Hagrid's Happy Hour (OOC )

Hi
I'm playing Arty- athlete, quiditch fan, lover of all things sweet. Dislikes are bullies, people who are offended by his muggle mother, and people who think they are better than in general.

Ahhh, Rus is all hard-work and ambition. Neither opposed nor inclined towards athleticism, I am afraid. He's from a pureblood family but doesn't have a stick up his butt about it. He definitely dislikes those who rely on talent or some innate deservedness over hard-work.

Hagrid's Happy Hour (OOC )

Jay or JJ as my character likes to be referred to is a quiet and wise beyond his years child who is smarter than he thinks and harbors a very dark secret(thanks a lot DM for giving his full name! *rolls eyes* lol)Very secretive of his past. Loves hockey. American. While shy certainly no pushover. Largely one of those loner, brooding types that likes to keep to himself but is too polite and honest to be a antisocial person.

Sara, or at least her accent, is part American as well.  Although she is entirely devoted to Quidditch for her sport of choice and doesn't think herself an athlete, very few would describe her physically as anything but athletic.

Pandora's a descendant of Marius Black, burned off the Black family tree for being a Squib.

She'll probably be another Quidditch player, though not really athletic.

Oh hells, did I get stuck with a bunch of Gryffindors!?!

Rus' only connection to Quidditch is a general family love for it as is common in wizarding families and his big sister who plays on a French team. Rus' mum was born and raised in France to British parents. A branch of the Umbridges who chose to sit on the sidelines in the Dark Times. His father's family sat on the sidelines within England. His family is very international.

Hello everyone!  Happy to be here and looking forward to playing with you all.  Bella is a bit of a tomboy and loves Quidditch so hopes to be on her house's team one day.  She isn't stocky or overly athletic looking but she isn't fragile either, definitely in that gawky pre-teen stage.  I don't think she'll end up in Gryffindor but we'll see what the Sorting Hat has to say.

Hagrid's Happy Hour (OOC )

OK, the Gm stated in his advert that he wanted a single house group. I can jive with that as long as it's not Gryffindor. I mean, really. Alternatively, for a larger group a two house situation was mentioned.

So, what's the plan for houses? I can happily go with Hufflepuff or Slytherin for Rus. There's a couple characters that definitely don't read as Slytherin though.

I mentioned it in the creation rules - we'll start in Diagon Alley with picking wands/familiars/other animals. You may chose a wands fitting your style or if you like the surprise you can also use the wands table and dice for it.

Languages - anything that seems reasonable is fine. It would not be unreasonable for example to know French, English and German if you have traveled a lot or have relatives or other good reasons,or know Latin, Greek and at least basic Arabic if you were a scholar from young age - those are main languages of magic.,

I expect we're all to start with the standard set of goods all first years are allowed to bring to Hogwart's. If I recall the lore correctly, variations upon the theme are fine but nothing not on the list. For instance, first years aren't allowed brooms.

Well, obviously, we're to pack personal items as well, but unsure what sort of limits existed on those. Muggles bringing muggle items is a question. Dad's watch, mum's hairdryer, a cellphone...

Hagrid's Happy Hour (OOC )

It depends on how you want to build your narrative. For open style games, location based threads can be nice. I have found in longer games these threads get really cluttered though. People don't do great at keeping Time stamps in them to separate scenes.

IN a game with a more narratively strong line, I recommend threads by scene. When the scene changes, new thread. Scene changes don't have to mean new locations as much as a new story element.

Thread by scene is easier to follow but not easy for open world games where the players can go anywhere.

Of course, I have  seen GMs try a combination of the two. Numbered plot threads for storylines and open location threads for between plot elements.

Hagrid's Happy Hour (OOC )

I find that both of these things have their value, and if the complexity doesn't become problematic you actually want to do both.

Have a main plot thread, this has a time component to it, is where the significant majority of NPCs show up, and most of the decisions matter for everyone.

Then have side rooms, these exist in a semi out of time or montage type place in the story.  House specific rooms, classes, the forest.  These are places that the location is more important than when it happens or even who is there or in what order.

Magic isn't invisible to Muggles. Dementors are, a fact that nearly gets Harry thrown into Azkaban. Remember he performed the Petronis charm in front of his cousin to ward off Dementors, which his cousin would have seen had he not been catatonic.

my understanding, which may be a misunderstanding of the magicial liason office's functionality, was that the muggle mind misunderstands what it sees much like how the mist effects mortals in percy jackson.  Its not invisible, but what they comprehend is a skewed.

Re: Hagrid's Happy Hour (OOC )

First post in thread:
Snape's Ghost:
The Leaky Cauldron, Tuesday, August 16th 2018, late morning

The constant rain beating down on the streets of London had certainly caught nobody by surprise - not the muggles - because as everyone knows, muggles constantly talk about the weather as if it was the most important thing in the whole universe - and certainly not the wizards and witches, who employed specially enchanted weather houses which actually worked, unlike the muggle trinkets supposedly based on some sort of science.

What did surprise the wizard and witches - not the muggles, of course, as they knew nothing about the wizarding world - was that this lousy weather was also present in their favorite shopping street - Diagon Alley. It was not that there wasn't ever rain in Diagon Alley, indeed there were sometimes even storms, especially in winter when the magical weather control insisted on snow even when the rest of the city, that is to say, the muggle world, was drenched in the usual rain. But in July and August, when most students about to go to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry were shopping for supplies, great care was taken to have no rain and at least not all the sky full of clouds. Research had shown that students did a lot better, including spending their money wisely, when the day's weather was as positive as it could be.

For whatever reason, the weather magic was off, though, which was easily concluded from the wet wardrobe of four sour looking, middle-aged wizards and one witch, all of them standing shivering in front of the bar, ordering tea and sandwitches (not an error, those artistically sliced sandcakes really looked like witches on brooms). The witch sneezed and got out her wand, conjuring up an ongoing blast of hot air, which did not only help to dry out the wet folk but also raised the slightly chilly temperature inside the pub to somewhat akin to a sauna for a moment.

"What's with the weather, now? Could you not do anything to fix it?"
the innkeeper asked, polishing a glass so fervently it was obvious that she was not all that happy about the situation.

"Now now you try to fix something when you don't know what the problem is,"
one of the wizard said, sneezing and coughing.

"Then you obviously find out what the problem is! Seriously, what do they even train you for..." The admonishing of the slowly drying group went on for a bit.

You've all entered not too long ago, probably being fascinated by the charm of the old pub if you haven't been here before. Figures that on the day you finally get to do your shopping something like this would happen.

Re: Hagrid's Happy Hour (OOC )

Yes, I have been making sure to use formal words. Use of the word Vous for You instead of Tu (informal). I am given to understand there is a conversation most French use to shift from formal to informal with one another if they are peers. I am also aware enough that my google translated French is terrible. I can read and follow a bout 60-65% of the conversation without it but cannot type most of it.

I am sure the lack of idioms is also a big tell as well as simple syntax and grammar when native speakers would use more complex forms naturally. Also, colloquial stuff and we certainly don't use southern accents. Not even sure what that would look like in text.

Anyway, it works for RPoL. Even if i wish I had better French.... my circumstances make other languages more pressing to learn. Alas, my language ambitions are constantly thwarted.

Right now, I am slowly absorbing Mandarin Chinese...

Re: Hagrid's Happy Hour (OOC )

I am nothing near a polyglot. Just have a knack for language. I studied English in college and spent a lot of time on linguistics and linguistic anthropology because it is fascinating.

I've tried to varying degrees of success to learn a dozen languages the last two decades. So far, French and Mandarin are the only ones growing at any pace.

Good grief, with the zoom boom, I should try to find a French language exchange!

Still, living in Taiwan makes Mandarin far more important.

Other than that, a bit here and there of Japanese, Latin, Old English, Tagalog (my partner is Filipino as well as my daughter), and some things here and there of Spanish and German.

IDK, language has always been one of those things my brain moves into, deconstructs, and absorbs readily. I just don't have the willpower to stick with it until I achieve certain levels of ability.

Still, language exchange is a good idea!

I love the interaction going on but unfortunately I don't speak or read French.  I have down that Bella can but was hoping we could just note that our players were speaking French.  Having to try to google translate everything being said is going to be very time consuming, and then time consuming again to try to respond back in French.  :/  I apologize profusely for not being able to communicate in anything but English, but I'm actually quite a bit older and we were never made to learn other languages in school and circumstances in life have prevented me from being able to have time for extra learning.

Re: Hagrid's Happy Hour (OOC )

Oh, apologies. I really didn't mean to get carried away. Though I was having fun and enjoying the RP, it certainly is not fun for others to feel alienated. And it is no good to potentially derail the game.

I really mean that, sincere apologies.

I think it is fine for us to shift to the "we're speaking French" sort of comments or using the RPoL language codes, yeah.

@ Kate - Yeah, Ravenclaw is certainly there. Rus is a rather solid Hufflepuff and an extrovert. Which is stupid hard for me to RP. Him being chipper and friendly is so not my personality in the least. But it is fun to RP outside your comfort zones occasionally.

@ Arthur - I am very sorry if I played a part in you feeling that way. It was not my intention.

@e everyone - Apologies again. I'll be shifting to noting the language Rus is speaking rather than posting like that. Well, unless Kate is up for it and we're in one-on-one situation. If language groups are set up, I may try that.

We'll get back to Gringott's in a moment. JJ, Sara, Rus and Arabella should by now get a strong urge to investigate what's going on at Gringott's.

As for languages, it's ok to use French in short sentences, I did that now, too, but it is indeed better to just indicate foreign language. Unless you encounter a language for a first time.

Ravenclaw or hufflepuff here :) Kate's an easy sort for Ravenclaw, but how much of that is because she's been alone most of her life, only relatives, tutors and the occaisonal business dinner being her only company.  Hence Fenny is her best friend every, her loyal fox that she's had for 5-6 years. So, how loyal would she be to her first true friends? That's hard to say, Would it be enough to eclipse her love of books, knowledge, reading, and solitude.  She has the hard working part down easily though :P she's an intellect caster though.

Re: Hagrid's Happy Hour (OOC )

Well, I expect that we will be having interactions outside classes. I also expect some classes to be held together as was shown in the books and movies. I get the feeling that important lessons will be afoot.

AS fore non-plot interactions? We're eleven. Eleven was ages ago for me. What do eleven year olds like if they have no access to cellphones, computers, TV, or the internet?

Board Games? Study groups? Trying to find cool books in the library? Lunchtime? Quidditch matches?

As for character arcs, Rus is out from his mother's overbearing shadow for the first time in his life. So I expect him to cut loose quite a bit. Make friends mostly. As an eleven year old boy with his type of temperament, it'll be a year or two before he realizes some things about girls.

Not to mentions, I am nearly certain the Potter kids and Weasley clan are around about this time. Haven't checked official timelines, but I expect there might be some events?

Unknown.

Whatever it turns out to be, I am looking forward to it.

But yeah, might want to clean up the character list.  Oh, and I am all for leaving the list depleted.

Since we all made character sheets now, what houses did we end up with? I sensed a lot of Hufflepuffs and Slytherins.
