Mission 1, Scene 4: Under and Over

After departing the spire, the group finds itself in the sewer system. A quick check of the maps shows an entrance into the subway a few blocks east of your current position, which leads to an exit to the surface just meters from where your boat was parked.

The trip to the subway tunnel is uneventful. As you get into the subway system, you realize it looks more like an abandoned mine than a subway. As you turn to the right to head down the tunnel leading to your boat, you hear a shotgun blast coming from the opposite way. A few seconds later, another blast comes from the same place. Clearly somebody is in trouble a few hundred meters away.

OOC: You may help the person with the shotgun or head straight for your boat. It's entirely your choice.

A side hallway shows nearly two dozen edeinos trying to enter a building. They hesitate, until one tries to poke a head around a corner, only to be met with a shotgun blast, driving him back. He then turns and sees you, shouting warning to the other edeinos. They abandon their previous endeavor and focus on you.

OOC: It's clear that the edeinos were trying to force their way into a building with at least one person familiar with guns, but now they want you dead.. There are twenty total edeinos, five who are reality-rated.

Johnny knows he is getting tired, but decided to try and advance carefully. He swings his sword in a dizzying figure eight as he observed the lizards. With the ebbs and flows of reality around him, he lacks confidence in his ability to defend.

OOC From Gamemaster: This isn't the Nile Empire, so you had a chance to catch your breath in the sewer. Everyone is healed up of Shock.

The edeinos, seeing targets they don't have to worry about getting shot by, throw their spears your way. Each character gets targeted by four of them, giving them a +3 to hit. Everyone gets some impact, but Ash takes a direct hit that could do serious damage (Soaking is allowed).

Jacob swung the crystal arm in a wide arc, trying to smash as many foes as possible.

OOC-rolled a 15, spent a possibility for a 13, targeting 1 group and its leader. Not sure how much of a minus to my roll.

My total is 18 before any minus. Total damage is 18.

I regen 1 shock.

My weapon(crystal arm) stymies foes.

Putting seize initative in my pool.

Groups are currently a reality-rated leader and three Ord warriors. So attacking a group is -6. That's enough to hit for base damage, which will defeat the Ords. The reality-rated leader spends a Possibility to Soak.

Mission 1, Scene 4: Under and Over

"Da!" Ivan barreled forward, his spear aimed toward the throat of one leader. A preternatural ability to manipulate reality prevents him from damage. Ivan moves to the pack following the edeinos leader, cutting left and right to cut down those warriors, then leaning forward in an elegant lunge to wound the leader of another pack. This leader didn't force reality to bend to his will as much as the other one. A straight fight with no complications suited him perfectly. First 'squad' (the lizards of course couldn't even count up to five properly they were using fours) reduced to its leader, who survived only by the skin of his teeth, and another squads leader wounded. He recovered, checking up on the others.

Hero pooled.

Ivan is attacking 5 edeinos (2 leaders, 3 minions). There are some rule issues that need to be resolved, but if someone wants to do something in the meantime, go for it.

The Stymied condition applies if the target takes any damage (after Soaking). Based on the attack, the target might choose to accept a low Shock value and the Stymied or try to Soak it.

Ash realizes that while Jacob is quite strong, he is clumsier than Ivan. Fortunately, a little magic can solve that for the time needed to deal with this threat.

A few hisses from the leaders who lost their squads attract one edeinos from each of the remaining squads to join up. Ivan's "leader" gets one edeinos as help, while Jacob's gets two. Those who still have Possibilty Energy use it to try to disable the group.

Case feels reality shifting but manages to bend it to his will as he grasps a reality where the lizard man didn't manage to stab him.  Unfortunately he loses his tenuous hold as he tries to counterattack.

The wind is knocked out of Ash as he is hit solidly, and in a moment of self-doubt, he feels reality beginning to slip through his fingers. Unable to find the string to lead him back to his reality, he takes a step back, trying to protect himself while he searches for the way.

Jacob growled, and smashed all three lizard people with the gaint crystal arm. The wound he had taken was hurting...sort of. He was fairly sure he could not bleed to death. He was not even sure he had blood anymore, but actually getting hurt was pissing him off.

Jacob and johnny have inflicted 3 Wounds on their respective pack leaders (putting them at Wound Limit), Ivan has done 2 Wounds, and Case has done 1 Wound. (Next update will include Shock totals on them if it matters.) There are still 6 minion edeinos, who will adjust their targets based on what happens when their next action comes up.

Two cards have been played that will affect the battle:

Mission 1, Scene 4: Under and Over

JJ was glad for the distraction that the newcomers had given the edeinos as it gave her time to find more shells for the shotgun. Working her way back to the sewer entrance where the edeinos were, she saw a bloody fight with modern humans, probably a Delphi Council rescue team. The rest of her crew had been killed or incapacitated, so maybe they could free her to continue her mission to the strange tower.

One of the presumed rescuers took a nasty spear blow that would have killed a normal person. He was able to escape behind the guy who looked like Drago from Rocky IV in a Russian uniform and fire some sort of flame at the leader, but they were in hot pursuit. That meant they had to go past her line of fire, and she took the opportunity to punish them for forgetting about her. The two without the bone necklaces fell immediately, while the necklaced guy (or was it girl, do they even have gender?) started gushing blood more profusely.

With Ash reconnected but still hurt, keeping the leader who attacked him at bay and building up for a big play later both seem like good ideas. These things hit hard, but don't seem all that smart. Ash fakes a punch at the leader, and when the lizard raises his hand to block, steps back to put the mummy in its way.

OOC from Gamemaster: Bonus Dice for the Law of Savagery only apply when Attack is on the Approved Action line. However, even one of those bonus dice is enough to defeat the pack leader.

With JJ MacMurphy keeping the leader that was going to attack Case from reaching him, he switches to Johnny. A quick whistle shuffles the remaining minions (four) into pairing with a leader and attacking the remaining heroes. JJ smiles at Case and nods. Most of the resulting attacks fail, but the group attacking Jacob finds a weak spot in the armor, appearing to deal major damage.

Taking his cue from JJ, Case moves his hands like he's gather fire and motions like he's throwing it at the leader that's attacking Johnny attempting to trick it into exposing itself to the guy with the big honking sword.  However, he forgets to shout "HADOKEN!" and a few droplets of fire dribble limply out of his hands landing a few feet away in a pathetic effort to impress the lady who smiled at him.

Ivan's fury sends all four lizards to their goddess.

OOC from Gamemaster: The leaders' whistles and clicks told the minions how to rearrange themselves so each remaining leader had a minion to help. Jacob's Soak roll removed 2 of the 3 Wounds and all the Shock damage. There are now 2 leaders each with a nearby minion. One is near Ash and is undamaged, the other is near Johnny and is wounded

The field had significantly thinned out, but he wouldn't feel safe until they were all gone. He almost wished he had that gun back now. Fortunately, they didn't seem all that bright, so a quick imitation of the sound of one of those dinosaur things should distract them. It did, but only briefly.

Jonny takes a running leap at the remaining leader, bringing his shimmering katana down on its head, shaving off a piece of its skull. Not enough to kill it outright, but it definitely needs medical attention to survive much longer.

Johnny is left bent over and very vulnerable from the exertion.

Jacob and Johnny both got cards for successful attack. Jacob had no other cards so the Action card he drew gets pooled (no reason not to). Johnny has his card but since he has options, he gets to choose what gets pooled.

With the path clear of hostiles, JJ waves the group into the basement of a National Guard outpost. She leads them into the infirmary. Sadly, no medical officials are there, but there are enough first aid kits to heal one Wound and all Shock damage off everyone who needs it. In addition, someone with First Aid skill can try to heal more wounds off someone who needs it by testing against that skill. Difficulty is 10 plus the total number of Wounds on the healer and the recipient.

"Hey, guys! Thanks for clearing that path for me. The good news is this place has an armory. The bad news is that we don't have actual soldiers here to defend this place, so it's just us and the others who are wounded. We were on our way to a weird tower when the plane was shot down. A horde of edeinos chased us into this place. Most of the weapons turned into knives, but there are still three M-16s around here, plus old Bart here." (lifting up the shotgun). "I know the rifles are more damaging, but my long-lost daddy (not dead, just lost) wielded one so I'm kinda partial to him.

OOC from Gamemaster: JJ is now active as a Connection and she will be available for the rest of the adventure (which for you is getting to the boat and surviving the trip back to the carrier). She was part of the first group that tried to enter by plane and has been stuck here since it crashed, so she knows nothing about what has happened with you except what you tell her.

Jacob was checking out his wound and trying to hide it from the rest of the group. Sure enough, his own enhanced healing and the living land's energies where more than enough for it to heal. Once that was dealt with, he fixed his shirt and jacket to cover the rent in his clothing and flesh.

"Got anything from the Nile Empire? I most likely should stop lugging around this thing..." He gestured to the crystal arm he was carrying.

JJ looks at Case. "Oh, you have a boat? I suggested that as another entry point, but we weren't told about the flying lizard mounts, so we had a helicopter that transformed under us. I've done planes, boats and automobiles and want to do spacecraft eventually."

She then turned to the guy with the bandages over his face. "I'm sure I saw a standard pump action shotgun in the armory near the far wall, along with two 10-count boxes of shells. There's also a full 50-count drum of ammo for a Tommy gun, but I don't remember seeing the gun. Go ahead and look."

You can make a find test at DN 13, the monetary value of a Tommy gun. If you make it, you find one along with the ammo. If not, the shotgun is available along with 20 shots.

After passing over it once, Jacob realizes the Tommy gun he sought doesn't have the drum attached. He picks up the gun and heads over to where the shotgun is and takes the drum from there, attaching it cleanly.

The weapon will be added to the character sheet.

Case's face blushes red in embarrassment but manages a (weak) defense, "Well I totally burned through the crystal barrier in one go.  It's just that I had some trouble with my connection down here and it can be hard to concentrate after getting stabbed."  The young man looks over the rifles dubiously, "I dunno.  I picked up a spear if someone gets close and I'm not good with guns at all.  And it's another thing to carry to slow me down...," he thinks a sec, "Why don't one of you take an extra clip or two?"

Ash jumps at the chance to "replace" the M-16 Quinn requisitioned for him. "If all we're doing is getting on the boat and going back to the USS Ronald Reagan, I can manage on one clip. Ivan can take Case's extra clip." He pulls up his shirt to reveal a pair of large gashes, one in the abdomen and the other in his leg. "I'll take any first aid I can get."

Whoever does the First Aid test on you takes a penalty based on your Wounds. However, the Law of Life Cosm Card heals one of your Wounds before the test takes place.

Not sure how favored interacts with a possibility in this. I think Ivan has an effective First Aid of 9 here.

Favored is optional. It allows you to reject an initial roll that isn't a 1 and replace it with a new roll, but you must take the second roll. As you were able to use Favored, the new roll of 1 does not cause a Mishap, and the Possibility adds 10 to it. This makes a die roll of 11, for +0. So whoever you were trying to heal doesn't get help, but can still test Strength at the end of the scene to heal naturally.

Because it's favored for you, you can try again. Also, you can spend cards and a Possibility on the test if you wish. A Possibility on the current die roll would be an automatic success.

"No use sitting around here. Let's arm up and go." Ash gets up and stretches, testing out the gun he was handed. As he does, he feels the primal instincts grow and infuse his body with new energy. He checked his wounds, and found they were nearly gone.

14:51, Today: Gamemaster, on behalf of Ash (Alex Wilson), rolled 16 using 1d20, rerolling max ((16)) STR 8 + 3 (bonus) = 11, exactly enough to heal the remaining Wound.
