Challenge tests to crack ship systems

This thread is going to outline the challenge tests to interrogate the prisoners and then crack open the vessels CPU and Navigation cores.

It can be considered an out of character thread for discussion as to who will make the rolls for which test, and where the rolls can be posted.

The reason for these tests is that I don't want to just give players information that can affect the course of the game for free.

Aside from the interrogation, multiple characters can roll for the same test, but a character cannot roll for multiple tests.
  • For example, Kojo has the Cryptography, Technology, and Security focuses. As he is the only character with the Cryptography focus, I only listed him under Cryptography below as he cannot also roll for the Technology, and Security tests.
  • This means Kattalin, and Sancho need to decide what test they are going to make.
  • We also need to figure out what test Asha is going to focus on (I can temporarily assign Asha to a player, PM me if interested).
  • I did make rolls to determine the origin, social class, and profession of the three unnamed NPCs, and it doesn't look like they will be of much help.
  • Tattoo Face and Shaved Head are not going to be much help either.

Using Fortune
As this is being done in an interlude, I don’t think fortune should be used because there is no risk to spending it. But I suppose if you REALLY wanted to use fortune, you can but would not have it available once the player cast gets to the next encounter (whatever that will be) where fortune can be used. This way the risk/reward factor for using fortune is maintained within the game.

Research

I made a research roll as Shinsato Hirotsugu (only character with this focus) to gain information about the ships systems.

Research ships systems
07:25, Today: Darkside Trooper, on behalf of Shinsato Hirotsugu, rolled 18 using 3d6+4 with the AGE System (({3}, 5, 6)).
PASS: Success threshold lowered by 3

As this was a pass with a dram die of 3, I have decided that the success threshold has been lowered by three for cracking the respective CPU and NAV cores of the two stealth ships.

Prisoner Interrogation (optional)

As mentioned in the game, the two prisoners, one from Apophis, and one from Ba'al can be questioned in the hopes of making it easier to crack the respective CPU and NAV cores of the two stealth ships.

Each prisoner can be interrogated once. The same character can interrogate both of them, or they can be interrogated by different characters. Interrogation can be RP'd in the Medical Bay thread, but it is not necessary.

I have listed below which characters are best suited for this task.

Drugging of Prisoners
Intelligence (Pharmacology)
  • Dr. Kaos (NPC)

Interrogation/Questioning of Prisoners
Communication (Persuasion)
  • Alis
  • Shasa (being NPC’d)
  • Kojo (being NPC’d)

Prisoner Interrogation Test (optional) Can be done for each prisoner once.
  • Intelligence (Pharmacology) TN 12 (limit 1 attempt, drama die lowers TN of persuasion test)
  • Communication (Persuasion) TN 15 (limit 1 attempt)
Persuasion test success results:
  • One armed prisoner from Ba’al: Drama die result of persuasion test lowers success threshold of both tests for Ba’al, and the Technology tests TN for both ships.
  • Prisoner from Apophis: Drama die result of persuasion test lowers success threshold of both tests for Apophis, and the Security tests TN for both ships.

Results
One armed prisoner from Ba’al:
10:19, Today: Darkside Trooper, on behalf of Dr. Abang Kaos, rolled 14 using 3d6+4 with the AGE System with rolls of {4}, 1, 5.  Intelligence (Pharmacology) 1 armed prisoner.
FAIL: Drugs didn't work

10:14, Today: Alis Syn rolled 17 using 3d6+7 with the AGE System with rolls of {1}, 4, 5.  Persuasion .
TN 15 vs 17 = PASS:

-1 to Success threshold for Ba'al.
-1 to all Security tests.

Prisoner from Apophis:
10:19, Today: Darkside Trooper, on behalf of Dr. Abang Kaos, rolled 11 using 3d6+4 with the AGE System with rolls of {1}, 4, 2.  Intelligence (Pharmacology) whole prisoner.
FAIL: Drugs didn't work

10:14, Today: Alis Syn rolled 19 using 3d6+7 (3 stunt points) with the AGE System with rolls of {3}, 6, 3.  Per.
(3SP) Will use Lucky Break (Detailed)
TN 15 vs 19 = PASS

-3 to Success threshold for Apophis.
-3 to all Technology tests.
-3 to all Cryptography tests (lucky break)

Cracking the CPU & Nav cores

The respective CPU and NAV core of each stealth ship are locked down. It will take a team effort to open them up to gain information.

I have listed below which characters are best suited for this task.

Deciphering CPU & Nav core coding
Intelligence (Cryptography)
  • Kojo (being NPC’d)

Defeat Security protocols
Intelligence (Security)
  • Kattalin
  • Asha (NPC)
  • Sancho

Hack system to gain access
Intelligence (Technology)
  • Kattalin
  • Asha (NPC)
  • Sancho

Stealth Ship Computer Core Challenge Test Needs to be done for both Apophis and Ba’al.
  • SUCCESS THRESHOLD: 15 (now 12)
  • Intelligence (Security) TN 12 (now 11)
  • Intelligence (Cryptography) TN 15 (now 12)
  • Intelligence (Technology) TN 15 (now 12)
Consequences
  • Minor Consequence: TN of subsequent tests goes up to by 2
  • Moderate Consequence: Vessel’s next set of orders is purged form the CPU core
  • Major Consequence: CPU core purges itself, all data is lost
Success Player characters unlock CPU core, and know the following:
  1. Vessels previous mission(s)
  2. Vessel current mission (Kinda clear it had to do something with killing Eros, but this will be the specifics)
  3. Vessel’s next set of orders/mission

Apophis Attempts/Results:
Current success threshold: -1 CPU core has been accessed

1st attempt: PASS
18:26, Today: Darkside Trooper, on behalf of Asha Blackburn, rolled 15 using 3d6+7 with the AGE System with rolls of {1}, 5, 2.  Intelligence (Security) TN 11.

18:24, Today: Darkside Trooper, on behalf of Kojo Botha, rolled 17 using 3d6+6 with the AGE System with rolls of {3}, 6, 2.  Intelligence (Cryptography) TN 12.

15:20, Today: Secret Roll: Kattalin Zubiri rolled 26 using 3d6+9 (6 stunt points) with the AGE System with rolls of {6}, 6, 5.  Intelligence (technology)+hacking.
Stunt points: Pay Dirt 6

Ba'al Attempts/Results:
Current success threshold: 11

Stealth Ship Navigation Core Challenge Test Needs to be done for both Apophis and Ba’al.
  • SUCCESS THRESHOLD: 14 (now 11)
  • Intelligence (Security) TN 12 (now 11)
  • Intelligence (Technology) TN 15 (now 12)
  • Intelligence (Cryptography) TN 15 (now 12)
Consequences
  • Minor Consequence: TN of subsequent tests goes up to by 2
  • Moderate Consequence: Location of [REDACTED] bases in the belt is purged from the nav core
  • Major Consequence: Nav core purges itself, all data is lost.
Success Player characters unlock navigation core, and know the following:
  1. Where the vessel originated, and its course through the sol system up to this point.
  2. Location of [REDACTED] bases in the Belt.

Apophis Attempts/Results:
Current success threshold: 8

Ba'al Attempts/Results:
Current success threshold: 10

Cracking the CPU & Nav cores

I have updated the TN's and thresholds based on the interrogation rolls.

Now we need to decide which of the 4 tests are going to be attempted first, and I guess the overall order they are to be done.
  • Apophis CPU Core
  • Apophis NAV Core
  • Ba'al CPU Core
  • Ba'al NAV Core

Cracking the CPU & Nav cores

You hinted at some kind of bottle neck, or limit to how many rolls any one character can make, but not what that limit is.  Can I make 1 roll for each of the 4 computers we are trying to unlock, or just the 2 on the ship I am on?

Cracking the CPU & Nav cores

In reply to Kattalin Zubiri (msg # 6):

You can work on one test per each of the four CPU’s.

I would hold off on rolling on all four at once. To keep things simple we should focus on one CPU first. Stunts can have affects on future tests. They could potentially roll back a consequence too.

Right now I think Kattalin needs to decide which CPU to crack first of the four and if she’s going to focus on tech or security. Asha can focus on the other while Sancho can make a roll (for tech or security) to help increase the success threshold. I’ll make the roll for Kojo but because he’s not a full NPC I will not spend fortune.

Once we figure out who is rolling for each test. The characters could roll all three attempts (just note as such in the die roller). From there Fortune can be spent as needed.

Once one CPU is cracked open the next one can be worked on.

….and yes this would be easier on table top or a chat based game.

Cracking the CPU & Nav cores

Either roll is fairly simple for Kattalin, whoever else is going to roll, or if they can work to help each other both of them, should make whichever test is easiest for them and I will do the other one.

Ok go ahead and decide what you’re going to roll and post results here. I’ll roll for the NPCs if a helper roll is needed Sancho can then roll.

Kattalin Zubiri rolled 26 using 3d6+9 (6 stunt points) with the AGE System with rolls of {6}, 6, 5.  Intelligence (technology)+hacking. Apophis CPU Core
One additional piece of information.
Stunt points:
WHEN A PLAN COMES TOGETHER used to help Kojo +3
HIGH TECH HUSTLE, this will negate a consequence if one occurs.

1st attempt Rolls to crack Ba'al CPU core
21:00, Today: Darkside Trooper, on behalf of Kojo Botha, rolled 18 using 3d6+6 with the AGE System with rolls of {2}, 4, 6.  Intelligence (Cryptography) TN 10 Ba'al CPU Core.
PASS

20:59, Today: Darkside Trooper, on behalf of Asha Blackburn, rolled 19 using 3d6+7 with the AGE System with rolls of {2}, 6, 4.  Intelligence (Security) TN 11 Ba'al CPU Core.
PASS

One nine success point total = 1 failure, but this has been negated by Kattalin's HIGH TECH HUSTLE stunt.

2nd attempt Rolls to crack Ba'al CPU core

21:04, Today: Darkside Trooper, on behalf of Kojo Botha, rolled 18 using 3d6+6 with the AGE System with rolls of {5}, 3, 4.  Intelligence (Cryptography) TN 10 Ba'al CPU Core.
PASS

21:05, Today: Darkside Trooper, on behalf of Asha Blackburn, rolled 16 using 3d6+7 (1 stunt point) with the AGE System with rolls of {1}, 4, 4.  Intelligence (Security) TN 11 Ba'al CPU Core.
PASS

OOC: Need another roll from Kattalin Zubiri. Roll just needs to pass.

Kattalin's roll will pretty much be an auto success 3d6+9 = a 12 at minimum, and only needs to have a result of 1 on the drama die. A roll can still be made to see if stunt points are generated.

Re: Cracking the CPU & Nav cores

Just about as close to failure as possible, not sure there is any auto failure in this thing.

19:14, Today: Kattalin Zubiri rolled 13 using 3d6+9 (1 stunt point) with the AGE System (({1}, 2, 1)).
Stunt Point This time there really is nothing else to spend it on so just 1 point in Pay Dirt to represent something trivial but useful from the data cores.
