OOC: The Tavern

In order to get this ball rolling and keep the action moving. I'd love to give early start players a chance to roleplay some before the game starts.

I am thinking an interlude for a benny? That way we can develop some backstory of why the players are where they are without feeling thrown together.

I have a few ideas for this story and if anyone want to choose one of them then feel free:

* A messenger summons you to the city via a raven. You meet a rather lanky Elf in a tavern that gives you a task to go to a city an investigate a poisoning.

* You meet up with a group of merchants on during your wondering who offer you a job to protect their caravan of goods while they are heading to a festival.

* You meet up with a trophy hunter who needs someone to cover his back while he hunts in a very dangerous part of the land. He offers you a few coin but doesn't expect much from you other than to watch his back.

* You live in a city that is about to have a festival. Most of your time is spent gathering goods and talking to people (this is more of social path)

----

You certainly don't have to take any of these. They are just ideas to get the story moving.

Hi all, haven't had a chance to pipe up yet.

Obviously, I'm the Human Fighter =D  Serafina will be a bit aloof and dignified (lol at me trying to be dignified), but ultimately a good egg who wants to help others succeed

I hope to take an interesting mechanical approach and use both the Support rules and the Martial Flexibility feature.  But that's more of a goal than a reality right now lol

Good news. I purchased the Monster Guide and Companion which both will help in adventures. The companion does have some extra rules but not really. It does talk more about gods, religions and even places which is nice.

Also does anyone else want to do a prelude for their character? You get a free benny by explaining how you came to the town. Otherwise, it will be the typical RPG affair.

Prelude will be used for the adventure. Experimental is not. It's more of a time waster while others are doing their thing and creating their characters.

Speaking of which. I am about to go through private messages and see if I have any other characters completed.

So question for the players. Right now we have a total of six players who have submitted sheets. I have another two asking to join the game. The only one I think this could happen is to split up the groups into two which could be interesting. My only issue with this is if we were to do a cross over it wouldn't make sense if I ran the same adventure with the new players.

On the plus side I would be able to have extra seats which could help when/if players drop out of the game which is bound to happen to some extent.

What say you? Bigger group of six with lurkers.

or two groups of four same adventure different teams.

And really? If would be up to you if you think you can handle 2 groups and WANT to, then great. But otherwise, yeah people waiting in the wings for dropouts/ghosters is not a bad idea.

Re: OOC: The Tavern

As others have said two groups if you can manage it or one with lurkers if not.

If you run two groups I'd run two separate adventures not the same one. If you get drop outs in one group you can merge them together if they were playing different adventures easier than if they were playing the same adventure.

For example if you had 2 groups of 4 and one group was moving faster than the other but then lost 2 player and you merged them those two player might be ahead of the other group in the adventure and thus know more or already encountered things thus making the merge complicated.
But if they were doing different adventures you get more control over the smoothness of the merge and how they get together.

Sorry hope that makes sense it's 2:30 am here and I'm still half asleep going back to bed night night

Re: OOC: The Tavern

Good news! The cast is filled. We still have two lurkers who I believe would like to get in so overall this game appears to be popular so far.

I will keep the experimental on the side as it's just for fun and doesn't affect the current story/scenario. Maybe it will turn into a side adventure or something fun that could roll into the current adventure later. That way if we have some slow periods we can have some fun without ruining everyone's story.

Once the interludes are done, we can continue. Nothing grand or major is needed. Just a paragraph or two as to why you came to town. I have a few ideas *wink, wink* that would work nicely if you are short on ideas.

You gain an extra benny for doing it...so it never hurts to have more.

One inspiration for this was the scene in the first Suicide Squad where Harley Quinn just strips and puts on her costume in front of everyone. The only difference is after the fact, Camara wouldn't be confused as to why everyone is staring. She would realize she had committed a social faux pax and get that secondhand embarrassment.

It CAN work, if you set up correctly.  Casting two or three spells to fortify the characters who must charge into it, dropping an AoE damage or crowd control type effect, and as Camara points out combining it with a good old diversion would make it viable.  The problem is, if they have any shamans or champions or simply too many numbers... Savage Worlds isn't a system where you ever completely ignore hordes of enemy combatants.

Re: OOC: The Tavern

In 2E AD&D, a DM had an idea for an encounter for a 10th level party, kobolds riding jackals on the plains. Each kobold had 3 javelins, and they used hit and run tactics.

The party was almost wiped out.

Since then, the phrase "jackal riders" sparks terror in certain players.

When I updated them to Pathfinder, I had to create Dire Jackals as normal Jackals are Small, and thus not able for Kobolds to ride, but they are otherwise similar.

The experimental is not connected to this story. While some elements will play into the story, it is simply a playground of the sorts. It helps for people who might have a faster posting rate, gives them something to do.

But in general right now you might know each other. Most likely the people in town have meet one another. If you went to the festival, you possibly know each other.

It's a rather smallish village of population 1400.

As special note for the heroes with spells.

Go in and pick your trappings. This is important because creatures can be immune to certain types of spells. So picking them is just as important as having the spell itself.

My bad. I always get the sizes of towns/Villages/Cities confused.

In the original Forgotten Realms gray box, there is a mention of an orc tribe that numbers 50,000. That's not an orc tribe. That's an orc nation.

If you want real fun though, see really poor statements of what some monsters weigh in any game.

The Great Dragon Dunkelzhan in Shadowrun was 48 meters long, 17 of it tail. His weight was given at 2000 kg which is a joke at best.
Scale up any lizard of similar dimensions, and it will be WAY more than that.

OOC: The Tavern

So I am going to use the following for languages:

[Language unknown: <nce>]

When there is a creature that talks in a specific racial language that allows those people who are setup correctly to see the the language while the rest can not.

Here's an example:

The goblin says "[Language unknown: Resillrut Camehais]"

Those people without the language goblin should see gibberish. Those who have goblin tagged for their language an read it.

Keep in mind that, only two people had languages picked so I added those people. Everyone else needs to pick them.

All the languages are in lower case. Common please just use plain text. I don't want everyone coding their language text for common which in most cases will be the language of most of the game.

This is correct. Anyone with that language group will be able to read the text while others will just see none sense.

FYI everyone I am new to languages but this way seems to work well.
just type your speech.

highlight it and then select insert a private line: at the bottom

select language group and select the language.

How do we know how many languages we can speak -- do we have to take a skill for each or use the Linguist Edge?

What languages are available in the setting?

My character is a cleric of a dwarven god, so I would like to take at least some dwarf tongue. Is there a common tongue, regional, racial, others?

On Golarion, most individuals speak several languages. Instead of languages being skills, heroes in Savage Pathfinder either know a language or they don't. Characters start with Common plus half their Smarts die in other languages, (including the native language(s)

It's not always the right call to charge together because of AoE effects and stuff like that, but I figure this time it is worth trying.

This is true the new pathfinder system is a beast. They added some special bonuses to monsters that allow them to scale. Part of the testing ground for me is figuring out just how powerful the team really is.

So throwing incredible monsters and things at you to see if you can beat them or if they beat you is the game. Helps me tweak the real encounters later.

Re: OOC: The Tavern

It definitely take some "feel" but there's a few things to check -

Ignoring the effects of aces (and I do that just to make the math simple):

What is the probability that the characters can actually hit the enemy.
What is the probability that the characters can generate enough damage to actually hurt the enemy.
What is the probability the characters can resist or deal with the enemy's special abilities.
Can the characters use their unique, non quantifiable capabilities to deal with the encounter.

I have found 2 Extras per 1 WC is generally kind of "fair", and the more you scale each of these up or down the more you tweak whether it's hard and what's hard about it specifically.

I feel your pain about eight years ago I was rushed twice to the ER for kidney stones. Only advice the doctor gave me was drink beer which is not my favorite drink of choice. Best I can tell you, is if you feel them start soon drink as much lemon juice as you can. It will dissolve the kidney stone in your kidneys if you can throw off your PH balance.

Good luck!

Re: OOC: The Tavern

Is there any equivalent to Unstable Platform or Mounted Combat for Powers ?

Using melee weapons in Mounted Combat must use the lower of Fighting or Riding skills (p.103)
Ranged weapons get hit by the Unstable Platform (p.109) with a -2

Bolt applies "all other usual penalties" as a ranged attack, so Unstable Platform would apply to it for purposes of hitting the target (not for activation).

Otherwise, it would come down to the GM applying any situational penalty they feel might be incurred.

could be an old answer. I will have to check the guide and see if I find anything.

Re: OOC: The Tavern

MOUNTED COMBAT
Characters fighting from horseback (or
other beasts) have certain advantages and
disadvantages in combat, as described below.
Mounts aren’t dealt Action Cards—they act
with their riders. Animals may attack during
their rider’s action if desired.
Horsemanship:
Characters who wish to
fight from horseback must use the lowest
of their Fighting or Riding skills. This also
applies to other more extraordinary mounts.
Falling:
If a character is Shaken, Stunned,
or Wounded while mounted, or his mount
is Incapacitated, he must make a Riding
roll. If he fails, he falls. If the mount was
running, the rider suffers 2d4 damage (2d6
with a Critical Failure). Increase the damage
by an additional die or two if the mount is
particularly fast, flies, or the rider falls in
particularly rough or dangerous terrain.
Missed Ranged Attacks:
Mounts and riders
are affected by the
Innocent Bystander
rules.
If a shot intended at a rider rolls a 1, it hits the
mount instead.
Wounded Mounts:
When an animal is
Shaken or Wounded, it rears or bucks. A rider
must make a Riding roll to stay mounted, or
falls as above.

Another annoying question, is dismounting an action?  It's normally GM call, though in this setting it might be a question of if you have the proper saddle.

And no I'm not aware of an Unstable Platform penalty for powers other than ones that operate like a regular attack (i.e. if you can get a raise and extra damage on it, it's subject to the penalty).

From what I gather based upon the rules. It's more or less you swatting them away from you.

So here is what it says in the rules:

Swarm:
+2 to recover from being Shaken, Parry +2. Swarms are composed of many small creatures, so cutting and piercing weapons do no real damage. Area effect weapons work normally, and a character can stomp to inflict his damage in Strength each round.

I wouldn't say it's dumb. It's not just covered in the rules, which I guess could be lead to interrupt what is considered and area effect attack but to me it's something that does area effect damage which is not a torch. Even using it for the smell, there birds so while you might hit a few by natural swing the smell itself will not repel them.

It's a good thought though. I like the creativity.

Yikes. Normally the fire damage from a torch is good for swarms in PF1. The club damage for the torch itself is ignored, but you got the fire damage which after a couple hits would cause swarms to disperse. Usually.

It was one of the options to deal with them in the Pathfinder: Kingmaker game. The other being whatever AoE items or spells you have like acid flasks and alchemical fire.

Re: OOC: The Tavern

So I've asked on the forum but these here is what I am using for reference:
https://rpg.stackexchange.com/...rs-to-deal-with-swar

keep in mind based off 1e not 2e.

Still read below:

quote:
Run away
Most swarms have a speed of 20 ft, meaning that the standard humanoid character may run away from them with ease considering they have a 30 ft base movement speed.

Keep in mind that swarms are hundreds, if not thousands, of very small creatures. That is not something that even remotely sounds like something simple to handle for a mundane character. They are not used to creating explosions by snapping their fingers. As such, their most common reaction should be to get away from it and as fast as possible.

Mundane Weapons
Depending on the size of the individual creature that form the swarm, they may take half damage from slashing and piercing weapons, and full damage from bludgeoning weapons:

A swarm made up of Tiny creatures takes half damage from slashing and piercing weapons. A swarm composed of Fine or Diminutive creatures is immune to all weapon damage.

So, a swarm of ravens (a Tiny creature) could be killed with swords and spears normally, with some difficulty. While you couldn't harm a swarm of spiders (a Diminutive creature) using such weapons.

Makeshift explosives
You may improvise an explosive using lamp oil (1 sp) and fire:

You can also use a flask of lamp oil as a splash weapon. Use the rules for alchemist’s fire, except that it takes a full-round action to prepare a flask with a fuse. Once it is thrown, there is a 50% chance of the flask igniting successfully.

And you may also pour it on the ground and ignite:

You can pour a pint of oil on the ground to cover an area 5 feet square, provided that the surface is smooth. If lit, the oil burns for 2 rounds and deals 1d3 points of fire damage to each creature in the area.

Real explosives
Nearly all alchemical splash weapons are effective against swarms, as they deal damage in an area, and are especially effective against swarms:

A swarm takes half again as much damage (+50%) from spells or effects that affect an area, such as splash weapons and many evocation spells.

So, this would include acid flasks, alchemist fires, grenades and more. See the Alchemical Creations for a full list of them.

Try some repellent
If we are talking about a swarm of small insects, the Vermin Repellent (5 gp) may keep them off you:

This vile-smelling white paste keeps vermin at bay if spread on the skin. Normal-sized (Fine) vermin avoid you. Swarms of vermin must make a DC 15 Fortitude saving throw in order to enter your square. Once applied, vermin repellent remains effective for 4 hours or until you spend 1 round washing it off.

@annoyingimp I know the wording on swarms are confusing, but if they were immune to all "direct hits", they couldnt be hit by torches or mundane weapons either. –

Basically you aren't going to use big weapons like torches on a swarm of birds. Rats? More likely, anything pretty big? Sure.

But at the end of the day if you are just trying to do damage. Make a fighting roll and then simply roll strength. It works much of the same method. I believe they did this on purpose to make swarms more dangerous to weaker characters.

Re: OOC: The Tavern

Camara:
I just noted the rule from PF1. As with many things in the conversion not everything translates.

This is very true. I don't remember if SWADE had swarm rules before but the only place it's mentioned in PF for SWADE is the book am using. It's not in the Bestiary or Companion or anything.

Not sure if done on purpose or just done for fun.

Re: OOC: The Tavern

I may have to look at the rules because it sounds like swarms are even more terrifying in SWADE than in PF.

Sorry guys. Busy few days into the new year. I will be getting caught up on post this week. Is everyone still with us?

Unfortunately Jackdaw bowed out.

On unskilled rolls, the d6 Wild Die also has a -2 penalty for future reference.

Re: OOC: The Tavern

Are we playing it as if Jackdaw died in the fight, or will you be NPC'ing him for a while? Just want to know if Sigrun should be trying to Heal him (skilled rather than divine, since that worked out so well) or giving him Last Rites.

Given that Fearless Leader posted in Players Wanted requesting a player for a Half-Orc Barbarian, I will guess he's just barely alive.

He is barely alive. I have plans for him but I may have a new player taking him over. The last week and half has been a blur but today I am catching up. Some....:)

Re: OOC: The Tavern

So my son has tested positive for COVID this morning. He woke up in the middle of the night last night with a fever and sore throat. My wife and I are negative- we've had the booster but our son is too young to get it yet. I don't know what this is going to do to my time to post since my wife is supposed to start teaching tomorrow and I start next Tuesday, but I'll try to keep checking in.

Re: OOC: The Tavern

Sorry I owe you guys an apology. Work has been crazy lately.

To make a long story short, we had a person leave our department in a fit of rage (IT). Which left us short handed during rotations. This has lead to more work being dumped on our heads. I'll still be able to play but its most likely going to be weekend updates.

So yes, I am still here. Yes. I am going to answer post and get the show on the road.

Sorry about the delay.

For what it's worth I favor the idea of our captive taking us where we want to go, but I'm chilling and consider the game on hiatus until real life problems subside.

In reply to Camara (msg # 207):

I'm not the original player, but I'm taking him over.   The DM's permission was given of course. I don't really care when my character comes back in, this was mostly just my way of saying, I'm all caught up with what's happened, and introduce myself, after a fashion, to the rest of the group.
