Re: Goonies: Astoria, OR

The teen looks surprised at the appearance of the adults. "I'm fine, just a little busted up. And that was... just some asshole, don't worry about it." His face brightened. "Actually I could use a lift if you guys are offering..."

"Ah... sorry, I'm afraid we couldn't afford to rent a car..." Jon says, looking embarrassed. "Still, if we work together, we should be able to pull up that bike... assuming it's not broken..."

"No, it's trashed," Brand shook his head. "Gears were stripped before I even left the road. Thanks anyway." He began climbing back up towards the road.

Jon does his best to help him reach the road. "First a police chase, now this crazed driver... I'm starting to see I was wrong thinking this is a sleepy town."

"Yeah, you said it, Jon." Caleb helps as well. "I'm Caleb," he tells Brand. "That's David, Rita, and Melanie. Those dudes were maniacs. I hope you press charges, man."

Re: Goonies: Astoria, OR

Realizing that this could be their only opportunity, Jon goes for a gamble. "Sure but, before you go... have you heard of a wishing well anywhere in town? A friend of ours was convinced it's the best lead to find the lost treasure of One-Eyed Willy."

Re: Goonies: Astoria, OR

"The what?" the kid seems surprised. "Oh. That's funny, my kid brother just ran off trying to find that stupid treasure. You guys are tourists, so you probably don't know... people've been looking for that for over a hundred years. I always tell him, if it was there, somebody'd have found it by now."

He shakes his head. "Only wishing well I know is up at the country club. But it's a member's only place, so... good luck getting in. I gotta go get my kid brother."

Jon shrugs. "Yeah, I know... but our friend spent years doing research on that treasure. Unfortunately, he passed away before he could come here himself... His final request was for us to follow the scant clues he gathered, and try to find the treasure. Even if it's a wild goose chase, we own it to him to try our best..."

Re: Goonies: Astoria, OR

Melanie quickly hid a grin at Jonathan's explanation. It was the sort of coincidence that fit right in with a movie like the Goonies.

Rita takes Melanie aside, keeping her voice low: "Do you suppose we could bluff our way into the country club? Or is the wishing well definitely someplace else?"

Brand shook his head at Jonathan. "Yeah well good luck with that. The guy who ran me off the road? His dad owns the country club, and he's just as big an asshole. Anyway, I gotta go get my brother." He turned and started walking up the road.

Caleb cocks an eyebrow at Jonathan. At least they know where the wishing well is now. "Too bad we don't have a car," he offers as Brand walks off. "I wonder how Bernie managed getting around. Well, shall we head off to the country club?"

With the kid gone, Rita speaks more openly.

"I think it's going to be more difficult for five motley strangers to get into the place, especially on foot. We'll need to look like we belong there.

"I'm thinking Mel and I show up, claiming we're meeting a member for a round of golf. But our car broke down--Mel's XKE which I begged her not to waste money on. Only thing we need is a member's name. Maybe we can figure one out from a local newspaper?"

Jon nods. "It's a long shot, but you could pull it off... Considering the alternative is to tail Brand to the Fratelli's place and sneak inside... well, I'd say it's a coin toss as to which one is harder."

"With you guys' acting skills, I bet you could get inside," Caleb offers. "And what about just climbing a fence and sneaking in? We just have to find this wishing well, right? I'm not exactly Batman, but I figure we can stay well hidden from any golf course security that might be lurking around."

Re: Goonies: Astoria, OR

It was quite the trip to the country club - up the road the same way Brand was headed. Some small talk was made along the way, mostly Brand filling the group in on the situation his neighborhood was facing - the Country Club was looking to expand, and without a quick infusion of cash, the bank was planning on selling everyone's mortgages. They'd be moving out in a matter of days, which had his little brother Mikey understandably upset.

"So my dad,"
Brand was saying, "He runs the local history museum. Keeps the overflow in the attic. And Mikey and his friends find what they think is a map to One-Eyed Willy's treasure... so being kids they naturally think they're going to go off and find the treasure when they should be home packing. And now I gotta go smack some sense into them."

He stopped at a fork in the road. "Okay, the Country Club is up that way. The well is smack in the middle of the third green. I'm gonna keep going up the road this way... didn't get a great look at the map but I think they're somewhere near the old lighthouse."

Re: Goonies: Astoria, OR

"All the better. They won't expect us to help the Goonies."

Mel smiled ruefully.

"I've known enough snooty types that I could handle the bluffing, but-"

She gestured at her outfit, particularly her leather jeans and boots.

"I'm hardly going to convince anyone I'm here to play golf. Climbing the fence might be a better idea."

"Fair point. Let's see if there's a place we can get across... Preferably in the cover of the trees." Jon suggest, looking along the fence for a discreet place to cross.

"You could probably get away with going in through the front door, Mel," Caleb says, and then immediately blushes. Nodding at Jon's suggestion, Caleb adds, "And let's try to stay out of sight, too. They're going to notice a group of people milling about outside."

Re: Goonies: Astoria, OR

"Well, getting the kids to let us tag along would be kinda hard if we just show up at the lighthouse out of the blue. Not to mention we'd have to deal with the Fratelli.

On the other hand, if they come across us while we're looking for the same treasure, I think we'd have a better chance to convince them to let us join up. And that well is the only way I can think of to do so."

"At least we'll know where they are and can talk to them."

Mel wasn't going to suggest climbing down while Brand was around. She couldn't even remember if the well had a rope.
