Casovel is the southernmost of the northern kingdoms, and thus, it is the one most directly threatened by the Esparian legions and their constant probes on its borders. It has developed a fiercely militaristic culture as a result, with all citizens obligated to serve in the military upon reaching adulthood (including the women, though they are usually treated a touch more gently and assigned to non-combat roles). Casovel is aggressively opposed to surrendering to Espara, and has so far managed to hold its borders secure for nearly a decade. This is in no small part because it makes liberal use of magic in its warfare, ranging from portals to shorten supply lines to fireballs to decimate enemy formations. The phobia of magic common in most northern lands is much reduced, here, and mages flock to Casovel to enjoy relative freedom - provided they are willing to serve in the military.

Casovel is ruled by King Adelbert IV, himself a mage of no small power who leads from the front in war as well as diplomacy. He is commonly called a brilliant strategist (nearly on par with Marcoul) and firm in his values. Detractors call him an egotistic, militaristic, pompous, and hidebound man, and that is true as well.
