KNOWN PLANETS

Jannus

The planet Jannus is located in the edge of the Fringe and bears a simiarity to ancient Earth Prime, including the same kind of sun. The main difference is that it does not tilt on its axis, resulting in the same climate 'bands' year round for each area on the globe in both hemispheres.

The climates range from total barren desert around the equator, which receives the most light and heat from the sun. Because it is a globe, as the suface gradually becomes farther from the sun, the environments gradually change from tropical, to temperate, to cold, to deeply frozen at each pole. The environment for each band is the same around the world in both hemispheres.

However, the surface itself is different for the lattitudes and longitudes (L/L) depending on the relationship to the poles. There are mountains, hills, flatlands, prairies, rivers, lakes, and small 'seas' on both hemispheres. But a L/L on the 'north' side of the equator isn't necessarily a match the same L/L on the 'south' side of the equator.

The north side of the planet was mainly colonized by humans, and because of its location in relation to a number of commonly used space 'lanes', over time its capitol, Hountain City, has become a fairly important Space Port. Powerful Entities, not the city, actually own the port and gain greatly in wealth and power from it. Because the SP is not owned by the local government, it has become a popular point for all kinds of transactions between all kinds of beings. Unless blood flows, the Entities don't usually interfer with 'business'.

The area around Hountain City is built up for some distance with medium sized towns and small villages. Farther out are seemingly endless forests. These forests produce the only valuable item on Jannus--exotic wood. This wood is found nowhere
else in the universe. It is very fine-grained in a number of colors--blues, pinks, greens, golds--and is highly valued by artists, architects, furniture makers and individuals who shape it into items affordable only to the 'well to do' for pleasure and status.

Although the north and south hemispheres are physically similar, no one has yet begin colonizing it. Possibly because of the current 'colonizers'. The Dusty Devils, a well-known and greatly feared criminal raiders gang has a large, well established home base here in the temperate zone.

So as long as the north hemisphere has room to spare, no one is going to south.

KNOWN PLANETS

Planet--Unnamed World (Sometimes called the No-Name World)

The Unnamed World is located in the fringes in the general direction of, though certainly no where near, the Pillars of Creation nebulae.

It is called No-Name or Unnamed World because the inhabitants refuse to ever tell off-worlders the name (or names) they have given it They are extremely insular and warlike. {Off-worlders usually give the planet some kind of not necessarily nice "name" when they mention it.}

The planet was discovered by a group of three Explorer teams, who were the first and only off-worlders allowed on it. All the information these teams gathered came from the K'erin, which inhabit the 'north' hemisphere. Information about the 'south' hemisphere is only what has been gained by high-altitude scans and photos.

The available information indicates there is some sort of civilization on the south hemisphere. Since the K'erin have a space-going ship, they must know about it, but obviously have no intention (as of yet) to go there.

When the Explorer teams landed on the planet, they were met by very hostile natives. But the teams' protective garb and equipment, and use of the UniSpeaker, convinced the K'erin the teams were no threat, and had valuable help and information to give them. So the K'erin allowed them to stay, and constructed housing quarters for them outside the 'city' area.

The K'erin and the visitors worked together, the teams teaching and showing, and the K'erin learning and doing. They permitted the off-worlders to stay about 73 planet years, just long enough to teach them many useful things. These things included helping the K'erin to build and operate one medium-sized space ship, the teams even providing some items and equipment from their own stores that the K'erin couldn't make.

Eventually the K'erin pilots successfully 'flew' the ship to a dead planet at the edge of their system, and back to their own. When they safely grounded at the designated site and met with their 'teachers', they gathered all of them together, marched them to their living quarters, and gave them one planet-hour to gather their personal belongings.

At the end of that hour the teams were marched directly to their ships and told to leave and that they, and anyone else, had better never ever come back. It was not an accident they were not permitted to take anything but their very personal possessions with them. Since one of the teachings was how to build excellent ground and air weapons, the teams took them seriously and no one has ever gone back to that planet.

Since then any information has not been verified by visits to the planet, but from information given by the very few K'erin who were off planet and willing to provide some information. Off-world K'erin are not off-world by choice, and some are willing to talk.

The planet is slightly smaller than Earth Prime.

Note: When the Svensen drive was created, and humanity first began spreading out across space, it was agreed that Earth Prime would be used as the Standard for measurements and descriptions of other celestial bodies.

It has a straight, untilted axis, so seasons are always the same, year round, and temperatures depend on the lattitude of any location. It does have an atmosphere that is breathable for the K'erin, but would require supplemental 'air' for humans and many other beings. Which is unlikely to be needed, as the K'erin never allow any other beings on their planet.

A range of scans and readings from space show that the planet is mainly composed of a variety of heavy metals, and is deficient of water and vegetation, although those are present in sufficient amounts to support life. They also show the surface to be mainly mountainous, but does have smaller hills and large fairly level areas in the 'north' hemisphere, where the inhabitants, the K'erin, have semi-underground cities and 'farms', which are under a translucent substance, that softens the sunlight and allows a better moisture climate for plants, animals, and K'erin.

Most water comes from very deep wells or atmosphere-breaking machinery. There is essentially no surface water, although it's rumored there may be some in caves.

However, they do supplement water supplies by trading with other beings, trading metal weapons, (they know how to make steel)such as spear and war-axe heads, unworked metals, and some jewels valued by other civilzations in return for huge bergs of ice. These are harvested from a variety of spacial locations which the K'erins cannot reach, and for some manufactured items they cannot make themselves.

When a trade is agreed by 'com, the K'erin 'seller' loads the outgoing items into their ship and meets the 'buyer' at an agreed upon location or space co-ordinate. The trades are made and the participants part, usually as amiably as possible for K'erin. They hold the icebergs they get in trade in a planetary orbit and dismember thne into chunks they can take to the surface in their ship, to melt into water.

Life on that world is extremely difficult. And to exist, the K'erin have a very hard life-style. It is always strict, difficult, and often painful, but the will to survive is always foremost.

The men are warriors, engineer-mechanics and miners. The women are baby-makers,homekeepers,and farmers. That is the way it has ever been, and that is the way it will always be, according to the K'erin.

At birth, all babies are carefully and completely inspected. If the babe, male or female, has any defects it is gently smothered by its mother, and carried away to be placed on a niche in a special 'burial' cave. The K'erin are not animals--they live harshly for survival, but not completely emotionless.

If the babe is a male,it is returned to its mother, to care for until it is big enough to walk. Then it is taken to the men's area to be raised, evaluated, and educated in what will be its life-long work.

If it is a female, it will be taken from its mother and assigned to a series of women in different areas and different ages,to learn everything it needs to know to for a woman's life. Emotional attachments are forbidden.

And if surviving is not hard enough, there is war to make it worse.

The K'erin are divided into tribes, which nearly constantly war with each other. A tribe's warriors are the most valued men of the tribe. They fight for more land. They fight for valuable items,or food, or women. They fight to keep what and where they have.

There are no signs that the K'erin lifestyle changes,or opens to off-worlders, or are likely to in the foreseeable future.
