Rules for Consideration

I was reading the SRD and found the section on Unchained Rules where I read up on the Automatic Bonus Progression. That led me to a long Google search and I found a variation that I thought was pretty nice. It would certainly free up slots for magic items that are very hard to find or come by due to not being anywhere civilized at times. Let me know in this thread what you think or if you have other suggestions.

Level // Bonuses Gained

1st Resistance +1

2nd—

3rdDeflection +1

4th Mental Prowess +2

5th Physical Prowess +2

6thResistance +2, Toughening +1

7th—

8th Deflection +2, Resistance +3

9th Mental Prowess +4 or +2/+2

10th Physical Prowess +4 or +2/+2

11thResistance +4, Toughening +2

12thResistance +5

13th Mental Prowess +6/+2 or +4/+4 or +4/+2/+2

14th Deflection +3, Physical Prowess +6/+2 or +4/+4 or +4/+2/+2, Toughening +3

15th Deflection +4, Mental Prowess +6/+2/+2 or +4/+4/+2, Physical prowess +6/+2/+2 or +4/+4/+2, Toughening +4

16th Deflection +5, Mental prowess +6/+4/+2 or +4/+4/+4, Physical prowess +6/+4/+2 or +4/+4/+4, Toughening +5

17th—

18th—

*Deflection is a deflection bonus to AC, Resistance adds to Saving Throws (Fort, Ref, Will), and Toughening adds to your Natural Armor.

I'm a fan of Automatic Progression Bonus. I've used it before in previous years/games.

Are you pulling the armor attunement/weapon attunement out of it purposefully? If so, that's still fine, just curious.

I pulled the armor attunement and weapon attunement out because not every class such as the witch or wizard or other squishy spellcasters can benefit from it.

Mm, good point, and again, no worries I was just curious!

I just now realized that your list is a full variant with abilities shifted around by levels and such, whereas before I'd thought it was the main list with just the weapon/armor stuff pulled out.

As a Magus Domin can enchant his own weapon, so it's not as big a deal to me on that point anyway.

Again, I'm fine with it if everyone else is as well!

If we do go with the bonus progression, we will start with 750 gp instead of 1000 gp and each level will be wealth by level at 75%. Again, I know this might not be something everyone wants but was trying to give everyone boosts and leeway on purchasing magical items when they are available. You will still be able to purchase any magical items and benefit from their bonuses. This way just might allow you to get something with a little better boost.

I'm not sure ABP works very smoothly with APs since the loot is predefined and there's not quite enough non-bonus magic items to keep loot interesting. But then again they're designed with 4 PCs in mind rather than 8 Demigods so you're probably going to have to be tweaking everything about the adventures anyway.

In another game I'm in the DM came up with a tweak to ABP to account for preferences which has worked pretty well for us:
GralphidB:
Automatic Bonus Progression
We will be using the automatic bonus progression rules described here with the following exception:
You may either take the bonuses on the chart, OR you may instead get virtual GP that can be spent on bonuses. The bonuses cost an amount equal to the equivalent item, and you get an amount equal to the chart:
Level 4   -  3000
Level 5   -  5000
Level 6   -  8000
Level 7   - 11000
Level 8   - 16000
Level 9   - 23000
Level 10  - 31000
Level 11  - 41000
Level 12  - 54000

When spending virtual GP, you can only "spend" it on bonuses that you would normally get with automatic bonus progression (enhancement to armor, weapon, ability scores, bonuses to natural armor and deflection bonus to armor)

Each time you level up, you may rechoose whether to use the default bonuses or spend virtual GP, and if so, reallocate how you spent them.

These bonuses may be flavored as you wish, such as inherent character skill, divine favor, or unlocking power from your items, etc.

I am all for boosts but admit being confused.  This old dog has a hard time learning new tricks.  :P  I can sort of understand what the GM put up but the chart Davorn submitted on gp and converting stuff seems really complicated to me.

I’ve never used ABP, but I am familiar with the concept. I’m good with using it if everyone else is.

Rules for Consideration

For reference, this is the option rule being discussed:
https://www.d20pfsrd.com/gamem...c-bonus-progression/

Runemaster's concern with the system is that a Wizard probably doesn't care about getting weapon enhancement bonuses so they wouldn't get the same benefit from the system that a Fighter might. But just removing weapon/armor bonuses from the progression doesn't account for other builds which might not care about other bonuses(A dwarf probably cares less about Resistance bonuses.) It's all subjective. Just making it a GP amount at each level to be spent on magical bonuses allows it to fit better for different builds. For instance, in that game, my character(a Kineticist) doesn't care about weapon bonuses, so his level 6 ABP is: "Automatic Bonus Progression (8000): +1 Armor Enhancement (1000), +2 Dexterity Enhancement (4000), +1 Resistance (1000), +1 Deflection (2000)"
