Prologue: The Call of Justice

Planet Mirial
Three years ago

Conversation in the discussion hall of the Jedi enclave was to be expected, but this one had gathered a small crowd for its rising volume and tension. Jedi and travelers alike watched as the Bothan Jedi Knight Gauan argued with one of his Mirialan students, Padawan Edor Sii-Van.

"I don't like it either, Edor, but there's too much we don't know yet! The Council has given the order to stay out of the conflict for now. It's our duty to respect their wisdom and compassion, so we have to stay here and continue our training for when it's time to act." Gauan was tall for his kind, at 1.6 meters, with brown fur and a long, vaguely feline face. It changed to be almost canine as he became more frustrated. Edor, meanwhile, was a young man of pale green skin tone with a pattern of black geometric features on his cheeks.

"Master, what is it we've been training for? I know you suggest caution rather than always following what feels like the will of the Force, and that's what I'm proposing. Innocent people are dying, and the number will just keep rising until something stops the Mandalorians. The Revanchist can do that, and I can use my training to at least find out what it is that's making the Council hesitate. If that gets brought to light and dealt with, then there won't be any more reason for the Council to hold back, right?" Edor's pleas earned a whispered response and nods of approval from the others gathered around, and Gauan took a moment before letting out a sigh and a nod.

"We won't join the fight, but it is our duty to find out the truth. Pack your bag, we're going." Edor's face lit up with a wide smile.

"We, master? Really? I'll be ready in a few minutes!" The young Padawan ran off toward the dormitories. It was about this time a tall and aged human woman strode into the discussion hall, with people making way as she passed. Her dark hair was tight back tightly, and the left half of her face was horribly scarred, leaving her eye milky white and blind. Her left arm was completely cybernetic up to the shoulder.

"Are you both quite sure this is the best place to have had that conversation? I'd suggest more discretion in the future." Knight Gauan stood tall as he faced her.

"Master Volsh, my apologies. It seemed appropriate. This hall is for discussion of matters regarding the Force and our understanding of it. The boy's understanding is heavily influenced by the Mirialan view that the Force must always be heeded. It momentarily clashed with my belief that feelings from the Force should be interpreted and analyzed first." Volsh raised her good eyebrow at his answer.

"And you were swayed by a Padawan's point of view, I saw. It was an interesting back and forth. I also heard that you're taking your Padawan to the Mandalorians against the Council's wishes, leaving your other students without a teacher. I know you've thought this through already, care to share your plan with us?" Gauan nodded, and looked over to his other top student, Padawan Nomino.

"Yes, Master. My other students still have their training plans ahead of them. Nomino, however, walks a different path than I can guide him on from afar. His talents are those of a warrior, a protector. He could use your guidance in the ways of the Guardian." The Knight turned to approach his Padawan somberly. "Nomino, the mission I'm taking Edor on requires the skills we excel in. You must remain here to protect the Enclave and its visitors. We will return, but I can't say how soon. Trust in the Force, but trust your own judgment first. The Dark Side is insidious, and will try to reach you if you mistake it for the truth. May the Force be with you."

Once Gauan and Edor had gone to prepare for their departure, Master Volsh took the time to speak with Nomino about the matter.

"In the time I've known him, Gauan has had a keen eye for trouble, the courage to walk into it, and the skill to see himself through. I know what the Council has said, but I trust his decisions. Which means now you are my Padawan. Prepare to sweat, Nomino. My ways are not Gauan's ways, and you will finish your training as a shield, rather than a knife. We'll begin tomorrow."
