The Old World(s) ....Interludes (0.25, AEON 1)

Part One:
A short time after the last ACTs....

The Chained Mountains beckoned to King Aruun, he could see his future he had decided through Dadacar's unrelenting visions and had gained levels for years now. He had found his ARETE. He had tried to map out several vectors into the Chained mountains to best ascertain a strategy for proceeding but it seemed the best way was to swim up one of the fjords and scale cliffs to get into the northern edge of the Chained. From there it would be another three months journey he reasoned, along what he thought could be a game trail, to attain the plateau in the center of the vicious range. Finally, he felt ready. The party began their task and soon found themselves walking towards their first huge test, a draconian wyrm. The fight was brutal and the Trickster was boiled alive, but everyone else managed to live, albeit with heavy injuries, but they found the worst was yet to come as they tried to recuperate from their wounds. Finding a cave for shelter was tricky as they found two nasty creatures before they found one unoccupied except for a reddish mushroom that grew nearby. By morning the Wizard was nearly killed, completely engulfed by the carnivorous mushrooms that had moved on him while he dreamt, only the act of leveling had saved him as he recovered some of his health. They began to find that little in this harsh land did not want to kill them...they learned how to set up watch and take shifts sleeping and gathering food. The road ahead would be harsh and deadly...

A Secret skirted the edges of the Gateway to the Unknown, long had it waited in a place of negative space, one ACT or another had created several pocket universes and finally, it saw that it was time. Within one of these pocket universes, a Rend had appeared in Creation, it was filled with colors that this dark dimension did not have. From this vantage point, it could see two options, one set of worlds had a great Chessboard while another did not. It slipped from the concealment, determinations, and bravery coming with ARETE, to make its way towards the place where the least godly presence could be detected. This new world held large black Eels that nearly stretched across their oceans. Therein it found what it had saved for so long to utilize, an ACT...

One of the Great Old Eels looked up to see this new power descend upon it, investing this power into it, transforming it, and crafting a new being that can swim into the space beyond the aerosphere. An Avatar was created, the creature slipped into the Eels mind and became one with it, as it rose like a bird into the sky, breaking through the surface with ease. The creature explored its home for a time before investigating the nearby 5 moons, learning. Occasionally it cast its gaze towards the speck of the Sunstar in the distance.

The Tomeborne pause from their etchings upon the walls of the Archive. Three of the Tomeborne look up to see a large stone door appear before them. They cautiously whisper nonsensical syllables to invisible friends as they push through into the Lord's Rook Castle beyond, slipping across the intervening distance from the Archive to the Chessboard in a flash of light. Therein they were scared for a time, not wanting to go forward until new colors and shapes beckoned to them. Then they looked beyond the parapets and saw all the Chessboard before them, clouds mingling with the other chess pieces. Then with growing terror, they witnessed the silhouette of Lerret and the 9 Moons beyond it. Slowly they surveyed and drank in the new things, things they had never seen and never would. Words began to scribble upon the pages lodged where their skulls would be. Suddenly another flash as one of the Tomeborne found themselves suddenly displaced again, on a beach this time, it is night. With curling lips, the creature hissed at the world around it and began to search for a quiet dark cavern, soon it was joined by one of its sibling abominations. Here they acclimatized to the jungle. They found many things to be pleasing to their mad minds, as they babbled nonsense to each other in pursuit of their explorations, ARETE making them feel emboldened, and indeed they were more than a match for most normal creatures they came up against on the surface of the world.

Life continues much as it had this past age, life continues winding down through the generations. During this time few new creatures come to be, but here and there minor variations occur, and new things begin in small steps before the big ones. Evolution continues in sporadic bursts but not at the same clip it had through the First Age. The Great Aerosphere had become full of clouds on both Lerret and many of the other Lerret-like worlds. Storms of varying magnitudes and effects were common and sometimes potentially fierce. Volcanic activity continued within the world with the heat of the churning of the Fire Spell empowering the magnetosphere to a great extent as well. Out in the cosmos, one of the larger stars in the stellar neighborhood begins to grow into its super-giant state, while it would engulf its Lerret-version entirely, though a few of its moons could survive. However it would not be long before this star would collapse upon itself, only chance would determine the outcome after that...

The humans of 5 Pillars carried on as they had for much of their early days, salvaging food from the jungle or foothills of the Chained mountains. One of the leading scholars of these early days was a man named "Goh" who was a magus, and as it turned out, a philosopher. He reasoned that mankind must learn to mark on things in order to prevent losing any knowledge they might gain in the short term. Thus the earliest form of writing came to be, a strange cuneiform style of writing, very useful for remembering numbers out in the fields. As this began to catch on, the cities began to understand simple logic, about waste and production, and the need for new kinds of measurements such as distances, heights, and weights. Development was occurring but slower than the deities thought it should. However, it was fair to say that magic as well as such things as the Source granted powers that would potentially rival any other creatures out in creation, except perhaps the Unicorns, Dark Wolves, and Saberlions.

It was shortly after posing this theory and developing a system of writing that the first Magic Duel had occurred, for a rival philosopher-sorcerer named "Cha", had taken great offense to his theory, saying that nature was best, we must be like the animals he reasoned, take what we need and move on, together! The bull-headed pair squared off for ages it seemed...but only once did it come to bloodshed. Cha had electrified Goh and he was gravely wounded. Goh had enough focus yet though and skill to fire off one word. He yells in the OLD SPEECH, "ARCHIVE!" For a moment, they can see the pair of books that magically, ethereally, launched from the back of Cha the sorcerer as if being siphoned from him. In doing so, they disappear, and then reappear inside the Archive of Souls. Here, the hungry creatures called Tomeborne reside and they rend apart the sorcerer's books, which has the effect of making Cha, a deadman before he fell to the ground. It was a dangerously shortened incantation but had proven effective in this case. Goh is praised and invited to many feasts, after he levels, his scars are not so bad. The Warrior-Philosopher sired many children after that continuing his line and legacy, likewise, his seeds of logic began to grow and spread. Herald the Air Elemental Unicorn, found Goh and also passed to his words from the beginning of their lives when they first heard the words of making, thus a bit of new knowledge of incantation was also gained for Goh's fame.

While all of this was happening, however, humanity had begun to spread beyond the Jungle and foothills of the Southern Continent, the huge forest and salt marshes on the other side of the continent were wild beyond their wildest imaginations and many in the community sought to explore its dark depths. Those who sought to move towards the Great Forest and the salt marshes far to the East beyond the savannah, which was much too dangerous to inhabit for long periods but which they might be able to cross through quickly enough to avoid the greater dangers.

The Old World(s) ....Interludes (0.5, AEON 1)

Part Two:
The Millenia of the Silence...

The Northern Continent is a mass of mountains and forests like islands between plains and wetlands. The largest of the forests lies surrounding a single great peak there is a great valley, that serves as a base of operations for the Unicorn pair, who have now reached dizzying heights leveling around the world. Their mastery of elemental gates gave them the opportunity to jump easily between all the forests in the Lerret System, a few locations were even further off, elemental nature was their conduction material, and God of Nature had indeed crafted not only the Unicorns but their abode as well, making them quite able in this regard. They jumped across the world regularly and found new places and life for them regularly. Here and there, they have witnessed many things in the fabric of the AGE and have grown wise and old, powerful in their elements and their magics. So it was when they saw darkness swelling up over the wrong horizon, knowing as they did the slumbering of the Gods. They sounded the alarm, visiting all the places in the world which may hold some help, such as the Saberlions and the Darkwolf Redfangs. Among the representatives was even Goh the Magus and Anoi the Druid. Both had been forming an alliance to teach the next generation of Druids, Magus, and Wizards. Ahead these guardians aligned to see the minions of Elemental Darkness, the giant bats, Grizzlies, and Great Clouds of Dark Beautiflies, and they flew in to smother the lights...While the night predators begin their hunting.

The God of Darkness ACTs once more, casting darkness across the world of Lerret. The Elemental Lords appear behind the Unicorns then, long have they cultivated these other Lords for just such an instance. Some rebels from the dark elementalists stay among the allied and help to stave off the worst of these attacks, but most have joined this new power. The Lords of Light shine out to create oases of solidity. They band together and push against the tide. Finally, with a yell of ultrasonic volumes Herald the Unicorn blasts through the onslaught. Then as if as an afterthought, the boom is reflected back and tosses Herald into the air, and the rest of the allied sprawling.
A Crucible Crow lands then, in the clearing, as large as the Unicorn and perhaps as powerful elementally, it had bounced the blast back and was now basking in the glory of this vicious act. The creature speaks and what comes out is the OLD SPEECH, with what feels like an unearthly booming voice, "CREATES FULL POWER EMOTION" (an incomplete rendering of the incantation but powerful nonetheless). The entire valley fell silent, a deep sadness took root within each of the assembled beings. It was surrender then, as none of the human magisters could bring themselves to speak, only the Druid could call upon the forces of nature to protect them. However, the forces of elemental darkness left them then, leaving an emotional disease to sweep through the lands, as the spell spread across the face of Lerret. The level 67 Crucible Crow, Air and Darkness Elementalist as well as Wizard, had dismantled the resistance and would soon with its new powerful patron, attempt a reversal of day and Night! The Great Eel Avatar of the Dark God swam away from the Sunstar where its dark shadow had cast itself across Lerret to gather its followers to await the right time. The Magisters chose to stay away from humanity after that because of their sickness, but now nearly all the wizards and magus had been swept from the board...

King Aruun was wearing on in years, he'd initially guessed it would take them a few months to achieve the plateau, but it appeared that they'd been lost for years. Of course, they'd grown hard and tough, making costly decisions to stay alive. It was his Defender that was the reminder of their duty and their honor. He said it would see them through the hard parts, and he had been right. For today, the Scout Shifter "Ter" had found the way finally! They crested the mazelike rough hillside to finally see the plateau ahead. The path was laid out before them, though it was guarded by creatures that flew and those that scampered along the ground, by tooth, claw, and beak. His Druid thought he could distract them long enough to get through. They had learned to work as a unit here in these badlands of the Chain and they had learned almost everything about one another in that time. King Aruun had found his calling as a Gambler, intuitively guiding them towards the best outcome, and trading their luck now for future luck in as small a way as possible, for they needed some always. This time they had more than they needed, finally, things were taking a turn for the better. They had found shelled creatures and crafted their own armors and protective clothing, fashioning items to use for weapons as well. The Druid commanded sticks to become straight shafted for spears and staves, while the Transmuter shaped matter into useful shapes for cutting like claws and others like teeth. With luck and ARETE, they had slid passed many of the most dangerous creatures they had spotted along the path. Again, they find battle as a pack of large rats emerges from their cover to ambush the party. The fighters dispatch several before they scurry back, the members of this fellowship had grown used to such battles. Finally, they attained the plateau and soared above them the glistening arch of the Crucible, which at its highest height mingled with the clouds. The Firehorse was one of the first creatures to greet them. The gigantic beast had a mane of fire and a tail to match. The blackened hide of the creature was scaled and thickly armored, however, Aruun gambled that its weakness lay between the neck and chest plates and would provide their best shot at taking the creature down. The beast kicked the Druid across the plateau so that his comrades couldn't find him after that. The Defender threw his spear with laser precision and power, propelling it through the neck of the great creature. Together the party passed through the Arch and gained significant power...

▣-▣-▣-▣-▣-▣-▣-▣-▣-▣-▣

The Southern Continent began to feel turmoil then upon hearing that King Aruun was returning victorious, the rest of the 5 Pillar monarchs quickly began to become defensive and attempted to bar him for abandoning his people so many years ago. To this, he was humbled, but he placed a hand upon the Lawbringer's shoulder and told them they had done well in his absence and he thanked them for their service to the kingdom, but their services would no longer be required. None dared to oppose him, for they had not earned a tenth of his experience. King Aruun called a great gathering and a feast, as he took full control of the kingdom now. Each of his party members became his closest ally and they helped him secure much of his domain. Each of them bore new powers and a righteous bonus to their stats, each was now uniquely powerful and useful to the world at large. The gathering took many days to accomplish but it was upon the day of the Gathering that news spread of a sickness that had come with the pilgrims from the forest and jungles. This sickness brought with it, silence and deep depression. Aruun and his people quickly closed the gates and barred them so that the sickness might not breach their protective walls. From the top of the walls, Aruun could see the masses that had come and knew that his gamble might now fail. A young sorcerer appeared to him then, warning him of the coming of the Long Night, for this Sorceror could tell the future and he guided King Aruun as advisor towards the best options, luck playing perhaps a larger role now than previously for Aruun. He secretly assembled a great corp of light to oppose this dark elemental force, composed of elementalists, the remaining magisters, and sorcerers. With his own knowledge of the Crucible, Aruun called out the dark demigod, and bade him find him and his people.

Aruun then lead all the people of 5 Pillars into the Chained peaks to take his people through the Crucible, it seemed the Darkness-aligned beings of creation were just behind them harrying them the entire way. Though without Aruun's knowledge, they seemed to succumb much faster than his own people. Soon they had been whittled down, as his own party had in many ways. Though now they had found their true path and they were able to pass through the Arch much sooner. With his people residing on the plateau, deep within the Crucible, for now, the forces of darkness seemed much less able to affect them directly. Each time they advanced they were forced into retreat. Finally, the Lords of Darkness remained to pass through the Arch themselves, but now they faced the entirety of the people of the 5 Pillars, against which they could not stand. King Aruun victorious, the Dark God fled from that place then, back to his Avatar who swam once again to the place before the Sunstar, where its shadow cast itself across Lerret, and only within the Arched Crucible did light prevail.

The 9 Moons saw as the shadow was cast upon Lerret, the once bright world below was cast into shadow and darkness. This cooled the entirety of the Aerosphere quite quickly, but it was a few hours before the first snow began to fall upon Lerret below...

The Old World(s) ....Interludes (0.75, AEON 1)

PART 3:

   The Long Night

Life continued in the twilight world of Lerret, but it grew cold and those who had experienced plenty before, now found their primary companions were hunger and shivering. Clothing became a need rather than a secondary accessory for vanity or modesty. The humans of the Arched Crucible had grown strong and wise on the plateau. They had recovered their numbers but down below and beyond the mountains lay the humans who had been silenced by the emotional disease, many had wasted away or scattered across the continent by the silence. Without cooperation, they began to die quite quickly. Some among them are still able to use their gifts to protect and warm, like other animals, but they quickly began to descend once more into a state of degeneracy, living wild among the trees.

In the years that come, the world begins to become buried beneath the icy snows and the only warm places are along the beaches near the Great Oceans, and it is only here that the snow is held back. Though occasionally glacial ice will stretch all the way down to the water before falling in.

After a time, all who had been affected by the Silence had passed from memory. Those who remained during this Ice Age are rewarded with new kinds of elementalism, as Water Elementalists become quite interested in the stuff over the next centuries.

Herald the Unicorn is gone, Electra, his mate and dedicated partner for a millennia back, stays by his side quietly until she gives birth to the first pair of natural Unicorns. Soon after they rise to adulthood, then she also passes into the Great Beyond, her soul searching for her partner's even in the afterlife.

A great metaphysical mire is forming around the World, so many have passed on to this point, their souls freed of their earthly bodies. A great swirl of souls wraps the world now, a stream that even has found it's own orbit after a fashion. With no where to go they simply remain among the living now, sometimes these ghosts are taken to be mirages on the icebergs.

Many of the Mammals survive this new ice age, but the largest of the reptilians have a difficult time with this save for those within the waters. The Amphibians also have a difficult time adjusting, but they find a respite on the island chains in the Great Ocean. The arthuropods are readily equipped to deal with long cold spells but they experience a great die back, along with almost every variety of lifeform in the Lerret system, as plant food becomes more and more scarce, ecosystems begin to collapse. Fish are nearly unaffected, for they are well adapted to changing temperatures within the ocean and can acclimatize rather fast so long as the changes are gradual, though along the coasts temperatures drop sharper than in the center of the Great Ocean.

Great Forests and Jungles still remain, though they are deep under the glacial ice in pockets or along the ocean shores. So too did the Obsidian Obelsisks become buried, though their powerful lay lines and conjunctions often create great channels of open air between one another beneath the ice. It is among these that the Draconians often find themselves meditating or in full hibernation, emerging to feed on subglacial lifeforms that have arisen in the chasms and air pockets.

On the 9 Moons life continues albeit with snowy weather, though now their trips past the Chessboard both warm and cool them, giving them a springtime feel whenever they pass out of the shadow of the Great Eel. Upon many of these worlds now, is the Coatl, creatures that can sing very sweetly it is discovered and they fly amongst the skies of the Aerosphere. They learn to navigate between them and the powerful lords among them often call upon the firebirds to light their paths and guide them with their glow, through the storms.

The world as it was is in the past, but now the gods soon awaken and find their works have survived, though it is felt there is an imbalance. One elemental power had wrought this upon creation and now it all hung by a thread.

Seeing the dangers to creation, AO once again rouses his family of Gods, "Arise my children and look upon your works. See too, that there is a new God in creation whom does not share a place in the Eternal Realm!"

Each God is granted 2 ACTS to begin the new AGE!
