I think you all know what this is for!

But I guess I will start it off with a little about me, since I asked about each of you.

I started rp-ing when I got my first home computer 25 years ago. It was chat rooms and freeform and I had no clue what I was doing was roleplaying. About two years after I had a group of friends in high school who started me on White Wolf system: Vampire, Werewolf/Changing Breeds, Mage, and Changeling were what we played often. Same group also did DnD 3rd off and on but I never had the ambition to learn all the rules, numbers, dice, and maths. Usually I would just let someone make my character sheet for me.

Met my husband through that group and eventually, we moved to another city, having to find new groups to play with (and some old ones who moved to the same city, luckily enough!) We've had fits and starts due to life: two children, work, mental health, etc but we always drift back. I have tried ADnD, 5th ed, Pathfinder (a LOT of this one,) Cyberpunk, Exalted, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Villians and Vigilantes, Warhammer, everything White Wolf, and probably a few I have forgotten. I'll play anything but I truly enjoy games with less rolling, less railroading, and more character interaction. When I run games, I usually have broad sandbox settings, an end goal with multiple ways to achieve it, and reward characters, roleplaying, and creativity. It is much more entertaining for me to watch you guys squirm and come up with a plan that I can fit into the story than it is to sit around and wait for you to stumble on a pre-made track. But that doesn't mean I leave you stumped forever either...

If I were a flavor, I would be avocado.

Hello everyone, I will be playing Milo: An ex-mage with a dark past and a kill list!

Though he is not quick to trust, Milo will happily work with anyone: So don't worry about having to deal with a lone wolf character :D

One thing Milo hates more than anything in the world is traitors, and so you can rely on him in a jam, even if he isn't ready to rely on you...

I'm thinking hard and developing a (hopefully) intriguing and layered personality for you all to experience once we get in the game :)

By the way, GM are we waiting on players to start? When we do start, are you going to set the scene or should we just jump in as soon as a thread opens up?

Greetings all,
I'll be playing  Schnnarrp (when the Oracle graces me with a name change).

Schnnarrp is a three foot tall stone monkey.   To the eyes of most biological races, he appears as an animated statue of a monkey ... but he is of a race of stone elemental monkeys from ... well, another dimension from this one, because Schnarrrrp doesn't recognise this place.

Cheeky. I like it.

I'll admit, Oracle and I know each other from the tabletop side of the paradigm among other things. I can't really pinpoint when roleplaying started for me. My parents encouraged it before we had a computer. Started with the old board game Hero's Quest that they used to play with my uncle that I took over to play with my siblings. D&D 3rd edition base books when it was shiny and new was a group Christmas present for us. My first play-by-post setting a couple years later was D&D 2nd edition custom world that has long gone to the wind, but I never really lost the love of it. Oracle actually introduced me to White Wolf and I've been hooked ever since.

We're in MST in the great white north too. She's a full time mom, so be patient if she takes a while to get around to us. Frankly, once she points us at each other we can spend time interacting and give her time to recruit more folks to the game.

Ah, so that's why the GM goes by CrochetMamma!

No need to worry about me pestering overmuch, tbh I've spent 98% of my Patience Points in waiting around for PbP to refresh ha ha

I think it's a great GM strategy to start us off before tossing the proverbial rope to us, especially since we're predicting a GM with a tight schedule !

Recruiting for this game should be pretty easy, I think. The first game I ever ran on here (I was a truly worthless GM so please don't unearth my shame lmao) had a very similar premise, and it got hits fast. I didn't renew it's ads, but I assume if you do, you'll keep getting RTJs :)

Milo still doesn't know he's not in Arzengrande anymore, so he's abruptly adopted a fake identity out of habit.

If it wasn't clear, he's mimicking a jolly traveler of some kind; like a tavern-dwelling bard or maybe a playful merchant.

You got a slice of his real personality between when he dropped the reverence act and before he put back up this mask. That's not to say he's generally that rude, he was actually just covering up his embarrassment by being cold.

I'm offering this information to avoid any confusion on why a character clearly named 'Milo' introduced himself as Hartebraine

Re: Off Topic

I have decided that, just like in our real world, Metamorphic Rocks (Quartzite, Schist, Gneiss, etc) are created when the other two types of rock (Sedimentary and Igneous) are placed under great heat/pressure/chemical effect.

In the world that Schnnnnarp is from; that ‘evolution’ goes further, into what most of us geeks will recognise from the ‘King Monkey’ legends … in that, occasionally, as stone I’d being going through the Metamorphic process, ‘eggs’ can form.

From those eggs are born stone monkeys.

Stone Monkeys (or ‘Morphites’ as they refer to themselves) consume sustenance, just we humans do.
Just as humans eat both lower life forms and plants, Morphites consume lower mineral forms (Sedimentary and Igneous rocks), as well as plant matter.

There are various ‘races’ of Morphites, dependant on the type of Metamorphic rock that one grew from.
Sccchhnarp is a Marble based Morphite.    But there are Phyllite, Schist, etc Morphites also.

It is, of course, up to each player to decide what they might know of this …
But it is of academic intrigue to me.

Dwarves in Milo's world would be, like the Light Elves, based on the ones from Nidavellir in norse mythology.

So they would be literal titans who forge masterwork artifacts effortlessly, and reside in a boiling hellscape.

Judging how Milo is not covered in third degree burns and is not at all a blacksmith, he's never even met a dwarf, and thus cannot speak dwarvish.

Milo probably knows quite a few languages, because of his past occupation could have included infiltration, but he wouldn't know ones that are spoken by the superior races.

Also I'm sick of this personality already haha. I plan for Milo to drop it and reveal himself as soon as he realizes he's not being pursued anymore. He still hasn't cleared the other PCs of his (unfair) suspicions.

Loose ideas for you to work with: Rope tricks. Anything water-based. Animated rapier. Make daggers appear/disappear. Languages. Enhance gambling tactics (cheat the dice, insight into how successful your next hand will be, etc.) Disguise. Contol wind.

The one downside of this magic system is that it is SO open that you get choice paralysis. And having never presented an idea for it, I can understand you all wondering what the balance should be. I don't have an immediate answer for that but I am fully willing to work with you to establish it. So far everyone has been very reasonable with their selections. Favorite fruit? Prolly raspberries... can't often get good ones where I live though.

I like apricots too, but I don't think they sell them at our grocers?

Actually macintosh apples are also a good snack, and their quality is better but still not consistently decent.

I've not been eating enough fruit lately, might be part of why im feeling kinda down -_-

Yes, I thought that was the case.

My sentence was a bit vague in the wording:
quote:
Approaching the rescue group of Lyndis and Schnarrp, but keeping his distance from Sabriel

meant staying away from group 1 (lyndis, schnarrp and bob) and away from group 2 (sabriel), not staying away from sabriel in group 1 (lyndis, schnarrp, bob, and sabriel)

my apologies for any confusion.

I suppose it was redundant to say I was keeping a distance if i were approaching a separate group, but it would also mean he would approach them without crossing paths with your character, which is not necessarily implied by simply approaching the group.

again, not my best writing , but i still understood the situation ha ha

Congratz on graduating! :D

So.. I'm not sure how to handle the next bit. Lyndis can understand the dwarf, but she doesn't realize that others might not. So, she doesn't know that she needs to be translating. After all, everyone has been able to understand each other, so far.

If Lyndis speaks to the dwarf as she normally would when speaking with the PCs, will the others in the party understand her?

I'm just not sure how she's perceiving the language difference. I know that the GM has to write in a different language for those that can't understand, but is Lyndis definitely hearing "this is dwarven," rather than just understanding the dwarf?

Does that make sense?

Also, I didn't want to go further than just picking up the box in case anything happens or anyone else wants to smack it out of her hands or something. XD

Re: Off Topic

That question makes sense to me.

I was also wondering if Milo understands these people and his brain interprets their words as his first language. I assumed that was the case, otherwise he would have many more suspicions about what these foreign words being spoken are (and why he can understand them)

Since Milo was a pretty proficient wizard in his past, he definitely has a decently strong connection with languages, because in most settings wizards are often scholars. Also, he knows a lot of languages because he also served as a spy, so that's important for successfully infiltrating enemy lines and wrecking communications / gathering intelligence.

Re: Off Topic

The question makes sense and is valid. Lyndis, specifically, can understand what he's saying and recognize that it's a Dwarvish dialect. Dwarfish? Both are correct, what do I do?! He's not a fish so I'll stick with the v.

It was going to come out in-game eventually so I'll just spell it out for you as players, OUT OF GAME. You can decide amongst yourselves when you recognize this and how it comes up. I anticipate there being a conversation soon but it's entirely up to you.

You can all understand each other regardless of the language you think you're speaking, but only while using your most commonly used language (ie, the one you defaulted to on waking up.) In this case, if you speak a Dwarf dialect regularly, the other PCs will understand you when you speak but you will be the only one to understand the Dwarf. If your default is an Elvish dialect but you also know Dwarvish, PCs will understand you until you switch to Dwarvish.

The same goes for any additional language your characters might speak. I'm not super stickler on it so just casually mention when and if you think you might know a language. Or, if you prefer, add a note for additional languages to your character sheet and I'll work them in if I see fit.

All good? Any questions/clarifications?

Re: Off Topic

This is a great clarification, thank you! It's a rather cryptic truth, so it justifies Milo not immediately noticing it.

I still have a further question about that though: Does this mean if you were equally fluent in multiple languages, then you could speak two languages and be understood in both?

Or does it mean that only your foremost language (if you are fluent in multiple, then your first) is the only one other players can understand?

If I were to decide what languages Milo speaks, I'd have to do a lot of worldbuilding for a place I don't feel like doing worldbuilding for atm.

So, I'll just ballpark and say he knows a handful of human languages. Let's call his first language fantasy-english. He is also fluent in fantasy-french, fantasy-spanish and fantasy-german. He knows a small amount of fantasy-mandarin and fantasy-russian.

He can also read and write in Magic Script, which is not a spoken language.

He knows two encoded languages (has mastered neither). The first is a written one which is basically a complex cipher which references itself (meaning that depending on previous sentences, a following sentence may mean something else), and the latter is Blatherspeak which sounds similar to nonsense but is flexible enough to hold double meanings.

Thanks! That does help clear things up. I'm just going to go with Lyndis assuming that everyone else can understand him since they've all been able to understand each other up to this point. She'll only bother to translate if someone speaks up and asks what is being said.

I'm not going to edit my post to add anything else. I know it's short, but I'll leave it as is, for now. That'll give others a chance to react to the dwarf and whatnot.

Re: Off Topic

In reply to Milo (msg # 92):

Whatever language you first uttered on waking is the only one the other PCs think is "common" (Fantasy-English I guess.) It could be your instinctual language isn't even the one you are most fluent with or your native language. Maybe you have immersed yourself in a new culture recently.

If you woke speaking (Dwarvish) but your native language is (Elvish,) when you switch to a new language, everyone else who speaks (Elvish) will understand that as well. Switching was going to be the cue I gave that something isn't quite right. You would understand that you were speaking (Dwarvish) from the beginning and switched to (Elvish), the PC who understands (Elvish) will have understood what you have been saying but also recognize that you have just switched to Elvish.

Weren't you always speaking Elvish?

And as far as Milo's languages, I think that's a good enough indication without unnecessary world-building. You might even be surprised by the people you are able to understand (and the magic texts you are able to read.)

Didn't know where to fit this in my post, but can I clarify that the time of day is before dusk and there is only one sun in the sky? (It presumably rises from the east like on Earth?)

Milo would have noticed any discrepancies in the astrology while he was navigating.

If it is dark out, he would also be looking at the constellations to find his way north (Arzengrande has it's own version of a "North Star" though it's less straightforward than our Polaris happens to be)

It's mid morning, it's getting dark because of cloud cover. Sorry, I did think that might have been confusing and should have clarified.

One sun, right where it should be. Rises where it should, sets where it should. I will give better nighttime descriptions for you :)

Holy, that's a rough series of events. I hope your mum is okay, or she can get treatment for whatever ails her!

Like Sabriel said, I wouldn't worry too much about making yourself post if you don't have the time or headspace for it. But, if it helps you de-stress, then more power to ya!

Good to know. You see, I recently blew the whistle on some pretty horrible ethical practices being performed by [company name redacted] so I expect to get disappeared in a couple of days.

Edit: I just heard a knock at my door, they showed up quicker than I was expecting.

To answer a question without bogging up the IC thread:

When it comes to combat, Oracle will inform us when to make rolls for perception checks, initiative, and dictate the order of events.

Since we are coming up on the village, hearing normal village noises, and not been directed to make initiative rolls the general assumption should be that we are not going to immediately be in combat. How you behave once we get there could change that, but you play you. ;)

Re: Off Topic

Got it, good to know! Thank you!

I'm desperately waiting at my keyboard for someone to clear up this whole misunderstanding, but I'm also loving the possibility that Sabriel simply lets Milo keep thinking as he does and just loving the chaos.

Frankly, I'm not even 100% sure what is going on with Sabriel. Something is definitely off about her, at least how I'm interpreting it. I don't know if it was intentional, but if so, bravo! As a (mediocre, unpublished) writer, I know it's incredibly difficult to invoke a sense of unease this way! Again, it could just be me overanalyzing.

Re: Off Topic

Wonderful, wonderful! I must be playing her just right. I fully intend for her to be dreadfully fascinating and utterly complicated.

I am one of the bunch not actually from a strictly fantasy setting, so I have more scope of understanding of the world to use at my discretion. Whether that is to inform or torment? Well, I suppose it depends on Sabriel's mood at the time.

Re: Off Topic

A few things about Arzengrande.

It is an inherently magical world. Not 'magical' like a world with magic, but closer to how some places are magic incarnate. Like the Feywild from DND for example.

One of the consequences of that is that everyone lives longer than usual. Humans on Earth can hope to live anywhere from , say, 50 to 120 Earth years (based on conditions and luck) while on Arzengrande, humans can also live 50 to 120 Arzengrande years. Despite the fact that an arzengrande year is almost 1.4 times longer than an earth year.

So, I specified in my PM (and bio too) that Milo is 27.

12 years of childhood, 6 years of training arc, 3 years of demon warfare, four years of war crimes and then 2 years of living as a fugitive.

He appears to be around that many earth years in age (mid to late twenties), despite being biologically closer to nearing-38.

So on Arzengrande, a normal human can live from 70 to 170 earth years. Wizards live even longer, because they interact more with mana or whatever. A highest-level archmage could extend their lifespan by double. Allowing a normal human to live for 340 years, potentially.

Of course, this is all just for humans. All other races are either far longer lived or biologically (or otherwise) immortal.

Milo, having been a very proficient wizard in the past, probably looks a few years younger than he should.

However, now that he is no longer on his homeworld, his aging will be more like that of a normal person, unless he figures out a way to prevent it.

Since he can still use magic, it's probably possible. Wizards in arzengrande use two things to cast magic, their "Mana Core" which is an aspect of themself, and "Ambient Mana" which is the fuel they use.

Two talents make a great wizard. A powerful inborn core is determined at birth (can be supplemented with some very expensive and rare items as well) and puts a limiter on strength. Meanwhile, the amount of ambient mana one controls relies on their focus in the moment, training with the spell, and overall ability all of which have the opportunity to be improved often.

Also, to split 'wizards' into a few stages, this will give you an idea of where milo was and where he has fallen to.

1. Novice (can use a few basic spells and is still learning the fundamentals)

2. Apprentice (has a small selection of spells for some circumstances, knows the basics)

3. Intermediate (has a fair selection of spells in many circumstances, refines the basics)

4. Licensed (has a large selection of spells for most circumstances and meets the minimum power requirement to be considered lethal)

5. Prestige (has a vast selection of spells for all circumstances, as well as significantly increased power and versatility against other wizards)

6. Master (has the power to defeat multiple other spellcasters of lower tiers, by themself with no preparation time. these people are considered valuable assets to a country)

7. High Master (basically an archmage. can throw meteors around and bring themself back from the dead with clone bodies or whatever. illusions to deceive entire crowds et cetera. basically a WMD)

8. Grandmaster (very few people in history have reached this stage, and none are alive in the current Era. These people are basically 'gandalf' where you have no idea what he is capable of, but it's far more than everyone else in the area combined. capable of hax feats and single handedly deciding regional wars)

In his prime , Milo was a Prestige Mage. Now, he's of course a Novice, knowing only one spell. He still has all the knowledge and talent with spellcrafting as he did in his past life, but much of that may not apply in this world.

I'll post when I can, but my schedule is chaos and I just spent the last several days working 12-15hr days. More like nights. Its a bit of a blur.

I don't plan specifically on breaking off from the group, but we don't seem to have much cohesion. However, I am allowing for alternative options to also accommodate my sporadic schedule.

Re: Off Topic

There is definitely a lack of cohesion at the moment. Normally, I would de-escalate any dissatisfaction between characters to the point of metagaming, because that's what GMs expect

Since Oracle has already given her blessing, I'm running things on my end much more naturally, as GM burden isn't an issue for us to worry about atm.

Also I'm sorry to see you've been wringing yourself dry at work, try to stay sane lol :)

Re: Off Topic

Looks like a dead game for sure.

I was definitely looking forward to playing this character, but I'm not too bummed about losing the setting, since we hadn't really been revealed much of it yet.

All-in-all, I don't mind because I can always recycle this concept - or a similar one - when I get the chance.

I'm gonna remove this from my watchlist now. There is no GM around to actually remove my character from the game unfortunately, but there's little difference.

If you have similar feelings about Lyndis, I can only offer my assurances that this site has a whole lot of places for users to run elves in the forgotten realms! Then again, you may already be aware of that since I don't know your history on this site. I've only been here for a few years myself.

It may be worth noting that the GM did state they were a 'full-time mom' or smth like that, so it is plausible that they just ran out of time to run this game, and didn't have the courage to break the news to us. That would be a bit ironic, since most RPOL users prefer to be told when a game is shutting down rather than being left in the dark.

So, I assume their circumstances changed and they either lacked access to the internet or had no headspace to check in with online gaming buddies.

Hopefully, it's nothing serious. It could be something commonplace like 'moving across state lines' or 'promoted at work but mandatory overtime'

Then again, with how the world is at the moment, it is easy to be pessimistic.

Regardless, I enjoyed what little interactions we had, and I wish the best for all of you (including the GM) in your real lives and in your future gaming experiences!

Peace :)

Re: Off Topic

Heh. Yeah, I've been on RPoL for years. I have a couple of other games that I am in.

I was looking forward to playing Lyndis because she's actually the very first tabletop character I ever played back in college. (I got the red box when I was a kid, but I didn't  have anyone to play with, since I lived out in the boonies. It wasn't until college and 2nd ed that I actually got to play.) So, she was a trip down memory lane, for me. All those party members that she mentioned? Those were characters played by my friends, back in the day.

And, I completely understand if she wasn't in the right headspace. Been there, done that. I ended up ending a game I was GMing because I was overwhelmed by RL issues plus the pressure of running a game.

Hope ya'll find something else to play and maybe our paths will cross again! :)
