Character Creation

We're using a version of FATE that ditches skills and stunts, so all you need to do is come up with 6 Aspects.

First, you get one Role. This is your central concept, as well as your place in the story and the group. Examples: Henpecked accountant, former child star, I was the prom queen!

Second, you get 1-2 Motivations. This is something you want... or something you want to avoid. Or a desire. Examples: In love with Max, Wants a white picket fence and 3.5 kids, Secretly hates her marriage. This is what drives you.

Third, you get 3-4 Attributes, traits intrinsic to your character. Examples: Large and hard to move, Afraid of the dark, trained HVC repairman.

Finally, you can have a Knack, which is a misc category of Aspect meant to serve as a catch-all category for social connections, organizations you might belong to, and anything else that isn't a Role, Motivation, or Attribute. Examples: Youngest of eight children, Soccer Mom, Local TV weatherman If players get special abilities, they'll fall under Knacks.

You get six total. Record which category they belong to.

Using Aspects

First, you get a passive +1 bonus when attempting an action covered by one of your Aspects. You can claim multiple bonuses, but only one per category (Role, Motivation, Attribute, Knack).

Second, you can Invoke an appropriate aspect by spending a Fate Point. This gives a +2 bons to a roll, or you can choose to reroll. This is done after the initial role is made, and you can only Invoke one Aspect per action.

You can spend a Fate point to Declare some narrative detail a fact, though the GM has final say on what's allowed. Example: Invoke Skilled Accountant to declare some paperwork contains egregious errors.

Finally you can be Compelled to make certain choices in line with your Aspects. Agree, and you get a Fate point, refuse, and you must pay one. This is the primary means of acquiring FATE points, so give yourself Aspects that can be treated as flaws as well.
