Valaric draws his katana as he enters the stables looking into the gloom to see what lay in wait.

" The name is Valaric, I wield a sword well for one of my age. I look forward to venturing with you all."

You hear skittering in the dark.

" Whatever is in here is capable of taking down a man, there is a dead stable hand in one of the stalls."

Continuing to advance slowly, wanting to make his way to the dead body. Taking it slow so others might join him if they are inclined.

Lucia heard what the swordsman said about the body as she entered the stables and cast a spell which enveloped herself with a shimmering field.  "Litrix di wer Suiaerl"

Stepping to one side of the entrance, she prepared for things to get nasty.

Tappis took a look around the room for signs of the rodents as well as signs of a ladder or something similar that he could climb onto. "Valaric, I'll see if I can find some high ground to spot the target. I'll either join you, or make use of the vantage point, depending on what I see."

Glorandal says, "Hey, there's a dead stable hand over here!" as he rushes over to the dead man and inspects his body for cause of death and anything else he can figure out.

Geoffrey enters the stables through a continuation of his sneaking. He flattens himself on the wall to slowly and sneakily get inside, his blade loudly grinding or scraping on the ground. He waits sneakily for the rats to move.

Tappis watched the rats make their move, and waited for the shot to open up before releasing an arrow from his shortbow.

Staying against the wall by the door, Lucia made a gesture with her right hand and shouted, "Ixen Bluthel!"  A fiery red beam of magical energy flew out of her outstretched hand towards the closest rodent.

A second rat shrieks it's death cry as flames leap from a sword to devour it.

Glorandal makes a quick motion with his arms and hands, thrusting his fingers towards the rat that tried to bite him, "Pilin anqualë!" he shouts as three flashes of light burst from his hand striking the rat.

Geoffrey sticks out of the wall,"Ha, those vermin didn't stood a chance against you lot. Heh, they didn't get to even face me or see that I was here the whole time." he says chuckling to himself, then looks at the oversize rodents,"Do you think this is all of them?"

Glorandal looks around in the gloom, checking each stall. "I don't think there any more. Do we need to take proof? Maybe the tails?" He says motioning to the dead rats.

Lucia shook her head as she approached the others, "I agree we need to take the corpses, but first we should make sure we are done.  Where did the rats come from?  They were not obvious when we first arrived here, so maybe they have a tunnel or bolt hole."

Working her way out from the rat corpses, Lucia will search for clues to find where the rats came from.

Four more rats peek their snouts out from a stack of hay bales at the sound of the party and move to attack.

Tappis watched and waited for one of the rats to get near to any one of his companions, keeping the bow trained along their paths. As it stepped close, attention on another, he loosed the arrow.

Geoffrey finishes up his flute session, breaking the twig in the process. He then looks toward the remaining rats,"Huh, looks like a few more still live. Don't worry about it, cause now I'm joining the fray." he says, then grabs his big sword and delivers a downward arc towards the rat, cutting it down.

With the rats seemingly eliminated, Tappis went about looking through the stables for any useful information, reasons why the rats were here, or anything valuable or otherwise out of the ordinary.

Valaric wanders around the stable looking for any signs of how these rats got in here besides the obvious doors. Also looking for any rat nests which might need to be searched.

Geoffrey wipes the blood off his blade and looks at the others that are searching for more rats,"I don't think their are any more of these giant vermin. Unless theirs a king or queen rat, but I doubt it."

Glorandal searches with the others for a nest or entry of some kind for the vermin.

Lucia joined in on searching the stables for clues with the others.  She was a little rattled by her first discovery of the four additional rats but continued on with the search none-the-less.

In the corner, partially obscured by haybales is a five foot wide crack.

Valaric works on clearing the hay bales out of the way. Once clear he will see what he can see through the cracks. Devil's sight.

Once the hay bales are clear, a crack that seems to widen to five feet high and about as wide is visible in the side of the hill the stable is backed up to.

"Yep... That looks like a rat hole made by Rodents of Unusual Size.  Anyone object to magical light sources?" Lucia asked as she looked around for small stones or small pieces of wood from the broken wall.

OOC: if she finds some she'll pick up about a dozen pebbles or the like and put them in her pockets.

Glorandal tests the edges of the crack with his quarterstaff, tapping here and there. "You'll have no argument from me." He says to Lucia, "I was just about to fashion and light a torch myself."

He peers as far into the crack as he can.

Tappis shook his head at Lucia, "As you wish."

Valaric looks around at everyone before speaking, " I would like to suggest that we block the opening for now, return with the proof of rat elimination. Get our reward for this task, then explain about the Crack and barter for our reward for that task."

Looks at the others for thier reactions.

Geoffrey nods his head a bunch of times, signifying his agreement to the swordsman,"Or, counterargument here, how about we smash this wall in it's entirety so the rats will never hide in this stable ever again." he says, waiting to see what the others think,"I'm sure the owner would agree with that arrangement." so Geoffrey says.

Lucia blinked a few times trying to parse out what the muscle-bound man was saying.  "If you are suggesting trying to block up the rat tunnel , that might work in the short term, but the rats could just dig a new tunnel; perhaps into someone's root cellar and an entire family might be killed by the rats next.  If you mean to bring down the stable wall, that won't stop the rats at all and could very likely bring down the stables; something the owner definitely won't like."

Turning to the man with the sword she stated, "If we are going to present ourselves as a cohesive group, we really aught to know at least each others' names.  I am Lucia Bardakci; glassblower and mage."

Glorandal gives the large man a bemused look. "As logical as that reasoning is, Lucia was it? She makes a good point. I would also prefer not to bring this entire stable down about our ears." he says, gesturing around the building.

"I agree. We need to nip this in the bud sooner rather than later." Then turning towards everyone and motioning to himself, "I am Glorandal, wandering wonderer and seeker of knowledge. Despite the circumstance, it's a pleasure to meet you all."

Geoffrey crosses his arms up as the others didn't agree with his,"Well, you never know, it could work. It might smash true the rat king or something" he grumbles and seeing as everyone's introducing themselves, Geoffrey does so too,"I am Geoffrey, I was once many things, nobleman, lover, slave, gladiator and now pest control." he says, staring at the rathole,"So what do we do with this crack, should we leave it to the owner or do something else with it?"

"Call me Tappis, just a simple horse trader. I think we should leave the thing as it is for now. We were paid to take care of the vermin, and no more. If we take the rats back, get our money, then we can negotiate a price for investigating further, or for sealing it shut, whichever he feels more inclined to expense."

"Valaric, I say we block the hole temporarily while we collect our reward. Then we inform him of the new threat and negotiate a fair reward before we investigate further. Our original task is completed so we have earned our pay."

"Alright, guess I'll plug the hole so we can get paid." Geoffrey says, grabbing some hay a horse was chewing. He started collecting a bunch of hay that's about the size of the hole and plugs it,"You said temporary right, then this is a very temporary measure. Hah, let's get paid."

As you are walking with the rats in tow; a man starts yelling at Valaric.

"Ritan! Ritan!"

Two men in blue and green leathers bearing clubs round the corner.

"Where?! Where is the ritan?" one bellows.

The man points at Valaric.

Lucia asked sternly, "Who or What is a ritan?" She was beginning to regret not eating supper again as the start of a headache was growing.

"Not again! This is the third time this month you've cursed at rat-killers."
One of the guards says as he grabs the madman.
"A Ritan is an animal killer; usually of livestock, maybe of familiars."

"Well now this is just a simple misunderstanding. You see, we found a bunch of rats and thought... Wait a second." Geoffrey says, and looks at the man closely,"Oh, this man could be the rat king in disguise. He could be looking for revenge." he says, pointing to the crazed madman dramatically.

Valaric looks to the guards, "We were just tasked with ridding the stables of some vermin, we were just returning with proof for our reward. Since you are here though we did find a dead stablehand inside, if you care to retrieve the body and do any reports or notification to the family."

Glorandal smirks at Geoffrey's insinuation, but then again even if the man wasn't the rat king himself, why would he be shouting at us for killing a few rats?

While Valeric is talking to the guards about the dead stable hand, Glorandal examines the man that had been shouting "Ritan"

Lucia gave the man raving about animal killers a critical look to see if Geoffrey's claim could be true.  She thought it more likely that the man was responsible for the giant rats coming back, not that he was a giant rat in disguise.

"Oh no, Jerron is going to be most unhappy. This is the fifth stablehand he lost this year. Shame, I think he and Roxhalia were trying for a relationship of some kind."

Glorandal's ears perk at this. "He's lost six stablehands in a year? Have they all been killed by rats?" he asks the guard incredulously.

"No, some have left to join the fight in the Ludovic Border Wars the last one got killed in a goblin raid on the Rushenko caravan when he was picking up horses." The Guard said as he counted out ten copper pieces.

"Here, going rate for rat bounties in the city. feel free to collect from Jerron too."

Geoffrey grabs the copper pieces and so he starts counting them and the group too,"Uh, that's 8 and a 4 which divides to... Ugh, all of you just take 2 coppers." he says and passes two pieces to the group. Geoffrey then turns at the guard,"So where do we find this Jerron?"

"Jerron is the innkeep, he might be in the Whispering Dragon. Spending some time trying to coax another night out of Erroth's latest customers."

"Erroth! His name sprouts out yet again. Just who is this person called Erroth Venni?" Geoffrey asked the question of the day to the guard.

"Thank you very much, sir.  Are giant rats a common infestation here?" Lucia asked the guard.

She accepted the two copper coins from Geoffrey and told him, "Erroth is a bard here in town."

"Erroth is, depending on who you ask an menace or a savior." the Guard took a breath.
"Most passerby loose coin to him; however, many of the locals have been saved by him investing in a business or helping them to stay afloat in times of need."

"I'm not certain I like where I stand on that spectrum." Glorandal says, hefting one of the rats and accepting the 2 coppers from Geoffrey. "Let us get these rats to Erroth so we can get to the bottom of this.", then turns to head towards the Whispering Dragon.

"Right after we get it to the innkeeper of course, we get paid more and then get an explanation." Geoffrey says, grabbing a bunch of dead rats and follows Glorandal to the inn.

The stables, now vacant of horses seem eerie and large. You can see to the haybales and there are four rats gathered around sniffing for something.

Valaric draws his sword with his right hand,while mumbling under his breath. Then he directs his left palm towards the rats.A blast of force flies towards the rats.

As the group walks towards their destination Glimmersteel continues to talk while he takes of his hat and pulls some small leather strips out of his pocket. He stuffs them into the bells and then puts the hat back on his head. The small bells have been silenced. He too trails off his idle conversation as he senses they are reaching their destination.

A change comes over the small man and he peers forward attentively making not a sound. The entertainer is gone now replaced by a shadow. He waits for those he has just joined to make the first move and Valaric does so. Glimmersteel remains motionless waiting to see what follows.

Lucia wasn't at all surprised that there were more rats to kill, but she was surprised that they were out during the day time.  Although, the stables were a bit dark.  She gestured to one of the rats and called out, "Ixen Bluthel!", but was fairly certain she had missed.

As the varied adventurers-turned-exterminators contended with the rats, they'd soon find it wasn't just vermin that scuttled about in the shadows of the stables.  No sooner had that one particular unwell, green-tinged Giant Rat pounced past Glimmersteel than it was abruptly pounced itself!  By something a lot more green, to boot!

A flash of movement from out of sight as a shaggy mass of bristled green hair and bestial shrieking dove in all at once.  It set upon the Giant Rat with the same ferocity as a wild animal, but the control of a hunter - a weapon brought down on the vermin's skull with a dull, painful whud! of blunt impact dealt by the pommel of a blade rather than its keen edge.  Glimmersteel himself had a front row view of luminous slitted eyes that rose swiftly to meet his gaze, glowing bright in the gloom of the stables, before their owner opened wide a maw filled with too many fangs and let out another feral shriek to try and ward him away.

Not another rat, but something worse!  A Goblin!

If that's not enough damage to KO the Giant Rat, Wastrel will make an off-hand attack with her Dagger to try and finish the job.

The goblin came out of nowhere and Glimmersteel suddenly found himself staring down the toothy maw of a green skinned humanoid. It hissed and growled at him.

Glimmersteel made no move, neither in retreat or advance, but assumed a ready stance with dagger hand in the front pointing directly at the goblin while the fingers of his left curled up ready for a palm strike.

"I thank you for eating that rat. I must advise you that you are considerably outnumbered should you wish to dine again."

Lucia softly said, "I think that's the goblin that been seen wandering around in town.  My fellow merchants told me about her.  She's known for going through garbage and hunting down vermin.  Some have taken to calling her Wastrel, but I very much doubt that's her real name." She was also looking around to see if any more giants rats were around.

"Wastrel is it?" Glimmersteel address the goblin. "You seem to have acquired some celebrity in this small community. I am Glimmersteel Pommelguard, we are hunting rats."

Geoffrey readies his blade at the appearance of the goblin but rests his hand seeing that everyone else isn't hostile to him,"Well it's best to have more people to join up, great to meet you little gremlins lady. The names Geoffrey, man made of muscle and fighting power."

You see beady little eyes staring out from behind the haybale.

"Get ready for the next wave of rats." Lucia said, pointing to some hay bales.  Taking a deep breath, she waited for the rats to appear so she had a better shot.

Valaric again mumbles under his breath and directs his left palm at the visible eyes at the haybale. A burst of force streams to the haybale and possible rat.

Since eyes were visible I can target, just harder to hit. figure with force could also knock bale out of the way too.

Direct conversation toward the Goblin seemed to be about as effective as chattering at a stray cat from the looks of her reactions.  Though there was flickering recognition in her expression when her so-called name was mentioned a few times where her gaze would dart to whoever said it, she remained bristled and snarling overall.  Too big a crowd, too many weapons, too much danger... but she wasn't lashing out at anyone, so they had that going for them.

When more rats began to appear, Wastrel quickly hoisted up the slumped-over body of the sickly Giant Rat she'd clubbed into submission and slung it over her shoulders.  Rather than stay and fight, she took off!  A swift scamper on all fours across the hay-strewn floor past the gathered folk, carrying her prey away for whatever mysterious purpose.

Wastrel's going to scurry off and climb to some safer point in the stables to stow the unconscious Giant Rat out of harm's way.  She'll use her Bonus Action to Disengage if necessary.

Surprised at the sudden appearance of the goblin Glorandal started a bit. The others were speaking to it, but he knew it probably didn't understand. He stayed back and watched 'Wastrel', a strange name for a Goblin he thought, as she ran off with the rat. Most likely to go 'enjoy' her breakfast in peace. He didn't have much time to reflect on this as the commotion of Valaric's force attack against the hay bales drew his attention.

Glorandal turns towards the hay bales and gets ready for what comes next.

Valarie sends the bale of hay spinning away from the wall and crushes the rat.

"Hmm, looks like that's all of them. Alright, let's start finding that queen shall we." Geoffrey says, wiping the blood off his blade as Valaric slays the last rat,"Though I guess their could be more rats hiding around hay bales and whatnot."

Up in the loft, Wastrel watched the others for a lingering moment while she slung the limp Giant Rat down at her feet with a thud.  Nimble, wickedly clawed fingers set to tying the beast up with a length of rope spun from under her shawl, quick to bind its legs together and its head back so that it couldn't twist around and chew its way free.  Once she was sure it was secured, the Goblin reached up alongside her temple; amid all that bristly green chaos she called hair were various bits of debris woven throughout.  Bits of string, beads, twigs, and even a little length of ivy that had small berries sprouted along its length.

One such berry was plucked free and pulped between her fingers before she squeezed its juices into the Giant Rat's mouth.  She watched and waited, eyes narrowed intensely for the beast to return from its forced slumber.  Down below the others could hear more chittering and hissing like another large rat... only for it to seem to be Wastrel herself, clicking her tongue sharply through her fangs in a rather remarkable emulation. 

After tying it up, Wastrel will cast Goodberry and feed one to the Giant Rat, restoring it to 1 HP and consciousness.

Glimmersteel looks over at Geoffrey and nods, "I find myself in agreement. The task seems to be stopping this infestation and killing the queen would accomplish that. Shall we move out then?"

He then looks up into the loft where Wastrel took the subdued rat. "Do you think they're mating? I'm not going up there, some things can't be unseen."

Glorandal nods to Glim and Geoffrey. "I agree. The sooner we kill the queen, the sooner we can get out of here." he says ignoring Glim's comment about goblin mating habits and walking over to peer into the crack, trying not to step in the blood of the smashed rat under the hay bales.

"Nah, I don't think they have an intimate relationship like that. But their definitely starting slow with first contact." Geoffrey replies to Glim's comment,"And boy, does she got it down with those smooth moves." he says, giving a whistle while he looks toward the loft.

Lucia cringed at what the others were saying and the strange sounds coming from the loft.  She refused to look up.  "Anyways... lets continue on, shall we gentlemen?"

Thinking about it, she decided she had better armor up, since they had no idea when and how they might be attacked down in the tunnels.  With a firmly chanted "Litrix di wer Suiaerl", she was surrounded by her magical armor.

OOC: She casts Mage Armor on herself.

Glimmersteel chuckles and slaps Geoffrey on the back. "We're gonna get along," he says as he moves forward with the others.

Before departing Geoffrey's side he cants his head sideways and continues their joke, "Can you imagine the offspring. Oh you look like your father...or is it your mother...can't tell."

Geoffrey rubs his chin in thought,"Well, to be honest my friend, I think their offspring would look similar to our little Fair Green Lady, only it'd be more hairy and have a tail but I can see the resemblance in my mind already." he chuckles as he marches forward with the others.

Nearing the Crack, you see that it is a bit of a squeeze  for a few feet before opening up into a presumably natural cavern. Off in one corner you see fungi that seem to glow slightly.
You see an axe on the ground near a skeletons remains.

Glorandal wanders over to the mushrooms and examines them. "How interesting. I've heard of bioluminescent fungus but never seen it with my own eyes."

Glimmersteel tries to enter the cave opening quietly but kicks a small stone by accident. He curses under his breath knowing that mistake would have had him whipped by his old master. He peers into the darkness but even with the help of the glowing mushroom sees nothing unusual.

Lucia made her way in to the tunnel as well; being careful while she squeezed through the crack.  She joined Glorandal over by the fungus.

"Oh indeed.  All known bioluminescent fungi are members of the Agaricales order except for one which belongs in the order Xylariales.  It is a shame that the glowing effect dies when the fungus is dead."

While others were interested in the fungi, Valaric had his interest piqued by the skeleton and axe. Searching the skeleton to see who it might of been and how it died. Then examining the axe.

Valaric can see the axe is rather inelegantly made. Not Dwarven or Elven. The bones are from a stocky individual with a thick skull.

No apparent concern was given from the Goblin despite the passing ridicule.  It was clear she heard the chatter by the way her broad ears flicked and twisted a little toward their voices, but whether it actually registered was a mystery.  Wastrel continued to prod and shake at the rat in hopes of inspiring a reaction, though in time she grew frustrated.  Then confused... a dog-like cant of her head to one side was paired with a quick press down on the vermin's gut to listen.  No breath.  She knew for sure she hadn't killed it at first, but apparently its poor condition left the rat quick to give up the ghost.

Wastrel gave the rat another few shoves.  Nothing.  She batted at its head sharply with the flat of her palm in a quick, inquisitive pummeling.  Nothing.  With a snort she quickly undid the bindings to recoil her rope back where it belonged, then shoved the rat's diseased corpse off the loft to let it land with a sickening thud on the ground below.  If the others turned to look, they'd find the Goblin leap down as well with a far more graceful, silent landing on all fours that set to her immediately sniffing around across the straw-and-blood strewn floor, apparently on an investigation of her own as she followed along into the crevice in their wake.

Perception

Glimmersteel turned at the sound and stared at the corpse. "Note to self, do not have sex with a goblin."

Geoffrey gave an encouraging whistle as Wastrel comes back down and then looks at the axe. He approaches and collects the dead man's axe as everyone starts looking at fungi,"Alright, let's keep going, nothing here but glowing plants and a skeleton." he says, placing it in his backpack.

The next twenty feet of space is covered with little stalactites reaching towards the ceiling some trying to connect with stalagmites on the ceiling.

Glimmersteel creeps forward trying to be as quiet as he can.

Valaric with sword and palm at the ready, quietly worked his way through the stalagmites and stalactites using the shadows as protection for his movements.

As you walk through the stalagmites and stalactites, you hear a strange sound. You then realized that sound was coming from Geoffrey as he sings some sort of theme music while he hides on very thin stalagmite, his huge frame is obviously poking out of it.

Noticing the others were moving as quiet as they could, Lucia tried to emulate them, but Geoffrey's antics were too distracting for her to be very effective.  Even with his singing, she winced every time her feet found something else to crunch on.

While the others inched their way ahead in varying levels of stealthiness, Wastrel just lingered well behind the lot in an idle crouch.  Goblins had a knack for skulking around in caves to begin with and, with all the fuss some of the bigger, clumsier people were making, it was that much easier for her to go unnoticed merely by hanging back in the shadows.

The cavern seems to constrict in both size and height for what feels like forever.

The next cavern has some age worn wooden structures and a small pile of yellowed bones pierced by a sword.

Glim peers into the room for anything that might strike his attention. He was becoming accustomed to the darkness and the dim light the fungi produced.

He looks over the body with the sword poking out of it.

"They use a lot of stabby weapons these rat do. Very odd for rats."

"You thinking theirs something else here, it would make sense you know, what with that sword and all." Geoffrey says as he touches the wood,"These structures probably make the hint that their were people here. They could still be around though, maybe as hobos or something."

Valaric moves forward to inspect the wooden structures, looking for any clue on whom might of built them race wise. He also looks to see if anything might of been left behind or hidden.

Glorandal waited for everyone else to go through, except the goblin, before following behind. Trying not to step on anything, or snap off too many stalagmites. Though everyone else in front seemed to make that a bit easier.

He wanders over to the wooden structures with Valaric to examine them.

Turning to Valaric, Glorandal points to the scroll work in the wood. "Look at this, it's almost Elven, only... sharper, more jagged." Then scratching his chin, "It looks so familiar... I know I've seen similar work somewhere..."

Lucia did her best to stay in the middle of the group when possible.  "It is definitely looking like there is more to this than just giant rats, that's for sure."

Glim keeps pace with the others as they move forward.

"I always need to pee when I sneak around. Anyone else feel that way?" he whispers to no one in particular.

"Hmm, sounds like someones been drinking too much. That's never been a problem for me, if I want to go, I'll go right away." Geoffrey loudly proclaims proudly at his achievement. He then stretches his arm around,"Hmm, anyway, are we gonna get a move on at any point. I wanna go and destroy something, theirs nothing but wood and bones."

Glorandal can tell that they belong to an elven subrace, maybe Wild Elves or could be Wood Elves, it is unclear.

Everyone roll Perception checks.

Geoffrey approaches skeleton man, ready to end this fight before it began. However, once he swinged his blade, the skeleton parried his blow,"Give up, I have the power! The power of Greatsword!!"
