Cassander, the stairs ended in a small landing with a single door.  That is as far as the passage goes.

The walls near the door that's still closed. Cass is trying to establish if it's safe to illuminate the landing so that others can see there.

Right.  He does not feel any inscribing on those walls, only the seams between the blocks of stone.
