[OOC] General chat 1

The Snootiest Dungeon Whale.(lore short)

1: "Y'all heard about our dungeon whale?"
2: "You talking about the one that wears the monicle and tophat?"
1: "Yeah, I know you whalers just got here, so I'll fill you in - That whale isn't just snooty. He is the snootiest dungeon whale ever discovered."
3: "What does that even mean? Snooty dungeon whales are known to be filthy rich in their rewards for completing their dungeons, so are you saying that he has the most lucrative dungeon?"
1: "Welll ... We don't know! The whale is just too damned snooty to take in any whalers or even to go seek someone worthy. It just swims there and hmphs at people while pretending to drink tea."
4: "That's not enough to give it tbe snooty, nor the snootiest title, what's going on?"
1: "You got it, but the whaling association has gotten records from the adventurers that have been clearing sunken wizard towers, and several towers have corroborated that the whale we have here is not only a snooty whale, but the snootiest of them all. You know that some towers have wierd hobbies, the tower the adventurers found records the dungeons and titles of all dungeon whales. Apparently, the last person to enter our whale was an undine woman, but she hasn't come out. The tower speculates that she's still clearing the trial at this time, and that's why the snootiest whale is extra snooty, perhaps he feels that he has found a worthy inheritor?"

"Ooooh...."

[OOC] General chat 1

Orc Chief and the Boyz (Lore Short)

The endless teal ocean shimmers under the blazing sun overhead. The gentle waves casting light like endless jewels. The sky is a clear endless blue, with no cloud in sight. The salty scent of sea and fish fills the humid air.

The sounds of helpless flailing and splashing approaches, filling the air with a cacophany of shouts and desperate struggle against the sea.

Hundreds of muscular, hulking green humanoids are thrashing around in the water in some misguided attempt one might call swimming. These are Orcs of the Very Big Stick tribe, on a journey towards glorious battle to venerate their god, Gorum.

These creatures dove into the sea and began their perilous journey over a month ago. They are helplessly lost.

The biggest, meanest, muscleist orc among them has his gaze filled with life or death determination. In fact, the entire tribe wears the same expression on their determined faces.

Then, the scrawniest orc, rather, a half orc shouts, "are...blub blub, are blub... we... there ...blub... yet?!"

The voice wakes the rest of the boyz out if their determined struggling-to-swim trance and cause them all to join in, making the struggling and splashing sound like a public market inside a swimming pool where everyone is drowning while haggling like vicious penny pinching grannies.

"Duhhh yeah... chief Biggest Stick, where is dah fight? I wanna clobber some of dem humies Gorum promised!"

"uhhhh... blub blub... chief... My big saber is thirsting for blood!"

"...BLUB..."

The orcs have stopped advancing and have fallen into a state of confusion with the half-orc's question. Smallest Twig has single-handedly saved many human lives this day.

Sure, just making sure everyone has clothes, you won't always be fighting. I always recommend picking up a kit or two.

Folding poles, pitons and hammers, rope, folding boat, etc, well, even a Kit, Diver's would be good https://www.d20pfsrd.com/equip...its/#TOC-Kit-Diver-s

Common adventuring goodies, a crowbar, etc.

Even chalk is good for marking the way.

Pitons are great for when you can't remove a door for whatever reason and think it might close behind you to force an encounter, you can hammer pitons down to prevent it from closing. Using a crowbar to remove the pins and pull the entire door off, or remove a door elsewhere to throw down to wedge a door open.

Block and tackle are great for making rope bridges, or pulling party members up and down in a make-shift elevator, or moving heavy goodies, or ripping off entire sections of wall, even using it to bind down huge critters. Maybe those statues you spot look extra suspicious, so you block them all down with rope and tackle, tightening them so they can't move if they actually are golems or other things.

That, or just using rope to haul up buddies that fall into a pit.

Scratch head at Tidale Stromgurd.

Unless you have a very very bad str. Have done something very odd with your character?
You should have a swim skill of at least 12 with just one skill point.
With swim movement of 30ft base and able to take 10 any time.

So you should be able to swim in any condition you like. Skill of 22.

Re: [OOC] General chat 1

Ok

Base Speed: Undines have a base speed of 30 feet on land. They also have a swim speed of 30 feet, can move in water without making Swim checks, and always treat Swim as a class skill.

So you have 3 skill points. Swimming is class skill so that 3 more. 1 more for strength.
As you have swim speed you get +8 race bonus and can always take 10.

So swim speed 30 ft Skill of 15 and you can take 10 unless you really really upset the GM.

So you swim with the class and skill of a professional gymnast that just walking down the street.
Does that help?

Little cat character look relived that the fish character is now fast enough and skilled enough not to become his next meal (Whitepaw love fishes, nice fishes). That would have been embarrassing.

Oh str is only 11 darn str penalty from race... and +2 from Aquatic Combatant feat.

I am strong with D&D but fairly new to Pathfinder.

I'm figuring +8+(race mod)-4(if geared for war) so far.

I'll get a diving suit and divers kit but with candles instead of chalk. Chalk dissolves in water, wax stays on what you wipe it on and works about the same. I'm also going to look into a bouy-lamp (ever burning torch in box form that weights or floats can be easily affixed to to keep it at the height one might want under water) if GM is cool with that.

Roles. You should discuss your roles and formation. We have multiple magic users, but you may be stepping on each other's toes in some areas and not have a chance to have as much fun or chances to shine.

It's okay to coordinate skills - remember that retraining is a thing, so a party may all go through retraining to cover their bases and maximise their collective number of skills.

I make challenges on the fly based on your skills, and try to give every character a chance to shine.

For instance, Profession: Enigmatologist or Knowledge Enigmatology can be rolled to crack puzzles and riddles.

Knowledge Engineering can help resolve mechanical puzzles.

There are seven of you.

Okay so we CAN discuss. Lets throw down then….
Dove rolled bad. 7 Str, 6 Wis bad.
She’s got A decent variety of skills but nothing extreme (UMD, K: Arcana, Diplomacy, Bluff, Intimidate, etc).
Unicorn Bloodline; Tattooed archetype. Hence why she’s a secondary healer.
She has evocation specialist feats (spell focus and mages tattoo), traded bonus human feat for skill focus feats and picked up Phoenix bloodline (Can identify 4/day as a spelllike action!).

Spells (not including cantrips) are
Cure Light Wounds, Keep Watch, Mage Armor and Magic Missile. Also Burning Arc.
Tempted to swap Keep Watch for Alarm though for better synergy. Oh and packing a few Ioun Stones and Wands (Cure Light Wounds, possibly Create Water and Jump too).

Dove Lenari:
I took the Keep Watch spell not sure if anyone else is aiming for specific survival items as suggested.

I plan on taking Web Shelter and/or Campfire Wall as one of my level 2's if the situation calls for it (web shelter is also water-tight so it can be used in specific cases underwater). Otherwise I don't have any form of safeguard spells for the camp.

Whitepaws:
Saluril, do you have either Detect Poison or Purify Food and Drink?

My spells will mostly be guesswork based on our current situation but at present he just has 3 guidance and 1 light. That's a placeholder tho, as if we need to go on a long trek I'd use prep day to cast all my level 1's as goodberry and then I'd have purify and/or create water on travel days. Saluril is very cooperative when it comes to survival and would be willing to prepare his spells with or in coordination with others to maximize his utility.

GM Karuoun:
Roles. You should discuss your roles and formation.

I'm going to be a bit of an anchor for the party for a bit, unless it comes to dealing with animals/nature. My subclass yoinked my Wild Shape in favor of a beefy shark form at level 6. I can do temporary partial transformations to get swim speed/breathe water as needed or I can use it for combat purposes if swimming isn't the focus of that encounter.

He's got 13 Strength, 20 Wisdom and the rest is 10 or 11, so Saluril isn't anything to write home about just yet. His feats are focused on survival, with dodge and improved initiative to start (casters gotta go fast) and he'll be caster focused with Wild Shape for survival benefits later down the line.

Wild Empathy is my jam, with the ability to get an extra +4 and Full-round action it with aquatic critters. I can also speak with animals at will, regardless if they are aquatic or not. My spells will largely be utility spells such as Guidance, Bark Skin, etc. with things like Faerie Fire, Air Bubble, Web Shelter, etc depending on what we might need that day. I won't be blasting things but I will probably devote a slot or two to Nauseating Dart to rob something nasty out of it's actions (if they fail the save, anyways).

Big Skills are handle animal, heal, perception and survival. No healer's kit but I do have an antidote kit for poison treatment. I have a cooking kit, 3 canteens (in case someone loses a waterskin), 3 ioun torches (in case y'all somehow lose yours) and a scroll box in case anyone needs a water-tight place to store their scrolls so long as they don't mind them smelling like aged cheese and cured meats (he stores sliced meats and cheeses in there...for reasons).

Re: [OOC] General chat 1

Ah, late to the party.

Mrauow's pretty limited spell wise (Crossblooded and multiclassed); he can only cast a total of five spells, including Magic Missile and Acid Splash/Blue Dragon Loogie. That said, he's got a handy d6 of sneak attack and, for all intents and purposes, Quickened Vanish five times per day - BDL ends up doing 1d3+1d6+3.

Skills. There are a few Mrauow has to keep (Arcana, Escape Artist, and Disable device) and a few he's pretty decent/amaze-sauce at (Acrobatics, Stealth). Other than those, he's got Perception (none too shabby despite a Wis penalty, and there's never enough perception). Given how many spellcasters there are and how low a priority Str was, I can probably divert out of Spellcraft and Climb into, say, a knowledge that we don't have covered, Sleight of Hand, or other. Given the high concentration of diverse casters and comparatively low level, UMD is an option but not high on the list of priorities from my point of view - I can take it if that is the party consensus.

Gear wise, it seems like healing and poison handling is mostly sorted. I was considering picking up a Saline Purge but that might be redundant as of now; might still go in for some Venombane Lozenges just in case. Strongly considering a Spell Lattice - either way there's a lot of potential party use for such an object with so many spontaneous casters. Picked up an Ioun Torch, though that actually might be redundant. Pretty much stumped on gear, though I did find a kickass magical storage option in the form of a Versatile Vest.

Also, are custom items allowed? For example, a party 'face' might want a bangle that casts Tap Inner Beauty at-will, and per creation formula this would cost 4000 gp. Or an Amulet that grants +1 Ability for 1000 gp (per formula)?

I think there are also Magic belts and headbands that bring subpar ability scores up to 10, but I cannot recall what they are called.

The character sheets you provided say Traits/Drawbacks. Are Drawbacks an option?

Custom magic items are only allowed if I think they are cool, fun, and interesting.

Attribute enhancing items generally don't exist under automatic bonus progression.

Drawbacks can be taken, but they don't grant additional traits.

Also, for spells

I believe items are either sized for the character or sized for the task.

A crowbar needs a certain size to function correctly, and is sized for the task. Armor needs to be a certain size to function correctly, and is sized for the character.

If you are doing it yourself:
http://legacy.aonprd.com/coreR...a-wizard-s-spellbook

Writing a spell to a Spellbook
Once a wizard understands a new spell, he can record it into his spellbook.

Time: The process takes 1 hour per spell level. Cantrips (0 levels spells) take 30 minutes to record.

Space in the Spellbook: A spell takes up one page of the spellbook per spell level. Even a 0-level spell (cantrip) takes one page. A spellbook has 100 pages.

Materials and Costs: The cost for writing a new spell into a spellbook depends on the level of the spell, as noted on the following table. Note that a wizard does not have to pay these costs in time or gold for spells he gains for free at each new level.

Spell LevelWriting Cost
05 gp
110 gp
240 gp
390 gp
4160 gp
5250 gp
6360 gp
7490 gp
8640 gp
9810 gp

Maybe I'm just using too much reason but I think that a book of spells written by someone else is simply a collection of scrolls to anyone other than the wizard who wrote it. Now if you gain an ability that lets you have a spellbook of your own to utilize then you can write other spells as you understand them. You may understand them because of a spellcraft check and seeing it cast repeatedly, or because you figured out how to understand somebody else's writing via scroll. I would argue though that the spell isn't yours until you have figured it out yourself so a spell book written by someone else is a collection of scrolls waiting for you to figure out and transcribe yourself into your own spell book.

That's just me doing logic and reasoning not any kind of authority on Pathfinder mechanics.

So mechanic wise I'm pretty sure that's not how it works, since scrolls are charged and by using them you destroy them. And I believe that includes to memorizing from them.

Thematic wise? I *love* The idea of a mage with a spellbook of scrolls and in oh shit situations they literally burn out the spell from their spellbook to cast it one final time. I totally may have to steal that with the Cypher Mage PRC in a future game.

It's close.

Scrolls contain empowered and cast spells waiting to simply be released.

Spellbooks contain the entire spell unprepared and the ritual preparation method. The wizard uses his tools alongside the spellbook and a preparation ritual to have the spell in the book begin etching the empowered magic framework into his mind. Wizards don't have innate magic beyond a normal person's, unlike sorcerers. So they use the magic spell and ritual in the magic spellbook that they have learned to forge a magic inside themselves, aka memorization. Once they have cast the spell, that magic is gone and they have to prepare again another time.

Wizards leveling up to higher spell levels is essentially them not only understanding higher tier spells, but also compression techniques that lets them hold those spells with the same amount of innate magic (A normal person's).

Wizards have to learn the spells for themselves because every wizard is different in body and mind, so the forces and magics don't always react the same way.

Prepared casters, like wizards, have a special preparation ritual recorded in the spellbook. This is what takes the hour of preparation time, performing this ritual while studying the spellbook embeds the magics into the caster, waiting for just a flick of a wrist and a word to unleash his might.

I'm thinking about starting the adventure on a semi-sunken island turtle - the depth to the land on the turtle's back is around 10ft at the shallowest areas, with ruins of cities half submerged, so buildings would be half underwater and half above. The plot hook being that your boat got snatched by a gargantuan kleptocrab that is hiding somewhere on the island turtle during the day while you were all exploring the depths of a sunken palace.

The mission was taken up by all of you due to your sea abilities, so you met and made aquaintances before being loaned a boat by the anthropological association of wizard towers.

This association of sentient flying buildings of mass destruction is deeply interested in anthropology and archeology and has put up a scaling reward for uncovering documents, cataloging finds, recovering historical artifacts and finding details about the people that lived here, also determining how long ago the civilization existed.

Saluril is the not-so-strong and silent type (whopping 13 strength and 15 when his eyes turn black! woo!). He is usually just...there. He helps when asked, doesn't complain (unless something is sadistic/pointless) and he is direct when his input is requested. He is also very wary of pretty much everyone for *fires confetti cannon* tragic backstory reasons.

Re: [OOC] General chat 1

Dove has.... no tragedy in her background. In fact her childhood/life was so amazing it's only due to her low wisdom she left it to become an adventurer, eyes full of bigger then life dreams rather then reality. She comes from an adventurer 'family' which includes way too many aunts and uncles, a dozen orphaned 'siblings', and had several experiences which even high level adventurers would doubt...

Such as riding on a Unicorn (Her mother's mount) and Watching a phoenix hatch.

But she wants to be the star of her own tales and as such she's out here now, adventuring. Thankfully she's quite good at ignoring 'bad situations' and forgetting about the trauma of near death nigh instantly. Also, of setting things on fire that upset her. Perky, upbeat, and unrealistic. But she's got an innocent air of joy that's hard to want to crush.

"Trauma? Pft, whats that. Life risking adventure? YES! Sounds neat! Supplies? Oh my family packed my bag before I left home; I'm sure I've got something. Now let's go do something amaaazing. "

Oh that's super useful, I have no idea how it works. Whats it from? I know I considered Silent Spell for emergencies but wasn't sure if it was necessary or just helpful under water (i mean you can technically talk, probably just doesn't help for holding breath)

So I think I found something that's pretty much always going to be a pre-req for higher level spontaneous jeez. Good call!

Edit: Question for GM

The party discovers that the inside of the palace is only half submerged. The towering columns hold the cavernous entry hall's roof fifty feet above the floor.

This means swimming up there's an air pocket yes?

Yes, the room is fifty feet tall, 25ft is under water, while the rest of the way up is air.

Edit: spellcasting under water

Spellcasting Underwater: Casting spells while submerged can be difficult for those who cannot breathe underwater. A creature that cannot breathe water must make a concentration check (DC 15 + spell level) to cast a spell underwater (this is in addition to the caster level check to successfully cast a fire spell underwater). Creatures that can breathe water are unaffected and can cast spells normally. Some spells might function differently underwater, subject to GM discretion.

Actions v spells: seems okay, let's keep it on review though please. As a partial caster it seems right. Full casters may find abuses.

Asto the thug: My thug found his place as a 'monater of a man. After all he could kill ogres, giants, demons, and even specters with his hands. The party did well and the players threw a lot of snacks across tables for about three years.

Civilization began to crumble apart as more and more young adventurers modeled themselves after us and stopped being on call and standby to answer the needs of towns and we played another game in a dystopian future of THAT world run by a different guy in the group where my thug was worshiped as an Ascended Demon God and the rest of the party had Tribal kingdoms modeled after their ideals... and all our characters for that were just trying to survive as members of the last city to be wiped of the planet by The Wild.

It is a good burn vs sustain thought honestly though the idea of Dove pumping out 9d4+12 in a single round is pretty scary. Thankfully this is why she carries a crossbow. I'm interested to see how it works but I'd probably suggest curbing it to a maximum of 2 a round though. Gives a bit more potential oomph without three spelling in a single round (We also have to defend against this potentially, so I feel this is a solid limit).

.... It also still makes taking Quicken Spell a viable feat/metamagic wand in the future.

Anyway that's my input. Hope it helps!

My issue of mind is "paralyze/grapple a target until the beginning of your next turn" and knowing what the stunned status does to saves. Even being a Paladin, immune to fear and saves in general being better than anyone else's... The player is afraid of those implications. Sometimes a spell is meant to set up for teammates not oh, disintegrate someone because they failed their first save that round and now don't get a save to avoid death.

Three concentration checks to cast 3 spells in a round you get smacked...

I stand by mostly valid. Completely valid comes if we say that rapid spells can't take advantages of penalties inflicted on the same character's turn because any defenses were already initiated.

If the slab monster is evil and not a horde then that will be a Smite rather than a slash. Because +4 to hit and damage with another possible +4 damage all ignoring DR and getting +4 to AC(20base) until it dies makes a paladin a damn nightmare to evil creatures.

Each floor block is an evil stone golem. Each floor block is 2.5 × 2.5 x 2.5 ft, meaning there are around one million evil stone floor block golems in this level.

Why are there so many and what are they protecting. And, more importantly, who or what are they protecting it from?

We can deduce that the target definitely moves across the floor due to the methodical placement of the blocks and the probably deeply involved rituals that may have been needed.

The party is probably not the target, as Greb has noticed haphazard traps on the ceiling, sort of an afterthought by the denizens that prepared this arrangement.

Why didn't such a capable being or group take the treasure with them? Or, could it be bait for their trap?

And now everyone knows a little better why we don't have pictures. LOL. A lot of artwork has difficulty taking the aquatic creatures and giving them short hair, as though they're offended by not having flowing locks on a creature that comes out from the water. I mean how often do Olympic swimmers let long hair flow? Is there not a reason behind this... Oh well it's not like heavy armor on aquatic creatures isn't its own issue.

*twiddles thumbs*

You know that in game time you all have spent less than a minute at the building.

If you are concerned, you can take out a rowboat from the yacht and make camp outside the building to monitor the area for a while, or go into downtime. Or experiment. There are a lot of options available, you don't have to be laser focused on this area. Remember your mission, research the area and collect artifacts.

I'd say that flower is a great find. You can turn it in at the yacht for 500 exp.

Edit 2: as this is a research mission, there is no need to put yourself in harms way. However, there are all sorts of baddies to clobber if you want to pummel mooks

I feel like wanting to explore the area, maybe more for the literally 20000 golems in the way. But I guess since we aren't paid to do that and Tidale is seeing himself more on the cartographer and guard side then he might suggest a different area for the time being.

I'll post to that effect in the next while.

Re: [OOC] General chat 1

Resolution of protective effects rolling order for this game:

1: Blink
2: Mirror Image
3: Blur
4: Displacement

So, if an enemy attacked you and you have all of these affects, they'd first roll 50% for blink, then percentile for images, then 20% for blur, then 50% for displacement

That's for the party. Should a monster choose to cast all of that, they would just use a 50% miss chance and percentile for images.

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/gamema...ined-action-economy/

Unchained action economy, it's linked at the bottom of the player guide, along with other rules subsystems in use

quote:
Home >Gamemastering >Other Rule Systems >Unchained Rules >

Unchained Action Economy

The default action economy is intricate—full of exceptions, nonactions, and strange actions. This revised action economy streamlines the process of combat encounters. In many ways, it’s a more active system that allows lower-level characters more options in a round while slightly limiting how much higher-level characters can do during their turns.
In this system, a character can commit up to 3 acts on her turn; these can be committed individually as simple actions, or combined into advanced actions. When it’s not her turn, a character can take a single reaction per round. Iterative attacks have been discarded in this action economy. Instead, any character can make multiple attacks during her turn simply by taking multiple actions to do so.

Re: [OOC] General chat 1

Quick refresher, the distant light is the place the party is trying to reach. They can always return by turning around. The place they entered is right behind them after all, much how a shadow can be long in one direction and short in another. It may have taken a day of travel to get here, but would only take fifteen minutes to leave.

Re: [OOC] General chat 1

If you are ever wondering if you will be in a place for too long, look at the story arc. I DM in threes. The rule of three if you will.

So, three locations, three encounters, three escalations etc.

Rather, i try to wrap up story threads in three steps, introduction, escalation, and conclusion. Three of these together makes an Arc.

Three arcs makes an adventure.

I also like to keep combat to around three rounds or less. Mostly prefer one round, let you clobber baddies senseless. This is because combat rounds on here take up a week, so four rounds would be an entire month on a few seconds of combat. Eeeeeeeeeek

If Tidale figures that out then he may be more liberal with his Smite in the future.

Re: [OOC] General chat 1

I've been inverted schedule the past few days. It isn't pleasant but when we have no better choices we do as we must.

Re: [OOC] General chat 1

I think I'm going to bow out of this game, I had a lot of fun and wish you the best but at this point it's just really hard to get into character and be motivated to post as Dove. Please forgive me and I wish you all the best.

Re: [OOC] General chat 1

I'm going to put this game on ice, my heart isn't in it and hasn't been for months.

The lack of kleptocrabs has left me devastated 💔
