Introduction & RTJ

Welcome to Monstrous. You'll take the role of a monster who has found kinship with other monsters. Together you've hatched a plan to not only escape the humanoids, but hopefully start your own civilization somewhere far from prying eyes. The journey will not be easy. Guards roam the streets, and monster hunters roam the wilderness, and greedy murderous adventurers can pop up anywhere. You'll need to keep moving, hunt for resources, and--most importantly--work together as a team to survive.

To play this game you're expected to:
  • Post at least 3 times a week.
  • Read all the material listed here and follow instructions.
  • Be respectful of others and be a team player.
  • Listen to the GM, not argue with them.
  • Be clear in distinguishing IC and OOC commentary.
  • Speak up, out, and against real-life bigotry, bullying, or anything that violates RPOL policy.
  • Don't take the game TOO seriously. Just enjoy it and have fun!

In your RTJ, list a description of your monster's:
  • Name
  • Species
  • Appearance
  • Personality
  • Powers and abilities
  • Short backstory

Keep the entire post under 500 words.

A GM will either approve you or recommend a different concept.

Good & Evil
No alignments or alignment-based abilities will be allowed. Good and evil is subjective on a cultural scale, there are shades of gray in every situation, and it is more about circumstances and perspective. The assumption that some races are more evil than others is mostly the result of cultural, linguistic, and political misunderstandings, rivalry, or bigotry. This game aims to show how "monstrous" creatures can still be people and not just any people: heroes.

You will be faced with moral dilemmas where you will have to choose to take the difficult high road and prove you are different than your enemies and the monsters they make you out to be, or embrace a survival of the fittest mentality and rise above all others.

Monstrous is a homebrew game based on the 5th Edition of Dungeons and Dragons. There are several major differences:
  • No Backgrounds, Classes, or Races
  • New Action economy
  • Makeup and buy your own traits, feats, spells, etc. with XP

Firstly, there are NO CLASSES and NO RACES and you build your monster from scratch rather than the normal progression track.

Monstrous also has a different method of attribute score generation and advancement. No feats, features, spells, etc. boost your attributes like they do in 5e.
In 5th edition, you get 1 action, 1 bonus action, 1 reaction, 1 free attempt to "interact" with the environment as part of one of your other actions, and 1 free movement up to your base speed during your turn.

In Monstrous, we organize and simplify this to 3 actions and 1 reaction. Anything in 5th edition that normally required "1 action" or "1 bonus action" now requires 2 actions in unless noted otherwise here. Movement is simply 1 action and interacting with the environment is also 1 action.

Basic actions have been listed here.
