Chapter 2: The Old Road

The Old Road (as it is locally known) is a defined path that stretches from Clayshire to Steamwind.  It predates any known history of the two settlements, though it is likely the towns have been rebuilt over the ages.  After countless generations of travelers walking over the Old Road, it is now little more than a wending line with scatterings of cobblestones.  The path is clear for three meters, after which shrubbery begins to grow.  Trees grow not too far out, though the thickness of the stands varies heavily from mile to mile.  Those who stay on the road are quite visible, and those who stray from it have little difficulty disappearing.  Banditry is far too frequent out here, though a competent guide should be able to spot trouble a day ahead.

The group has been on the road for two days now.  Syndelia, being quite familiar with this area, is able to keep the group safe from harm in all the common areas, but she is able to spot heavier than usual presence haunting the path.  Undead walk aimlessly, and the few stragglers that manage to catch sight of the group hone in on the Crowned Warrior before being easily dispatched.  Nights are more worrisome, as it is cold enough to warrant a fire, but danger lurks behind every tree and a fire is a beacon.  The Warrior does not speak much over these few days, and actually seems somewhat less agitated.  It would seem that having a purpose suited him, despite the usefulness being unknown.  Ehrendril seems pensive, nearly constantly jotting notes on his few sheets of parchment and tracking the stars.  Once or twice he disappeared from the group, only to be found staring at a constellation and having forgotten to keep walking.

The second day is coming to an end, and the moon is setting on the horizon.  The second half of the day was quiet, and the group was able to catch their breath without too much struggle.  But it is dangerous to continue through the night, and the group should consider setting up camp.

OOC: In regards to Camping, I need to know who is the leader, and what each other player is doing.  The Leader will be rolling Wandering checks; if you describe how you're helping, you can Help (Wandering) with that check; if you are doing something else, such as scouting or cooking, those will be different checks.  Unless otherwise specified, I will assume that this will be the normal setup for the group.  Ehrendril will be attempting to Hunt, Barakus will be Helping prepare camp, and the Crowned Warrior will opt to do nothing.

Chapter 2: The Old Road

Syndelia appeared from behind a tree.

"There's a clearing, some two hundred paces left,"
she said tersely. "Good place for camp, or the least bad place around here."

She had been scouting ahead, feeling safer in the light forest than in the road; having grown up in the densest part of the Grimlock Woods, open terrain always gave her the creeps.

The clearing wasn't great, but it beat the open road. She hoped it was secluded enough to protect them from any unsavory travelers going along the Old Road to Steamwind, but not so far from the road that it was frequented by wild beasts.

Grimly, she recalled how many times she had ambushed innocent travelers along that same route, shooting them from the branches of a tree or watching them be relieved of all their valuables by Dralda's Bastards. Those nights were behind her now, but it only highlighted how exposed the place was, how perilous the route.

Back then, there hadn't been any undead wandering the land, as it seemed to be a common ocurrence now. Whether that had anything to do with the crown, Syndelia didn't want to think about too hard. She was just doing her job, guiding paying clients to Steamwind, doing her best to keep them safe, and nothing more. Her eyes narrowed to slits, eyeing the crowned coward. Well, she didn't really mind if that particular one croaked, not one bit. Except then someone else would have to carry the crown, which she suspected nobody would volunteer for, cursed as it looked.

"Moon is setting, let's get off the road. This way,"
she added, gesturing for the rest to follow her to the clearing.

Might as well be Leader to find a camping site.

Syndelia the Unseen rolled 61 using 1d100+30 with rolls of 31.  Wandering (for camping).

Not great, going to need some Help here...

Chapter 2: The Old Road

Trog could not remember if he had come this way before, all the roads looked very much the same and you could not see any landmarks like he would have used underground. He had been upset to leave Clayshire there were some nice people there, people who had helped him when no one else would. Thinking about it had kept his mind occupied for most of the trek.

When they decided to camp Trog set about collecting wood and starting the fire, he then saw that it was feed with the wood he had piled close. Trog was not good at cooking so someone else would have to take charge in that area, but he would help were he could.

Chapter 2: The Old Road

Ehrendril nods in agreement, his eyes locked on the stars.  It takes him some time to finally pay attention to his immediate surroundings and store his journal away.  As the group begins to set camp in a hidden hollow off the Old Road, he grabs his bow and departs on a small hunt.  About two hours later, he returns not only empty handed, but missing half his arrows.  If prodded, he is unable to explain the loss.  "I was in pursuit of a fawn, and I do recall firing several shots at it, but I didn't think it was this many!"

Barakus, keeping a close eye on Jerec in this dangerous area, assists Syndelia with setting up a camp.  He clears brush from a small area and moves it to the perimeter, creating rougher terrain at the main entry points into the hollow.  Satisfied, he sits beside the small fire the Crowned Warrior had created, and begins warming his hands.  The Warrior himself sits silently, looking more peaceful than usual.

Chapter 2: The Old Road

Still getting used to traveling in a group, Paran tries his best to help when he can. Using his experience from the artic, he fashions several simple traps and sets out with his bow to hunt some animals. He comes upon a couple animals, but they are all malnourished. Determined to find some heartier game, he continues on. Perhaps he is being a overconfident, but he is determined to assist the group.

With the light slowly waning, he stands still and focuses for a long time. Holding his harpoon in front of him, he quietly recites the words taught to him by his elders. The harpoon in his hand slowly starts to glow. He sighs in relief as the spell finishes. Now armed with a source of light he continues his hunt. He stumbles upon a deer. The creature is startled and in the moment that it hesitates, Paran strikes true. He has a smile on his face when he returns to camp, the light of his blade guiding his way.

Chapter 2: The Old Road

Jerec had spent the days traveling mostly in silence, inwardly shocked at the undead that were freely roaming the lands. Matters were growing worse day by day and sadly their seemed the free people could do nothing about it aside from retreat inside their borders, their keeps and their towns and brood in silence, awaiting the inevitable.

When time came to set camp the mage let the others do most of the work, choosing to sit close to the fire and letting its warmth wash over him. He was relieved the Crowned Man seemed more peaceful than usual, and wanting to keep him that way avoided asking him more about what he remembered about the prior bearers of the crown, for now at least.

Ehrendril's return with half his arrows missing caused Jerec to sigh softly and give the elf a wry smile. "Tell me about the elven court friend Ehrendril, and why you do not believe you will get a warm welcome there," he queried his companion, curious about his past and trying to glean the sort of welcome they might receive once they arrived at their destination.

Chapter 2: The Old Road

Syndelia could see the place was far from ideal, but she kept her mouth shut. Partially because there really wasn’t anywhere better around, so that spot would have to do… and partially because she wasn’t going to admit to her choice being less than perfect, not in front of the crownbabe. Her pride was a bit more vulnerable than she liked to admit.

She gave Trog a nod as the troll brough a big pile of firewood in one go, dropping the heavy load like it was just a couple of sticks.

“How’s your arm, Trog? Do we have your mallet, if anything comes crawling out of the woods tonight?” she asked him quietly, moving closer to whisper. She didn’t want the others knowing she considered the place less than safe.

Then Ehrendril appeared, sans dinner and having wasted half a quiver. Classic Star Elf, Syndelia thought, rolling her eyes.

“A pity we can’t eat stars, scholar,” she quipped, relieved to see the Firbolg replace him as the group’s designated hunter. She considered joining him in the hunt, particularly because that would give her an excuse to avoid the crownbabe…

…but I don’t think I can also hunt if I have already Camped?

…but she didn’t want to further divide their forces; if something attacked the camp while she was away, they’d be in a tight spot.

So the Dusk Elf turned around and squatted by the fire, bow propped on a nearby rock. They couldn’t go without a bonfire, could they? Every. Single. Night. Absolutely unreasonable risk, but that's humans for you. Oh well. She sighed and looked into the flames, breathing in the smell of burning wood. If she closed her eyes, she could imagine she was at the hunter’s moon feast, back in Grimlock…

Chapter 2: The Old Road

As the group attempts to hide themselves within the trees, tending to a small fire for those unable to see as well as for warmth, the wind begins to pick up.  Trees sway, leaves quiver, and the fire blows sparks in a single direction.

Ehrendril stares into the fire, a look of dejection likely caused by both the failed hunt and the prospect of facing his peers again soon.  "I will tell you of the court, my friend, but I cannot speak of my shame.  I may not be welcome, but I still respect the traditions.  The Court of the Loremasters Under the Barrow is a magical place.  It is a place between the hills, under the hills, and yet so far from the hills.  Such is the nature of my people.  They live free lives, far from the cares of the world.  They philosophize about the nature of the Raven King and what He may have done to steal the sun... but that is all they do.  They wax philosophical for ages, never taking a stand.  Never seeking the truth of the matter.  They have their own truths, mysteries unlocked by the magicks of my people, but they do not see the whole picture.  They do not see what comes next, nor do they care."  He pokes at the fire, causing a shower of sparks to fly out and be blown away.

Deep in the woods, Paran not only finds the trail that Ehrendril had left behind, but also catches glimpses of a fawn with two arrows in its side, nonlethal.  With more skill than the Elf had shown, he is able to track the animal to a clearing where archery would be more efficient, and fells it with a single arrow.  As to where the other arrows went, Paran cannot say.  But it is dark and cold, and the wind is blowing hard.

Chapter 2: The Old Road

Syndelia was readying a cutting comment to Ehrendril's musing, but the sarcasm died in her tongue before it was out. For the Star Elf's tale of exile hit a little too close for comfort; she knew how that felt.

"Our people are that way, aye," she observed darkly, jaw set, eyes reflecting the fire. "All talk, no action. Tradition and kowtowing to authority takes all their time and energy, and nobody is allowed to challenge that. They have lived too long for their own good - for anyone's good."

Her voice is bitterer than she had intended; she frowns and looks at Ehrendril.

"And do you, scholar? Do you see what comes next? Does it have anything to do with the undead wandering about?"

Chapter 2: The Old Road

Ehrendril sighs, staring into the fire.  He nods at the talk of tradition and authority, something he understood far too well.  Syndelias words cut deep, but without intent.  "I believe that we are in a pivotal moment.  The Raven King's forces are closing in on the Crown.  What that means I cannot say, for even the stars do not know.  But I fear the worst if He manages to capture it.  As for the undead, I suspect they belong to Him.  Or perhaps were just awoken by Him, without direct control.  They seem to know who our companion is, but aren't hunting him constantly.  But the undead back at the Inn, they seemed to have more focus.  Perhaps they need a leader?  But you asked what their presence means.  I do not truly know, but if I had to guess, it was simply a sign of His power growing as he reaches closer to His goal?  But again, that is just a guess..."  The gloomy elf looks at Syndelia and shrugs before returning his gaze to the fire.

After returning with the fawn, he brings it over to the fire and sets it down. With a smile, be gives his thanks to Ehrendil, "Thanks for the help in tracking the fawn. If it wasn't for your trail I might not have found it."

Paran assists with butchering of the animal while quietly listening in on the conversation. He does seem a concerned with the lack of information from the stars. While it is not necessarily a bad thing, he was hoping to get some clearer answers. Thinking on the importance of the crown, Paran asks, "I don't remember if it was mentioned, but what is the point of the crown? Does it grant people powers or something else? Perhaps it is used in a ritual. "

Ehrendril nods as Paran acknowledges his contribution, but a slightly sheepish face shows his embarrassment at being unable to complete his task.  His hair begins blowing hard to the side as the wind picks up even stronger, roaring through the trees.  Further into the forest, the sound of cracking limbs can be heard.  The Crowned Warrior, sitting gloomily as ever, looks at the Firbolg and scowls.  "It is a curse, plain and simple.  It is here to drive men mad.  If not for the screaming voices in my head saying otherwise, I would say let the bastard have it."

Chapter 2: The Old Road

As Paran talks about the legend he was able to recall, and ponders how it might apply, the wind increases ever more.  It is hard to hear his voice over the roaring through the trees.  The sounds of cracking overhead grow more frequent and frightening.  Ehrendril looked as though he were about to speak, but he points up into the canopy and cries out a warning.  Only a few moments pass before a tree, which had been leaning dangerously over the camp, finally snaps and begins its rapid descent upon the group.

The tree smashes down on the camp, its wide branches destroying everything the party had worked to set up.  The fire was scattered and smothered, the remainder of the food was lost somewhere in the leaf litter.  The wind has not died down, and continues its aggression against the forest.  Around the small opening where the group had settled, the sounds of other trees falling can be heard.  It is not safe here.

OOC: Each character needs to make either an Athletics or Acrobatics roll (Hard, -20) to avoid being squished by the falling tree.  A partial success is enough, though there will be consequences.

Chapter 2: The Old Road

Through both skill and luck, the entire party manages to deftly move out of the way of the falling tree.  Ehrendril, the least physical of the group, is nearly caught and trapped but somehow slips through the tangle.  It crashes down, destroying the camp and leaving the party with nowhere to rest.  In the fray, several members felt limbs scratch against them as the dodged, ducked, dipped, dove, and dodged.  It isn't until they have been moving again for some time that they realize some equipment is missing.

The next day is long, as lack of sleep has each member on edge.  The Old Road has countless trees blown down, though they seem to have fallen before the party crossed them.  Syndelia knows that they are new, likely from this windstorm, as she hadn't seen them blocking the path before.  The wind dies down sometime around high-moon, and an hour or two later the party comes across a series of downed trees blocking the road.  However, it doesn't take much thought to recognize that these had been dragged into the road.  The blockage of trees is about twenty meters in front of the group.

OOC: Characters that had partial successes each lost one piece of equipment.  Ehrendril lost his lyre.  Paran and Barakus each lost their shortbows.  Syndelia lost her bundle of herbs.  The lack of sleep will give each character a -10 to all tests until they rest.

Each character should make a Perception test regarding these trees, before being able to approach.

Chapter 2: The Old Road

Still bemoaning the loss of her healing herbs, Syndelia guides the bitchy, grumbling group up the Old Road. She's not on her best behaviour herself, as she's had to go without meditation tonight, and the reality that this 'job' is surely going to be a net loss starts to sink in.
No point in complaining about it though: the old man would just give her his usual spiel about Fighting the Good Fight, and if the crownbabe got lippy this might be the moonday she put an arrow through his neck...

She saw the grooves in the mud just in time. Trees stand. Trees fall. But trees don't fall and then crawl through the mud by themselves.

"Ambush ahead!" she hissed, stepping off the road and behind a bush, nocking an arrow. "Get off the road and stay put. Someone's waiting for us."

Or for anyone else who happened to be on that route; it mattered little. A roadblock was never good news. She tried to see who or what was waiting in ambush...

Chapter 2: The Old Road

Syndelia vanished into the shrubbery, crawling through the bushes faster than a squirrel. She didn't wait to hear Dralda's voice, she didn't need to see her to know the ambush had all the hallmarks of the usual signature touches of the damned Dwarf. The Dusk Elf should know - she had did that herself more than once...

Silently she moved to flank Dralda's group, counting heads and equipment, evaluating their chances of winning the fight with a frontal attack - or whether she would need to be sneakier...

Syndelia the Unseen rolled 117 using 1d100+80 with rolls of 37.  Stealth -20.

Chapter 2: The Old Road

Leaving the rest of her party behind, Syndelia sneaks off into the brush as she is wont to do.  It is child's play, behaving as a shadow as she has practiced so many times before.  Moments later, she finds herself parallel to the ambushing party.  Dralda stands in the center, holding her beloved crossbow "Isolde", and four others crouch alongside her.  All in all, not a difficult ambush to handle.  Or it wouldn't be, if they hadn't found such good cover and been aiming in on the party for some time now.

"Oi!  I said drop your purses and back away!  Don't make us take them from yo... shit, where did that damned Elf go?!  Find her!"  Dralda looks between her companions, and two of them (on on each end) begins heading into the forest to look for Syndelia.

Chapter 2: The Old Road

Jerec pretended not to notice his companion(s) melt away and still leaning on his staff looked up towards the foliage and shouted, "Surely you would not rob an old man and his entourage of our meager belongings? We have but food for our travels, which we would be happy to share in return for safe passage!"

He knew he had to distract them long enough and keep them from shooting until Syndelia and the others made their move. He squinted his eyes, trying to peer through the foliage to determine the location of the bandits but could not make them out aside from hearing the voice of what he presumed to be their leader.

Deceive: 57

Without knowing where they are Jerec really cannot bring his magic to bear to aid the party. At the moment anyway.

Trog had no idea what a "purse" was or why these people want then so he continued to stay in cover and remain low if he could. Perhaps they had mistaken them for someone else ?

Paran looks at his gear, he can't help but notice how little gear he has. With a frown, he looks at the source of the voices, "As you can see, our items won't get you much coin. It certainly won't be worth the hassle of taking it from us. As he said" Paran gestures towards Jerec, "It would be better for everyone if we just have a meal and go our seperate ways. I don't want to give up my items and I also don't want to have to resort to violence."

Chapter 2: The Old Road

A crossbow bolt is the only reply that Jerec and Paran receive from the trees.  It flies out towards the Crowned Warrior, likely intended as a warning shot... however, the bolt slams into his chest and halfway out the back, a spray of blood from his heart spraying across everything behind him.  He falls to his knees, and then, unceremonially, slumps to his side.  Dead.  The crown rolls from his head, laying at the feet of those in the party.

Not knowing the significance of what she had just done, Dralda barks out again.  "Old man, lie to me again and you'll eat the next bolt.  I said all of your money.  And you, Firbolg, I don't care if you have but two coppers to play with.  Those two coppers are mine, now.  So like I said, purses on the ground and flee, like the little rabbits you are."

OOC: Holy smokes.  I'm allowing the rolls to stand as they happen, and Dralda just smoked the Crowned Warrior.  Randomly selected the Crowned Warrior, Nat 100 on her attack, another 65 on top of that, and a damned good critical strike roll.  (Note, the attack roll only says Jerec because I considered having the attack go for him instead, before I realized it was an instant kill.)

Paran, given the nature of the ambush and the fact that Dralda is a bandit leader, you would have gotten some hefty penalties to your Persuasion roll, pushing it into a failure.

Chapter 2: The Old Road

Jerec jumped as the bolt shot out and thudded into the Crowned Warrior, slaying him on the spot. He sucked in a breath, refusing for the moment to consider the consequences nor the possibilities as the crown rolled to their feet.

They had to survive first.

Quickly chanting elemental words in an archaic tongue underneath his breath he thrust his staff crosswise in front of him and suddenly yelled in a voice almost not his own, "I call upon another favor from the Eastern Wind, honor the bargain struck and defend!"

Immediately a wall of swirling wind flowed from around the mage, flapping his robes and coalesced ahead of him with a muted howl, close to where he figured the shooter had been and covering an area to either side.

"Quickly now, attack and slay them!" Jerec shouted to his companions.

Casting Stormwall: Attacks through the Wall suffer a -50 penalty. Attempting to pass through it requires a -20 Athletics test

Duration: 3 rounds

Casting Roll: 75 (85 rolled -10 for Improvised Spell) [-3 MP]

Jerec would like the wall to be as close to the bandits as possible, right in their faces would be best. Not sure what the distance would be in meters, but that could put more modifiers on the roll (page 130: range modifiers table)

Chapter 2: The Old Road

One less warm body to worry about, Syndelia thought, nocking a shaft. Crouched on the thrny shrub as is it was soft tall grass, the Dusk Elf took careful aim. She had a few seconds before the second man got too close to miss her even with his pathetic human eyes. Radagund, was his name, or something of the sort. He had always been trying to chat her up, brush against her 'accidentally' back when she was with Dralda's crew. She wouldn't mind killing him and could have done so, but she knew she had one shot before all hell broke lose, so...

Scratch that, hell was lose already. She saw the poison dwarf shoot her crossbow, and she didn't have to look away from her aiming to know it had connected with a body. She was too focused on the task to check who had gotten literally shafted, but she hoped it wasn't the old man. He was decent, if a bore. Or Paran, he had been an agreeable enough traveling companion. But the firbolg probably could shrug off shots...

"Let's see you take this, Dra,"she whispered, loosing an arrow headed for the dwarf. If she knew the Bastards, they'd all scatter if their leader was felled.

Paran sees how bad the situation is. The ambushers were prepared and were hidden in the shadows. He knew that he needed to help even the fight by providing some light. He chants while holding his harpoon in front of himself. His harpoon glows with a soft light. He begins to move towards the group.

Chapter 2: The Old Road

Round One Starts

Assessment Phase
The sound of a bow twanging was enough to alert the bandit nearest to Syndelia, and he looks around hoping to discover where the sound came from.  His eyes lock in on the site where Syndelia hides, but his lack of confidence causes him to falter for a moment.  He begins slowly creeping towards where he suspects she hides.

Movement Phase
As Jerec strides forward, casting his spell, Barakus joins him with his sword and shield drawn.  Trog, as well, moves forward hugging the treeline, hoping to stay out of sight.

Spell Phase A
Before any have the opportunity to strike, Jerec summons the winds to protect him and his, a magical talent he had a particular knack for.  Almost immediately a roar of turbulent air erupts before him, threatening to shake all the foliage from the tree cover the bandits hit behind.  At the same time, Paran holds his harpoon before him, chanting words in a distinct language, one that the party cannot understand.

Ranged Phase A
Having unleashed her bolt, Dralda begins reloading her crossbow with haste.  She has enough time to cry out "Take the gold with their blo..." before an arrow slams into her from the side.  The two bandits still behind cover launch their own attacks, one aiming at Jerec and the other at Barakus.  The deflection of the wind-spell is enough to divert both bolts, and even causes one to falter and attempt to reassess how to hit the enemy party.

Melee Phase

Ranged Phase B
The bandit aiming at Jerec begins reloading his crossbow, hoping that with enough bolts, perhaps one would strike true.

Spell Phase B
Paran finishes his spell, and immediately his beloved harpoon begins to glow with a cold light, reminiscent of his arctic home.  While it makes the Firbolg more of a target, it also helps illuminate the targets, and the enemy bandits are now clearly visible through the brush.

OOC: Dralda is wearing a chain shirt and has 30 to defense (medium, metal).  The other four bandits are wearing leather jerkins and have 20 to defense (light).  The two next to Dralda, and Dralda herself, have partial cover for a +20 to defense.

Syndelia needs to make a Critical Success check for Lethal damage (+50).

Chapter 2: The Old Road

Round 2 Starts
Dralda would have been a great bandit leader, but then she took an arrow to the knee.  She falls to the ground as her blown-out joint fails her, and blood begins to slowly pool around.  The two bandits closest to her begin to swear and drop their crossbows.  They are clearly not interested in a fight of this caliber, especially without their leader.  The bandit nearest to Syndelia finally catches sight of her and raises his crossbow to fire.  The fourth bandit, the one sent off to find Syndelia in the wrong direction, is nowhere to be seen.

Chapter 2: The Old Road

Jerec had been preparing another conjuring when two of the bandits threw down their crossbows. He cautiously moved towards the side of his wind barrier when he saw one of the bandits aiming at Syndelia.

Raising an arm with two stiffened fingers extended and pointing towards the bandit, he uttered a quick incantation under his breath; his arm tingled and a bolt of lighting erupted from his stiffened fingers and struck the bandit in the back!
Spellcasting Roll: 194 (Outstanding success!) Jerec chooses to use only half magic points for this casting. -1MP

Bolt Attack: 110 vs LA(6 Sup); Critical: 86 (Blast to chest stops foe's heart for a moment: +10 Damage, Prone, Stunned, and target drops any metal object they're wielding.)

Still he stay in whatever cover he could find, waiting for an opportunity to come his way.

Wanting to distract them from attacking his allies, Paran shouts, "Why are you looking at them? I am the one you need to worry about!"

Paran rolled 85 using 1d100+45 with rolls of 40.  Charisma to attract attention

I am not sure what the difficulty would be for this.
