and you are all sure this desert has more secrets to offer up, you have barely scratched the surface.

Upon completion of the spell a star appears above the bottle, the star is a dark empty black colour with silver linings and just hovers doing nothing. As it is not red which would indicate that woe would come of this action or silvery blue that would indicate your proposed action would be good, or even flashing between red and blue showing both Weal and Woe will come of this action. This instead indicates nothing to you doc.

Re: Into the wastes

"Maybe the poem means that we have to cast multiple types of protections on us?" Aeron offers. He pauses for a moment before continuing. "Is it possible that if only one of us stays to open it and that person is protected from the same types of damage produced from the walls we removed to reach it, then we could survive? We know the first one was cold and the poem mentions being 'fried like rice' which should be fire damage but what would the yellow wall represent? Acid? Sound?..." He asks to himself as much as to his comrades. "Maybe Doc could repeat the spell, as he suggested, to gather some additional information about the wards we need to survive? Or possibly find out what has been trapped within the bottle?" He said hopefully.

"I believe that we need to either take the bottle or open it rather than leave it alone to be found later by possibly less experienced travelers. Since moving it is clearly not practical that leaves us with opening it." He looks around the group for a moment, gathering his thoughts. "If, any only if, we agree as a group to open it then I volunteer to stay behind if there is not another, better suited, choice. Once we have good guess regarding the poem's meaning, we can apply wards to whomever is chosen to open the bottle."

"Of course, if we survive then we have to deal with whatever 'evil' is set free. If only we could determine what that evil is..." Aeronon says, losing hope with each thought. However, he knows the risks and still believes them worth taking in order to avoid leaving such a seemingly dangerous artifact laying around to be discovered.

"You now have my thoughts, for what they are worth." He smiles wanly. "Needless to say, I will follow the will of the group."

We already know that moving the bottle isn't practical and, other than burying it, neither is protecting it from detection. Therefore, if we can't defeat the contained evil in the first place then we have no reason to linger."

Re: Into the wastes

In reply to Dr Rajeed (msg # 292):

Once again the dwarven clerics body shakes, his eyes rolling back into his head. That same feminine voice conveys an omen disconcerting as it is from one who’s voice usually is a baritone base,

Doc:
“With thy words or cold and ice
The evil will surely take to flight
But lock it down trapped like mice
With a volcano’s fury it will fight“

Once again with the short poem complete the dwarf drops to the floor his words giving hope and an ominous warning.

“Well by golly rhymes and riddles. Oh mistress could you not be more clear?!

Shouts the Doc to the roof. The short doctor pulls himself up to his impressive 4’4”  saying,

“Well I have one more question to ask then”

Once again he chants for 10 minutes,

He finally finishes chanting raises his hands and says,

“MISTRESS TELL ME TRUE CAN THE ENTITY TRAPPED IN THIS BOTTLE GRANT WISHES?!”

OOC Doc casts his last Augury spell he prayed for that day he has used most of his spells now and I would recommend he rest before we decide what to do with the bottle.

The Doc let’s out a mighty,

“HARUMFF”

At this looking tired after all his chanting he turns to the others saying,

“So this is what we know the bottle uses good magic for its imprisonment. If we do unstopper it, we will release an evil in exchange we will be able to give 2 of our group some sort of protection from fried rice. If we talk to the evil entity it will run away if we attack it with cold and ice it will run away if we trap it it will fight. So that states the obvious what do you all think? I am for loading up on ice spells and trapping it then duking it out by golly. Not sure how we would trap it though. I can make sure it can’t teleport out for a time and we can close the doors but if flight means it will fly then we need to ensure a way to get at it on the ceiling I can help with that too I guess. What are your thoughts??

He looks at the group whom have been very quiet for a long time expectantly..

"I agree. We must destroy it forthwith." Aeronon says simply. He clinches his jaw in thought, a habit he picked up in school during the many times they disallowed speech. "Now all that remains is a workable strategy." Heh, Easier said than done. he admits mutely.

While he is willing to confront the evil alone, he is nonetheless greatly relieved that his companions and he have all come to the same conclusion. He looks around the group, giving thanks for their fortuitous meeting. "Any ideas?"

I have thus far from what people have said:

Doc: making extended healers tools (4days)
Vander: Making net trap (4 days to make web/rope net and trap)
Lupine: I am assuming will transfer the +1 striking rune to a weapon. (4 days I think I haven't looked into the transfer process much). The other formulas he has cannot be used without the ruby stopper as a component. Who's weapon will be enchanted?

What are the rest of you doing over this time to prepare??

Sir Aeronon, kneels in prayer and empties himself in meditative preparation. After several hours seeking guidance from Iomedae in silence, he lays his wish blade across his lap and sets his mind to spell preparation. You and the more devious of the group took the food and water supplies of the next 2. But then it was your turn. You knew it was coming there was no trusting the others the other 2 you left near the spiders were far more trusting and trustworthy which is why the others got rid of them first. Maybe if you brought their supplies back to them they would forgive you for abandoning them. So in the night you took their supplies while the rest slept and headed back the way you came it takes a couple of days but you are soon back to the site of the spider ambush and at the statue you see tents erected and 5 beasts resting beneath them]

He approached cautiously, knowing that he was not likely to be well received. He dismounts and walks his laden camel down the last dune before the tents. It had be been a hard trip so he didn't need to embellish any of the laboured look as he approached to make sure that he looked harmless.
He held up a hand to the camels to calm them making soft shushing sounds to put them at ease.
"I see you gimeli. I come in peace and bring gifts unto you. Quiet now, how many are with you? Hmm?" He asked while patting the closest one with his pasty, elderly hand. He sucked on his gums as he put his head against the camel's chest. "Hrmm, interesting. And the ones we left behind? They still here, hmm?" He pulled out a fruit and let the beast eat it from his hand. "Guess we best get this over with then eh?" He declared in his papery voice. He then undid a saddle bag and hoisted it over a shoulder, bending him even further at the waist. Reaching into his cloak he pulled out a staff that could clearly never have fit in an interior pocket, he leaned on it heavily as he trudged under his burden toward the sandy entrance of the cavern.

A rope drops down from above and seconds later an elderly Fetchling slides down with surprising grace. As he drops to the sand he sketches a small bow to each of you. "Scath Oiche, at your service." His eyes glow brightly or possibly just reflect the nearby torches. With a sweep of his hand his hood is removed and his snow white hair falls limply around his shoulders. "Ah, it is good to be back out of the sun. Much cooler down here, eh?" He gives Lupine a critical sizing up while squinting out of only one eye. Appearing to have come to a conclusion he responds to the question with a chuff. "How did I find this place? How did you find this place? We were here first! Hmmph! I came with them." He flicks an elbow at Aeronon while giving an eye to the snake coiled around Lupine's staff. "Si jamais tu veux ta liberté, viens me parler."  He says softly to the creature. He then turns his back and approaches Aeronon. "We have returned with your supplies and more. The thieves have repaid two fold as is appropriate. The dwarf heads straight up to the altar. He is too short to just pull the stopper and would need to climb onto the altar to do so. The room is lit by magically lit torches. The mood is oppressive with anticipation.
