Hi everyone and welcome to the game!

I will post the character generation rules in another thread but basically you will be using the D&D 5E character generation rules. You start as 1st level characters, using the standard array and can be any background or class you want.

There are a lot of players but basically that's because online games tend to have a lot of drop outs so it's better to have more than less players.  Initially your characters will all be together but once you reach the first main location you guys will be able to split up into smaller groups, hopefully with your own goals and aims, and explore the Underdark at your leisure.

Posting rate will be once a week, on a Sunday is when I will post a game post that moves the game forward, but I will try and reply to individual posts once a day during the week.

If you have any other questions or comments let me know

Another thing is that once we are into the game properly I will be posting on a day by day basis, not actual in real life days but rather in game days, so the first proper game post will be Day 1 and I will roll for random encounters and so on and work out movement and you guys will be able to post up what you did during that day, if nothing comes up I will move onto the next day and then repeat the process as you travel towards the first location.

Hopefully I will work out better than it sounds now that I read it put loud.

If there is an encounter we aren't going to roll initiative, your characters will go first unless you get surprised or ambushed, and we will go in order of poster, the bad guys will go last.

Ok after I think about it I think I will just just randomly resolve each day until an encounter happens and then post a game post for the encounter while traveling.

You guys can just describe what your character has been doing during that narrative time and then we will get into the encounter.

Once we reach a decision point you guys will get a chance to put input into where the expedition goes.

For example

Day 1 heading deeper into the tunnels the expedition took note of the wetness of the walls as water seeped through the ground above.  The empty tunnel echoed back the dwarves marching feet and the torchlight thrown out by the halfling chefs and serving staff.

Day 2 the marching dwarfs are taking by surprise as a group of goblins pour out of a side tunnel in an ambush!

And then we would go into combat

Hello everyone!

I'll be playing Toramar Greymane, an underdark ranger with a legacy to live up to.

Is there any interest in establishing some character connections before we start play?

A character creation question for you DM: can we swap out starting equipment for the equivalent amount of gold? Also, do you have a preference on the format of the character sheet?

You want to be related to a once proud and wealthy noble family that is a shadow of its former self?  Joskar is a bit of a loner as well.  He spends his time searching for veins of ore and gemstone deposits.
Stonecrusher sounds like a family of miners, too.  There could be a family tie there as well.  Maybe they were attached to the Dunbeard clan until the fall.

@Braelig - Tharmekhûl also has the Light domain, so I could easily change up Reizzok so we don't have a ton of overlap.

@Flint - I could just go more blaster and do Artillerist and Light domain if you want to do Armorer.

I am going artificer as well, but as mentioned before there is bound to be overlap, and of the classes that are most likely to be cumulative rather than redundant artificer tops that list, and cleric is not far behind it.  This becomes particularly true if we end up divided into smaller groups at some point.

Bugrem Stonesinger is the a knight-errant, a mastiff-mounted Underdark Ranger of the city that fell to dragonfire; his is one of the few survivors, ferried to safety as a child with his clan's retainers and his father's signet ring. He was raised, in part, under the protection of Clan Stoneaxe and his lore and his customs are a mix of theirs and Clan Stonesinger.

He travels with: Brok, his mastiff; Jathoun, his aging protector; together with Drogo and Vigo, two halfling servants who mutter quite a bit

His clan's sigil is a mason's hammer and chisel, crossed with the hammer upright

Will post some more information in the relevant party threads

Rumours follow Bugrem - whose ranging takes him to the fringes of the wilderness, badlands and the underdark - both that he hunts greenskins with a fury, and that he consorts with them. Made my decision for Reizzok's build. Since others have shifted away from Forge cleric I'm going to stay with that in my plan, but drop the artificer for Fighter levels instead. Going for Rune Knight (fire rune at least to boost theme and boost tools).

Starting Fighter, then multi to Cleric through Cleric 4 or 5 and see from there is my thought.

Reizzok will be proficient with a boat load of tools though he'll only get to start with one set from background so probably smith's tools so he can craft or repair people's stuff while we're traveling if necessary.

EDIT - @GM we are allowed to use the Tasha's options for race/class? Want to double check before I get too far.

Re: Out Of Character Discussion

Yeah, page 7 of Tasha's features a blurb about Racial Proficiency swaps.  Mind you, it only applies to skills granted by your race and subrace, not your class and background.  It works as such:

Proficiency -> Swapped for
Skill          -> Skill
Armor          -> Simple/Martial Weapon or Tool
Simple Weapon  -> Simple Weapon or Tool
Martial Weapon -> Simple/Martial Weapon or Tool
Tool           -> Tool or Simple Weapon

So in the case of Dwarves, who get a bunch of Racial Proficiencies with various weapons thanks to Dwarven Combat Training (two martial and two simple), each of those can be swapped out for a given Tool Proficiency.  A lot of those weapons totally overlap and become redundant with martial classes's weapon access, so they basically become free tool skills instead.  Likewise, Dwarves' default Tool Proficiency choice is listed as Smith's, Brewer's, or Mason's Tools, but the Tasha variant means you can basically ignore those three and pick from any of the artisan tool sets as you please by swapping it out.

I assume Morginn won't be appearing until such a time as the expedition reaches their entry into the Underdark and starts trying to find their guide, since that's sort of her entire purpose in the narrative.  ^^;  Underdark rangers are grand, but you can't beat a native guide.

Re: Out Of Character Discussion

That's functionally what I was thinking?  I'm not clear exactly on how the DM intends to handle the portion of civilization that's just below the surface but not wholly in the Underdark, where the expedition is heading to begin with.  That's presumably where The Returned would be hanging out along with the Deep Gnomes.

It still hasn't been wholly hashed out whether Morginn coming on as the party's native guide is a "kid with a mission elbows her way into the group" sort of thing, or if Lord Rogar knows her clan and is intentionally coming to them for aid.  Either way works, really.  But Morginn wouldn't be out and about on the surface.  Plus the DM has a lot to manage with a group this size, so I can handle a bit of waiting in the meantime.

Well, I'm looking forward to how things play out. Will things move relatively quick so everyone is joined up? Will our DM run things in parallel?

With a group this large, like you said it will be a lot to manage, but people will drop out, its something that usually happens in such situations.

Dunno, though you're right about there always being drop-offs in the cast.  It's an inevitable part of online games, unfortunately, as real life so often interferes with folk's ability to enjoy their downtime.  I'm looking forward to holding on as long as I can though; it's really rare to see this sort of all-Dwarves story, so I really want to see where it goes.  ^^  Dwarves are criminally underutilized in D&D these days.

That certainly works for me. I'm guessing though as we journey, and assuming that such a large number will journey as an armed force, that Bugrem will be spending a lot of time in an advance force, scouting and reporting potential dangers. Baldin will generally be with the main force, encouraging and helping the main group to maintain their focus and morale. Maybe though we can get together and enjoy a few beer occasionally. Out Of Character Discussion

Ok so I have managed to read through this thread, but I am behind in the Connection thread so will be working through that in the next couple of days.

First of all welcome to the game everybody I haven't personally welcomed already!

To answer people's questions about posting in the IC thread before character sheet approval, go right ahead as I will be working through them and it will take a couple of weeks to get everything resolved. I will make a game post soon and we will be officially kicking off the game, and moving into smaller groups for the initial location.

The posting rate will be once a week, on Sunday, but depending on my availability I will try and reply to everyone within 24 hours.  If you want a question definitely answered PM me as that's the easiest way for me to reply to specific things, as I may miss something in a game post or thread.

I have been asked about variant familiars conjured from the Find Familiar spell.  I'm going to look into it and have a definite answer within 48 hours.

I'm also going to remove players that don't reply to the game post by this time next week or let me know that they can't post for whatever reason before then.  I fully understand about life happening but I think one game post a week is manageable even with all life has to throw at you.  However you will always be welcome to join in the future but you will have to start a new character.

Finally I want to thank everyone for playing! I hope you all have fun! And if you aren't let me know via PM and I will try my best to fix it for you, no guarantees that it will work out but I will do my best.

Should make for a fun variety in recipe swaps since Morginn's undoubtedly been using subterranean materials in her brewing; things like mushrooms, cave algae, ash-grown root vegetables, rock filtering, and the like.  Ales and beers would be odd by comparison to what they're used to, but surely she can make some amazing vodka and other hard spirits.

I have forgotten who asked me about Familiars and what they actually asked me. If that person sees this message please send me a PM. I have no idea how I lost the previous PM.

After having looked over the Familiar stuff I think I will allow people to use the Find Familiar spell to bind one creature up to CR1 to them, but no humanoids, goblinoids or giants only monsters, beasts and aberrations. However you will have to roleplay finding the creature and negotiating with it. It also doesn't get a respawn if it dies, that's it, game over for that Familiar.  Which also means that you can't bind another creature to you using Find Familiar, you will just have the core spell.

It makes sense to me to have multiple threads like that due to the sheer number of characters in one spot. Easy to lose a reply on just a single page if everyone posts. Will get much cleaner once everyone starts to group up and split up.

Edit: Also, if you mean a reboot of the Shogun miniseries, I really REALLY hope they fix all the inaccuracies in it. Like Memoirs of a Geisha as well.

Re: Out Of Character Discussion

Yeah sometimes they ruin things with remakes/reboots etc.

Which is the norm lately, as they have been remaking everything under the sun.

On another note. Is it worth dipping into Fighter or should I just stick to the Barb class.

Unless you're really keen on the capstones of a given class, taking a dip into Fighter is rarely ever a bad idea.

I say 4 or 8 level as a fighter is worth it for the barbarian. Just for base features alone for second wind and action surge + anything from the archetype. Champion would make ideal if not maxed out in taking all physical skill proficiencies example and helps to get crits as a barbarian (or battlemaster for maneuvers). With 8 levels do note you get three ASI's than just two so that itself is good.

Albeit if you think can reach Str 20 and Con 20 by 20th level, the barbarian capstone is a pretty sweet deal.

However, I advise *avoid* multiclassing until you reach 5th level where martial types get a second attack. Or you multiclass as a fighter and stick to it until you reach 5th level and then consider continue barbarian. As the second attack is a big spike of damage to martial classes.

I was thinking of taking Champion. For like you said Millie that extra crit chance.

So either 4 or 8 levels. Hmm...

Yeah I like that Idea.

I haven't decided if it'll be Rune Knight for the extra Strength boost, and enchantment options, or Battlemaster for the extra damage and combat versatility.

Re: Out Of Character Discussion

I suppose its depends on what your feeling for the Character.

Is he the type to be more of a tactician while in the midst of battle, or is he more likely to prepare before hand then enter battle ready for whats to come?

Re: Out Of Character Discussion

The alternative is go also eldricth knight, albeit raging and spellcasting don't mix but you got options outside raging/combat (and also able buff yourself with a spell and then keep concentration as you go mad with fury).

Albeit rune knight is strong and thematic pic for dwarf combatant as runic magic is common among dwarves.

Also, samurai, albeit name indicates sort eastern influence but it can fit any 'lord devoted' warrior with sense of honor. Albeit getting an advantage to all attack rolls you kind of already get as barbarian (but without giving advantage to enemies + temp HP is a nice trick). Also makes you better at social situations in 7th level + extra mental save (and also bonus skill profiency in 3th).

Re: Out Of Character Discussion

You can't keep concentration when your raging. They nip that right in the bud, if you are able to cast spells, you can't cast them or concentrate on them while raging.

I entertained the thought of a Barbarian Monk, because that just sounded entertaining.

Re: Out Of Character Discussion

You only mix monk in if you're going to dip fighter for the unarmed fighting style so your fists become d8 weapons instead of d4, so your unarmed strikes don't suck. Cool monk stuff also tends to use your bonus action, so depending on your barb plans you may not be able to use most of your cool stuff anyway due to action economy.

Re: Out Of Character Discussion

Base Monk stuff tends to rely heavily on Unarmed Strikes in order to even trigger their effects at all, however.  So short of getting DM approval to activate them via a Monk Weapon or switching to a non-weapon combat focus, Monk combat perks don't mesh all that well with other martial types from my own experience.  Honestly, I've never understood why RAW Monk relies so heavily on unarmed combat when there's built-in rules for Monk Weapons as part of the class itself, let alone with the Way of the Kensei being a weapon specialist.

If I was going Eldritch Knight, I'd mix in at least 2 levels of Paladin to 8 levels of Eldritch Knight.  Then decide from there.  But for this game, I'm starting Barbarian.

I like Monk (Drunken Master)/Sorceror (Draconic).  Unarmed attacks, greater amount weaponry, spell versatility that beats Way of the Four Elements (though some of those powers are cool).  And don't forget the AC bonus from having scales.  I have a character with a naked AC of 17.
