Character Generation

I have accepted seven people into the game. These are the spots that are needed to be filled in terms of the crew based on the player characters:

Captain
Pilot
Astrogator
Engineer - Will have 1 NPC maintenance crewmember working under them
Gunnery Officer - Will have 1 NPC gunner working under them
Medic
Security Officer - Will be in charge of 2 NPC security personnel

Note that all PC roles will be recompensed at 2 shares each, with the captain receiving a 3 share bonus on top for being burdened with glorious purpose. NPCs will be recompensed at 1 share apiece.

I'll leave room assignments for you to work out as a crew. There are 4 officer staterooms, equipped with double beds and 4 double occupancy crew staterooms equipped with bunks.

Work out your characters, let everyone know what role you are looking to fill and what roles you can back up.

Given the nature of character generation in Traveller I would recommend that you look into RPGSuite as a means of generating your character. If you prefer to generate the character by hand that is fine.

Zagygthemad also delved into the depths of Castle Greyhawk to provide Mark Munson's online character generator here: http://www.munsondev.com/charg...sNODVhm2PE6IcwrQIUs0

I don't have a character sheet format so feel free to create your own. If anyone wants to suggest something then I'll take a look at it.

Character Generation

(We don't have another thread to talk in yet, so...)

Khuevaengh, vargr of many careers:

Str   7 +0
Dex  12 +2
End   9 +1
Int  12 +2
Edu  12 +2
Soc   6 +0

0 Admin
0 Athletics
0 Carouse
4 Electronics (Comms)
1 Electronics (Computers)
4 Electronics (Sensors)
1 Engineer (Life Support)
2 Gun Combat (Energy)
0 Language
3 Mechanic
1 Medic
1 Melee (Infighting)
0 Profession
1 Profession (Construction)
1 Recon
0 Science
1 Stealth
0 Streetwise
0 Survival
0 Tactics
1 Vacc Suit

The Harrier's Astrogator station covers comms and sensors, and you probably want him doing those - but someone else would have to handle the actual Astrogation!

Also good at keeping the ship flying (but not actually flying it) and can cover many other jobs in a pinch.

Let's have discussion on characters and roles in this thread. I will create an OOC thread for the game. If you want to address me directly you can PM me.

Nice template. I appreciate the work.

In terms of determining statistics I'll offer following options:

1. Fixed 11, 10, 8, 7, 6, 5
2. Variable 45 statistics points organized as you like but no more than 2 double digit
3. Roll 3 sets of stats and keep the best set.

Howdy all.

I'll go with the fixed statistics.

I'll be playing Elin Obdi, the scion of recently-disgraced minor nobility. In his youth, he was not designated the heir, and as such was shunted aside to university (I'll be finding out later how successful he was at this), and later became a physician (I'll also be finding out how this went as well).

So, probable shoo-in for Medic. :)

His story, so far, is that his family was for a long time in good standing--until his brother, the heir, was arrested for sedition and imprisoned without trial. Their relationship had been rocky, and Elin had always wished he hadn't been passed over, but Elin loves his brother.

So...when the King put the call out, Elin saw the chance to both reestablish his family's position (and perhaps save his brother), and jockey for his own position inside the family.

I'll very likely be our captain, since the useless bastard probably isn't much good for anything else. A noble as well, but (hopefully) not a disgraced one. Time, and dice rolls, will tell.

Character Generation

Howdy people!

I have a concept for a ship captain with an established history and skill set as a pirate, but we shall see what the dice have in store yes?

quote:
A genuine pirate captain, accustomed to moving in genuine pirate/criminal circles, and is of the more "professional" variety that seeks to make his piracy bloodless and attracting the minimum of attention and fuss.  Perhaps he is down on his luck and seeking a rebound with a new ship (Harrier!) ... but I also think there is potential here for genuinely buying into Olebs crazy idea of building a resurgent Kingdom.  A Pirate Kingdom.  And who knows, marrying the Princess and founding a noble line and all of that is nice dream if things work out.  But when do things ever go smooth?

I would see this character ideally as being competent as a leader/managing space combat, maybe ok but probably not great in personal combat, and particularly having the social ability and contacts to navigate the criminal world (especially as regards to pirates and the associated business of fencing cargo and gathering informants/intelligence about targets and the navy etc.)

It looks like I jump on the Engineering side of things. The plan is to play a former Naval Officer, but I will see what the character creator tells me I am playing. I love fixing things, and I use my Naval Career to leave my home life for more exciting pastures.

Also, I have never actually played in a Traveller game before. I have had the core book for a while now, but I never actually got to play in a game.

So I went to university to study astrogation and law, but decided to try my hand at being a rogue spacer. No pirate crew would touch me, so I was drafted into the star marines, where I got captured and suffered horribly. On receiving a medical discharge, I tried to persuade space pirates that I was a rough, tough veteran....and they still rejected me. I joined the crew of a scavenger ship, where somehow I wound up meeting a psionic institute and gaining a ship share, so clearly my latent talents led me to good luck. A dozen years as a psion left me talented, but also suffering from a disease that drained me further.

Can I spend my 9000 CR and take 1000 CR of medical debt to get 2 points of DEX back to replace the ones lost to injury?

Just submitted my benefit rolls to the GM for approval, so that's still up in the air, but here's what I've got as far as an actual character goes.

Ignatius Drenn, noble of high birth and a terrible congenital condition that makes him extremely allergic to work. Gambler, womanizer, playboy, charmer, scoundrel, rascal, rake. He can wield social skills like an ortillery piece, which should make him perfect for navigating Drinax's impenetrable high society.

He served two tours in the Scouts and two in the Navy, 'killed' in both and had to muster out.

As for Events and making them match up, I posted them up in my character rolls earlier, but I was a part of a Diplomatic Mission at some point, and I foiled a Sabatoge Attempt on one of the ships I served on. There were several life Events too, but the only one of note I can think of was the Ancient Technology one.

I think I could have met up with Benedict during that scrap on board the, let's call it the Horizon Guardian, a heavy corvette, where in the engineering bay, I had to rapidly repair a degrading j-drive while you had taken down the real threat, getting yourself injured pretty badly in the process.

Re: Character Generation

Precisely the opposite of Benedict, really. Failed to get into university, then nothing bad ever happened to him again. Granted, it's pretty hard to fail a Survival roll with a target of 3.

Iggy's highly specialized towards the social part of the equation, just lacking leadership ability. Which I may pick up through Connections, come to think of it. Would at least make a serviceable backup to El Capitan, and that +3 SOC makes even Leadership 1 fairly decent.

As for events, most of mine are fairly mild, since Noble doesn't lend towards much excitement.  Here's the list:

Term 1: Life Event, Improved Relationship: A romantic relationship involving you deepens, possibly leading to marriage or some other emotional commitment. Gain an Ally.

Term 2: Your reign is acclaimed by all as being fair and wise – or in the case of a dilettante, you sponge off your family’s wealth a while longer. Gain either a jealous relative or an unhappy subject as an Enemy. Gain DM+2 to your next Advancement check.

Term 3: You manipulate and charm your way through high society. Gain one level of Carouse, Diplomat, Persuade or Steward, as well as a Rival and an Ally.

Term 4: A conspiracy of nobles attempts to recruit you. If you refuse, gain the conspiracy as an Enemy. If you accept, roll Deception 8+ or Persuade 8+. If you fail, roll on the Mishap Table as the conspiracy collapses. If you succeed, Gain one level of Deception, Persuade, Tactics or Carouse.

Term 5: New Relationship: You become involved in a romantic relationship. Gain an Ally.

Term 6: A conspiracy of nobles attempts to recruit you. (Yep, this happened again.)

Term 7: You become deeply involved in politics on your world of residence, becoming a player in the political intrigues of government. Gain one level in Advocate, Admin, Diplomacy or Persuade, but also gain a Rival.

That diplomatic mission of yours, dragonrider, could be a possible connection, what with the Dukedom and all. Or perhaps one of those romantic entanglements was a relative of yours?

In reply to zagygthemad (msg # 32):

Well then, I think that the foil sabatoge still lines up decently enough with your Naval career.

I do like the Bad Romance lining up with your Duke stuff. I did start with a fairly high SOC rating, so it could have been your character telling him to square his shoulders and ignore her returning his focus to his Naval Career. Granted, seeing as he left for a better offer right after he made Captain, obviously he wasn't going to stick around to pull a pension when he had 1 last hurrah for glory, and to find romance on his terms.

Edit: So that would be Leadership 1 due to the Duke, and Engineering (j-drive) 1 due to Mr. Rapp.

I'll probably be grabbing Leadership from that Connection as well. Depending on what your end-result is, we may actually end up with the same DM for Leadership.

If the ship wasn't a loaner, I'd suggest an Owner/Captain partnership, but I unfortunately had to sacrifice my 1ΒΌ yachts in the name of game balance. Came out with 12 ship shares, though, so we're getting all those fittings replaced.

Re: Character Generation

Yep, thus Fozzy. The "financier", as it were, since Iggy technically won't own the Harrier, he'll just have dumped a mind-boggling amount of credits into it.

In all honesty, he wouldn't want to be in charge, but "Pirate Captain" would look nice on his lifetime achievement roll. I'm sure there's technically a term for a noble attached to a privateer without being its captain, because that sounds precisely like something one  of the major powers would have pulled during the Age of Sail.

Re: Character Generation

Khuevaengh's backstory, as self-narrated:

Term 0 (Pre-Career): "Rinvoengerrazodhae is a war-wracked mining colony where you can look forward to a life of drilling into rock and hoping that it doesn't kill you before the next revolt does."

Term 1 (Corsair/Reaver): "When one of the bands that frequents the place thinks you're a good prospect, you don't need to say 'yes'. They already knows it's your answer."

Term 2 (Merchant/Broker): "You can do all of the mercenary work, protection, and raiding you please, but you still need to move those goods when you're done."

Term 3 (Marine/Support): "I wasn't much of a salvage-peddler, so when the leaders started talking war, I had a new use for my skills. As it happened, the only real difference was the scenery: a lot less crawling through ducts and a lot more crawling through dirt."

Term 4 (Citizen/Worker): "Talented engineers are always in demand, and that's especially true after a war. Everyone needs to rebuild the things they just spent years blasting apart."

Term 5 (Loner/Hunter): "All that dirt-crawling was good training when it came time to lead paying customers out into the bush to shoot whatever they thought would look good when served on their dinner table or mounted on their wall."

Term 6 (Scientist/Technician): "They wanted to collect whole rather than in pieces, but the basic idea was the same. I learned just enough about the subject to know it was all way over my head, but as long as the ship's systems kept doing what they wanted, I kept getting paid."

Most of these terms were spent primarily in the Extents, though the last term was associated with the I.S.S. and therefore mostly within and sometimes beyond Imperium space.

That makes term 6 the most likely point of contact, though if someone had cause to visit the Extents earlier than that (or is from there, of course) then that could work too.

Re: Character Generation

It was deliberate: the character was originally done as an experiment in extreme vargr career-switching. (Their careers don't slap you with a qualification penalty for having previous ones, and there's far less of a cultural hangup about trying something new when you're bored with your current job.)

There *was* one failed qualification roll (resulting in the Loner term), but survival was never a problem.

Re: Character Generation

Since connections don't need to involve personal meetings, were any of your characters involved in mercenary, arms dealing, construction supply, etc, during terms 3-4? That could tie in to the events that he was involved in, even if it was at the other end of the supply chain.

Likewise, if anyone had a habit of chasing after odd creatures to hunt - or obscure archaeological sites to dig up - then term 5 would be an option.

And if anyone was up to illegal stuff even before that, well...

Since we're coming from all over the place, we've probably all been through places with varying tech levels, and Drinax itself is generally TL14 with mountains of TL15 heirlooms (even if it has trouble producing new ones).

It also isn't a campaign that's predicated on restricting PC access to things (it's full of Flash Gordon references for a reason), so my guess is that you're probably good up to TL 14-15 as long as you can afford it and it isn't a really crazy item (like a pocket nuke).
