WORLD THREAD
In the large city of VIERNA (does anyone hate the name? I lean toward liking it but I could change it if it's hated), there are:
--The University of Vierna, a magical university (everyone knows that they're just starting up, and they're skeptical as yet...)
--The Temple of Tehuti (god of balance) (not a big public profile yet)
--The Bardic College
--TO THE SOUTH of Vierna is a large forest, the Forest of Mist (or "th' Mist Forest," as the dwarves call it more casually). People are also aware that there is a druidic circle there, the Circle of Mist-- people love them!
--IN THE AREA, there is also:
----a band of roaming knights: The Soldiers of Exaltation. (People love them too!)
----a roaming order of helpful monks, The Chubang Deon (a few people in the city have heard of them, but they aren't really even as well-known as the Temple of Tehuti yet)
Vierna is mostly a city-state... they do technically still owe a small tribute to the queen of Sefonia every year. But the queen and the Sefonian capital is so far away from Vierna that no one thinks about her all that much. For all practical purposes, Vierna's pretty much its own deal.
VIERNA:
--the Rich Quarter: Where the richest citizens live. They call it "the Parkside Quarter."
--the Nice Quarter: Where the lower-upper class and the upper-middle class live. They call it "the Merchants' Quarter."
--the Work Quarter: Where the lower-middle class and the upper-lower class live. In polit society they call it "the Summer Quarter."
--the Poor Quarter: Where the lower-class lives. Polite society call it "The Autumn Quarter."
--the Bad Quarter: Where the worse-than-lower-class lives. Downright dangerous. Polite society call it "the Winter Quarter."
--the Shop Quarter (near the Nice Quarter): where most respectable merchants offer their wares.
--the Smoke Quarter (near the Work Quarter): the industrial quarter. The smoke from it covers the rooftops of the city on still days...
--the University Quarter: formerly a sort of sub-rich quarter, but recently bought out to form the University.
--Temple Street (near the Nice Quarter): where all temples and shrines are found... (the officially-approved ones, anyway...)
--Play Street (near the Nice Quarter): theater district, bards, scribes
--the Grass Quarter (near the Rich Quarter): public park
--the Dock Quarter (near the Work Quarter): the docks, on the east side of the city.
--the Spear Quarter (near the Rich quarter): the city's barracks
--the Wall Quarter: the empty staging area that runs all around the city. An empty space of about 50 yards on the inside of the city's huge exterior wall, so that things like catapults can be moved around if need be. A good place to get mugged at night.
--Horse Quarter: (near the Spear Quarter): the stable area and stockyards.
--the Strange Quarter (moves around, but is most often near the University): where a lot of magical people used to live... and some still do. Strange things happen there. Used to be called "the Witch Quarter," but no one in polite society calls it that...
There are also:
--the old catacombs under the city, where rumor says at least a few undead still wait
To the NORTH of Vierna is: The Broken Mountains.
To the north of the Broken Mountains is: Quayern, though everyone in Vierna usually just calls it "The Northlands," and the Quayerns "the Northlanders."
Almost no one ever tries to cross the Broken Mountains-- trade with Quayern is done by ship.
