A great variety of persons live in Harlem in the 1920s/30s. In 1920, approximately 400,000 African-Americans make up 70% of Harlem, most having migrated from the South in the beginning of the 20th century seeking an escape from repressive laws and rural poverty/
There are also around 100,000 from the islands of the West Indies, speaking Spanish, French, Dutch and English. Some of these people, especially those from islands once held by the British, may have ancestors brought from Indian states or other colonies in Asia.
Black persons who may have lived in the North as freedmen for generations were also drawn to Harlem as its creative renaissance blossomed. Many colleges, especially in New England and New York had admitted Negro students since before the Civil War (including Miskatonic University in Arkham, Massachusetts).

There were also about 180,000 Jewish residents (most commercial establishments are owned by Jews) and 150,000 Italians, as well as various white residents, some of them well-to-do and tracing back to early Dutch and English settlement, others of moderate means or even impoverished more recent immigrants of many nationalities.
Well-to-do Jewish residents mostly live in West Harlem, less successful ones in East Harlem. The Italians also reside mostly in East Harlem.

I’m hoping most players will choose to experience the setting as Black investigators, but I’ll consider other backgrounds as well. See Harlem Occupations for some setting-adapted occupational choices.
