Character Creation

Character creation for Barrowmaze follows the process outlined in the Labyrinth Lord rulebook, with a few important exceptions. Please note that we will be using the advanced options given in the Advanced Edition Companion, so each participant will need to select a race and a class for their persona. Basic classes which are based solely on a character’s race (i.e. Elf, Dwarf, and Halfling) will not be used.

When creating your character, please follow these steps:

  1. All characters in the Barrowmaze will begin play at the 2nd level of experience.
  2. Roll 4d6 for each of your Ability Scores. Drop the lowest dice from each roll. Your rolls may be assigned to your abilities however you choose.
  3. Select your character’s race/ancestry.
  4. Select your class. Please note that some classes and races have minimum ability scores that a character must possess in order to qualify for the race or class. Record any special abilities provided by your class on your character sheet.
  5. Demi-humans in Labyrinth Lord can multi-class if they meet the requirements for each respective class. The Advanced Edition Companion provides a listing of possible multi-class options. You should feel free to pursue a multi-class character if you choose, but I’d ask that you drop me a quick PM to let me know the specific combination you’ve decided on.
  6. Choose an alignment. Note that some classes have alignment restrictions.
  7. Generate your hit points. Note that the game uses the Advanced HD (Hit Die) option for determining hit points. For your first level of experience, assign your character the highest number of hit points available (i.e. If you are a Magic-User, since you generate hit points with a 1d4, you would receive 4 hit points for your first level). Roll your assigned hit die normally to determine the hit points you receive for your second level of experience. Be sure to apply your Constitution modifier.
  8. Roll 3d8 and multiply the result by 10 to determine your starting number of gold pieces. Add an additional 40 gold pieces to the final result to account for gold collected during prior adventures. Purchase equipment from the listings give in the Labyrinth Lord rulebook.
  9. Find your Armor Class, attack numbers, and saving throws and record that information on your character sheet.
  10. Record the languages you know on your character sheet. Should your Intelligence score entitle you to know additional languages, possibilities include: elvish, gnomish, dwarvish, orcish, goblin, gnoll, kobold, giantish, sylvan, and draconic. Should you wish to explore other possibilities, contact me.
  11. If you are a Magic-User or an Illusionist, select three spells from the list of first level spells for your chosen class to record in your spell book. State which spells you have memorized for the opening day of the expedition. If you are a Cleric or a Druid, indicate which spells you have prayed for on the first day of the adventure.
  12. Name your character. You may wish to provide some background for your persona. Record any biographical details on your character sheet.

If the dice have treated you poorly, you have two options. If your entire set of scores is poor, you may let me know and they make a second set of rolls. If there is only one ability score that is unacceptably low, you may reroll that attribute. You may keep the higher of the two rolls. If, after a complete reroll, you still feel you have a character that is unacceptably weak, contact me and we can work out how best to proceed.
