The Lurker in the Crypt is a Classic Era scenario for Call of Cthulhu, set in New York City, primarily the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The player characters are tasked with investigating a rash of ghastly murders that have recently occurred in the area, and in so doing, uncover a malevolent secret hidden within one of the city’s darkest corners. The adventure is well crafted and provides an excellent framework for both Keeper and Investigators to tell a memorable Lovecraftian horror story.

Although it seems almost redundant to mention the inherent dangers to investigators within a Call of Cthulhu game, I nevertheless feel obligated to emphasize that there are several points where The Lurker in the Crypt can turn lethal with regard to characters’ health and sanity. Participants are encouraged to exercise forethought and caution, as many of the terrors that can be encountered are assuredly deadly.

I am using the most recent iteration of the Call of Cthulhu rules, the 7th edition, to adjudicate the game. If anyone who wishes to take part is unfamiliar with the 7th edition rules, I will be happy to help them learn the system’s core concepts as the adventure unfolds.

Lastly, although I have researched New York City, I do not have first hand knowledge of the area. If I happen to make any egregious errors with regard to the city’s geography, I can only ask any that the participants forgive me. Such mistakes aren’t deliberate and, in most instances, are likely the side effect of my efforts to conjure vivid imagery in service to the story.
