The characters have spent the last couple years as players of Last Prophecy Online, a next-generation Augmented Reality phone game - a quite classic thing with goblins and wizards. Finally, at the end of 2025 the beta phase of the game will end, with the full release right around the corner.

Of course, come the eve of 2026 everything went exactly as planned for the players: the maintenance notices leading up to the end of the beta phase started sounding progressively creepier, until everything went straight to hell. Skittering things in the dark, progressively more dangerous creatures peeking from sewers and subways and rolling blackouts and failure of communication systems, progressively leading to the crumbling of normal social structures.

But we're getting ahead of ourselves: the game will start right on the midnight between 2025 and 2026 - give or take a timezone or twelve.
