Here's my very rough general concept

I was thinking of a young half elf who as a child was sold to an undertaker and made to work as basically a slave cleaning the bodies etc
One night after a beating he wished his owner would die.

The next morning his master was found dead next to a corpse who's hands were round his neck..... Fearing he would be tried for the murder he ran away..... Turns out he has an inbuilt ability to interact with the dead....

I was thinking half elf sorcerer with the path of the dead talent

We'll see what other characters the others come up with, then think about the group dynamics and maybe start to talk about any common goals.

Then decide where you start off on the map.

Between the half-elf and the halfling we'd have social dynamics covered pretty well. If #3 is also looking at that then maybe we could go for a more in-town troubleshooter group rather than ruin-delving sorts? Or #3 and I cover some of the rougher stuff. (At least to the point of making sure that we can actually get from town to town...)

Liking the concepts above, so I'm considering playing a Rogue and perhaps close kin to either #2 or #4, so either Half-Elf or Rogue. If its the former, then sold to the same mortician and veered towards Path of the Killer; if its the latter, then veering towards Path of the Face for some other types of skullduggery.

If neither work for folks, then happy to consider other options, perhaps a Dwarf Fighter

I'm considering two options: a peddler or minstrel (whichever one #4 doesn't do!) if we're going for a completely town-focused group, or a hunter if we we want to be able to get around at all; leaning toward the latter regardless (because the skill set would still be useful and less likely to overlap).

Okay, so we're looking at a Sorcerer, a Peddler, a Rogue (or Fighter) and a Hunter (or Minstrel)?

Rogue/Minstrel would make it an entirely townie group with a lot of things to offer the locals (and someone to take a bit extra from them). They may run into trouble when it comes to surviving anything rough though (including travel).

Fighter/Hunter would make it look more like a typical adventuring band mix. Much better at handling danger, but not as much of a service troupe. Although I suppose that the dwarf could have a sideline in Performance (Bagpipes)? ;)

Rogue/Hunter (or Minstrel/Fighter) would be a midpoint between the two, and seems to be where we're leaning.

GM: Since you'll have to deal with the results, how do you feel about those options?

On a slightly more serious note, my impression of the setting is that it's mostly small/scattered thorps without enough of a population anywhere for local criminal gangs, much less a region-spanning "thieves' guild" - rogues are more the self-taught variety? (That also gives such individuals a good reason to be traveling around - you need to be gone before the locals realize that anything is amiss...)

While Alkin was sold to a mortician and raised a near slave to tend the bodies and prepare them for burial..... his was a brutal upbringing and he was beaten daily.

Just an idea to through into the mix

If he wanted a dark dark secret, maybe the rogue (getting an early start on his crime spree) colluded with the attackers. His sibling getting grabbed too wasn't supposed to be part of the deal...

Either way, it's years later and the slaver gang may not be around anymore. Perhaps there are a few left. Maybe just one or two now. And when he finally finds them? (Another good reason to travel. And to occasionally poke into places outside of the towns.)

#4: I'm currently looking at a wolfkin hunter. Maybe he and the peddler met at some point before joining up with the other two? They both have reason to be traveling, so they could end up in an expedition together, or one of them runs into the other en route to somewhere, or they even just happen to be in a town at the same time.

(The game really seems to like the "you meet someone in a cave while seeking shelter from a storm" - that one could be played for laughs if the peddler sought shelter and initially thought he'd walked in on some wild beast - might have been the first wolfkin they met!)

I like the idea of meeting in a cave.  My character probably failed his scouting roll and brought firewood to an occupied cave.  I was thinking of starting with the tanner talent so we could extend our relationship by my character as he could turn your pelts into leather and your meat into food with the cooking talent.

That would certainly be a good match! A little bit of time en route to somewhere - the map puts halflings/goblins and wolfkin in the southeast, mostly separated from everyone else by a mountain range, so they presumably headed around or through one of the passes - and then we met the half-elf brothers. Or maybe the brothers ventured into the southeast for some reason?

Could be a number of things that actually caused them to meet: trouble catches up to one (or more) of them, someone tries to rob a peddler, a haunting, an attack (maybe on a place they're all staying), etc.

Probably shouldn't have a second convenient cave meet, though!

Going with Morin being Alkin's twin, but in the fight they were separated and Morin thought he was dead. He lived off his wits, stealing food - and coin - but never straying far from town, fearful of the mists and the beasts that ranged in the night. He was subtle and quick, relying on deft hands and fast feet when pranks and tricks and misdirection wouldn't work

Perhaps he and Alkin stumbled over one another when Alkin fled the town, seeking refuge in the (cave) where he slept?

Since they travelled together, ritemaster and gravedigger, helped with a few coin and supplies that folks haven't really needed

East of Lake Mill, close by the bay and heading northward along the coast. It's north / north-east of the halfling-dominated plains and skirting past the goblin-infested Shroud into Aslene territories?

The one issue with heading northeast is that the Aslene really don't like wolfkin...

On the other hand, there's another village just west of Lake Mill, and another one north of that, so we could be heading that way from the bay-head village, along the riverbanks (which makes it harder to get completely lost) toward Moldena?

That does mean passing through goblin lands, but we have a halfling with us, so that should be okay. Or preferably just don't run into them at all. ;)

To avoid too much gear duplication (we don't want to find ourselves packing four large tends), who is picking up what group-relevant gear (particularly stuff that gives travel benefits)?

I suspect that the peddler-chef will have a field kitchen or cauldron, and we should probably have a large tent (or two small ones) and a flint and steel - though I'm not sure if those benefits stack.

The hunter will probably have a bear trap, and I'm sure that our rogue will have lockpicks; fishing gear could be useful if we do end up primarily operating near waterways. We'd have to make a point of going slow (only travel during one quarter day) if we want to do much resource collection en route though.

Gear bonuses for Making Camp won't stack, it would be whichever gear gives the highest bonus that will be counted. But there can be other uses for different gear such as Flint & Steel if you want to start fires for reasons other than making a cosy camp fire.

For rolls to avoid getting Cold, then everyone will need appropriate clothing of course.

And, yeah, I'm not going to have you start out in the middle of winter, after all, that would be mean...

I've gone with Fast Shooter as the third talent, mainly because Path of the Forest will help to cover for the inevitable bad rolls while getting from place to place.

We also need relationship lines, so... what impression might everyone's characters create on the others?

In my case (I'm still deciding on a name), you know that this young wolfkin has left his clan in the Fangwoods, but denies being an outcast. He's a good tracker and pathfinder, and doesn't seem to revel in bloodlust the way that some wolfkin are reputed to, although he still has a preference for raw meat over cooked which some might find disturbing.

Given the strong Manipulation skills elsewhere in the party, I'm reducing Morin's and beefing up other skills a bit instead - probably Sleight of Hand to 3 and Stealth to 2

With that in mind...

- He feels some sympathy for the 'not outcast' wolfkin, imagining a similar struggle to survive on the outskirts of the clan/village
- His relationship to Alkin is clear, if complicated. Blood is thick, but guilt too. He's impressed with his brother's knowledge and fairly inured to the necromancy, having made his own sacrifices to survive
- He's somewhat jealous of our peddlar, from a material wealth and skill with their hands perspective.

In terms of how folk might perceive him...

- He's not very knowledgeable, about the world or the people in it, though he's not very trusting so its naivety in a particular sense
- He's deft and swift, nervous about staying still
- He's not especially manipulative, but he can do a mean impression of other folks mannerisms and appearance
- He honours the Nightwalker - the Untamed Trickster - and Wail - the Air Goddess

OOC: Game Concepts Discussion

Sorry guys we lost power here and I had to charge the tablet before I could login.

As for relationships Copper (my character name) feels that his Wolven friend is his protector. He has no knowledge of how to survive but the basics and wants to make sure that he's happy.

The Half Elven priest makes Cooper nervous because Copper's uncle was a druid and accidentally summoned a demon. His uncle was able to banish it but there's no guarantee that this half elf can do the same.

Cooper believes that the  Rogue's lack of honsty can get in the way of making a good deal, which is important to Copper as he values honesty very much. Copper would never cheat his friends.

As time goes by, you would notice a difference as the halfling feels more secure. They would also noticed that Copper is not terribly concern with making money, only survival

Alkin's is provision since we haven't heard back from him yet, but following the examples in the quickstart...

(R-Alkin) He is cursed with a dangerous power, but seeks to help rather than to do harm with it. This is a good sign. Maybe it will strengthen him enough to control the curse?

(R-Copper) He relies on me to survive in the wilds. All that I know says that this is weakness, but I rely on him to survive in the towns...

(R-Morin) Loyal to his brother, but twitchy and untrusting, as if he knows that his past has his scent. What will he do when it finds him?

N Longbow  (2H, +2/1, Long)

N Bear Trap
T Flint & Steel
H Large Tent
* Quiver

* 3 silver

Basic containers and clothes are assumed (although Jabari wears less of the latter than the rest of you probably do).

I haven't settled on what else to get with the remaining silver, if anything. It'll depend a bit on whether we'll be starting in a town or in the middle of the wilderness.

Oof. So everyone needs to shell out 15 copper (unless they want to wear rags for 5), and judging by that table, that still doesn't give you any footwear (3 silver more)? And very few people will start with enough silver to afford that even if they don't buy anything else.

Well okay, there goes most/all of the silver...

I looked at the game's forums, and according to this: https://forum.frialigan.se/vie...p;t=4054&p=32553

Characters are considered to start with simple clothes automatically: question #4 answered in the first reply and confirmed by an admin right after.

Yeah, some of the other posts there indicate that 'clothes' includes matching shoes/boots/sandals/etc. The (expensive) "boots" from the equipment list are heavy hiking boots, hence the forced march benefit.

Now, even if we don't need to buy clothes, having a spare set between us might not be a bad idea - mishaps can ruin them, for one thing.

Can everyone make sure there is a completed copy of your character sheet in the Character Details section please?

Also, can you put a brief (please) description of your character in that section also - this is the public bit that all players can see, so only put something that would be obvious to someone looking at or talking to your character.

Any issues, just message.

The western Bellifar village - halfling lands!

With a castle and a ruin nearby if we want to go spelunking. (Because we're so well suited to fighting monsters with this group!)

Should we try to find a replacement player for Copper, or would we rather recruit for new characters? He could carry on a an NPC in the meantime; having him just suddenly up and wander off might stress the group a bit.

hi there

apologies for my part I've had to pick up the slack at work with a number of people moving on to new jobs  and my wife and I have finally after 30 years of designing buildings for others have got round to designing our own house. This took a lot of time and effort to get through planning .....more time and effort than I thought possible.

Thankfully we star building next month.

Iam sorry if my absence has lead to the game closing that was never my intention.
