Money Matters

Approximate Exchange Rates for August 1972

You may be able to get better prices away from the official places, but be warned of the risks.

1 US Dollar equals approximately:
  • £0.41 or 41 British new pence (the UK went to decimal in 1971)
  • 5 French Francs
  • 50 Belgian Francs/50 Luxembourg Francs. Both currencies are at parity by bilateral agreement and officially both lots of notes/coins are accepted in both countries. In practice, many Belgian shops will not take Luxembourger money.
  • 3.2 Deutsche Marks (West Germany)
  • 23 Austrian Schillings
  • 16.75 Yugoslav dinar
  • 30 Greek drachma
  • 14.2 Turkish lira
  • 75.75 Iranian rial
  • 8.7 Pakistani rupee
  • 7.6 Indian rupee
