Setting Information

Notes about the land
  1. The world is dark.
    • The Raven King stole the sun, therefore the moon is the brightest celestial object.
    • Trolls have been multiplying at frightening rates, and other creatures of the night have been growing more powerful.
    • Settlements often have fires burning nonstop, and even the occasional dry-land lighthouse.

  2. The world is untamed.
    • Even before the Raven King stole the sun, conflict spread across the land and no accords were made.  Much of the world has not been settled.
    • The ancient roads are havens for bandits, but the woods off the path are full of creatures.
    • Many cities have manned walls, though hamlets often do not have the same protection.  But still they survive somehow...

  3. The world is mostly unmapped.
    • While many people know the general location and stereotypes of other cities and regions, they don't know exactly where they are.
    • Beware the man who offers to guide you through a mountain pass.  He will certainly know the area better than you, and have more friends.
    • Travelers from strange, forgotten worlds still roam the land.  Perhaps they will share a story.

  4. Cities are few and far between.
    • Due to the darkness, many villages and small settlements relocated to larger cities, hoping that a more dense population would keep them safe.
    • It is not uncommon to go days, or sometimes weeks, without seeing a large settlement.
    • Small hamlets and villages hide in the dark, some people are unwilling to live in a cage.
    • A common punishment is exile, as it is as close to a sure death as any magistrate can sentence.

  5. Cities are unsavory.
    • The isolated nature of many settlements make them breeding grounds for crime.
    • A lack of resources means that what you own may suddenly be "found" by another individual.
    • Absolute power corrupts absolutely... and there are few who can challenge the absolute power of the ruling class.

  6. The darkness is magical in nature.
    • The moon still rises day in and day out.
    • Days are marked by the moon, rather than the sun.
    • The lack of sun hasn't stopped most plants from growing, nor animals from surviving.

  7. The world is between ages.
    • Ruins, statues, and ancient roads are scattered across the landscape.  Even the wisest sages know little about the civilizations that created these.
    • Without any major empires dominating the land, many different groups strive for power.
    • Treasures long forgotten are waiting just outside city walls.  But not all can be understood by the common man.

Notes about the game
  1. Maps are rare and expensive.  Instead, word of mouth guides travelers, and small local maps may exist.

  2. Despite the sun being gone, the game will be treated as one long night instead of the apocalyptic nightmare that would realistically occur.  Flora and fauna still exist, and have adapted to the moonlight.  Food is still available, though perhaps more tropical options no longer exist.

  3. The world will be treated as Dimly Lit, but the presence of Night Vision and illumination will allow travel to be treated as Brightly Lit.  This is to be a fun game, not a blind flailing of the lost and damned.
