Mission 1, Scene 5: I'm on a Boat

The group, plus Ms. MacMurphy, make their way through the sewer system to the subway connection and then to an exit that pops up near the boat. Fortunately for you, the boat hasn't transformed or been scuttled by edeinos since it was left there.

JJ offers to pilot the boat. Regardless of who does, the boat makes its way downriver and is headed for the storm wall, but the sea rises up about a kilometer from the reality border. The water falls away to reveal a large set of jaws attached to a large aquatic dinosaur attacking the boat.

You are being attacked by a Mosasaurus. The size and demeanor of the beast together make this a Dramatic Encounter.

Drama Card for Round 1
Title:You Take it to Them!Dramatic Skill ResolutionA, B, C, D
Standard: Dramatic:H -/V Setback
Approved Action:Attack/ManeuverAdditional?:

Your group goes first, then the Mosasaurus. The monster gets a Setback, which will Disfavor whatever action it takes. That action will depend on how you choose to resolve this encounter:

Option 1: Escape
If you wish, you can try to escape. This will involve the boat pilot and the Mosasaurus racing to complete a Dramatic Skill Resolution. If you complete Step D first, those on the boat escape. If the Mosasaurus completes Step D first, you will be forced to fight it.

The boat is Speed 12, has a Maneuver Rating of -2, and a Toughness of 15. The DN of the DSR steps is 12 (your boat speed), which the pilot uses Water Vehicles to test. One other character can help, and the rest can take ranged attacks at the Mosasaurus, with a -2 penalty for each step difference (so Step A firing at Step C would be -4). The speed factor gives +2 to the Water Vehicles test when rolling for a step and +2 to defense if the monster tries to bite or ram the boat.

Option 2: Stand and Fight
If you choose, or if Option 1 fails, you can fight the Mosasaurus. In this option, you can stay in the boat or dive into the water to fight depending on your style.

Ash realizes that this monster, though hurt grievously by Jacob, could get lucky and eat them. So helping the pilot escape seemed the best plan. A powerful incantation on her to increase her Dexterity worked as well as he had ever seen.

Jacob kept up with the long burst, trying to take the creature down.

OOC-rolled a 13. Gets +4 for size, +4 long burst, -4 for positioning. Total to hit=14 to hit. The damage is only 14 however, so no effect. Is that enough to get a card due to attack being a preferred action?

Moving flurry to my pool.

Merely scoring a "hit" is enough to draw a card for Attack. It is now in your hand.

And for the record, even if you miss Toughness by up to 5, it's enough to inflict one Shock on a creature (but some creatures ignore Shock; this is not one of them).

Mission 1, Scene 5: I'm on a Boat

With a strong second effort and helpful spotting from Ash, the reality boundary comes into sight. JJ punches through the cloud, leaving the monster behind.

The shift of realities affect the party in various ways, but everyone is familiar enough with them to avoid major fallout from the shift. From there, an eventless ride to the USS Ronald Reagan ensues. After a lengthy debriefing, you are congratulated for your first mission completion.

OOC: The Delphi Council takes control of the Heart of Ukhaan. They thank you for obtaining it for them and give you the chance to rest, recover, and train while on the carrier.

Each of you has earned 5XP. You may spend or save them as you see fit. A separate thread for this will be set up to plan your improvements. Once that is done, we can begin the next mission. (Possibilities and hands will reset.)
