History
Yasmin al-Sakhra’s life was always destined to be overly complex, through no fault of her own. Her father was a noble of only modest rank, a great love of bragging and displays of wealth and power, and many whims. For Yasmin’s fifteenth birthday, he invited everyone in his entire (if small) domain personally to come to the grand occasion, and while many workers and merchants could not attend, it was still quite well-attended (by beggars and the gentry alike) and as her father gave generous gifts to all who attended, the attendees gave gifts and blessings in turn, with the climax of a great mage-warrior who, rather drunk, blessed her with a great talent for the use of armor and shields, and a Peri who gave her a much more conventional blessing of luck and beauty.
What they didn’t expect was that her father had inadvertently invited a truly dangerous being to the affair-- Sengu, a Dao of great power, disguised as a merchant to cheat and harry the people of the kingdom! But while Sengu might have been offended if snubbed or not given a place, she had, in fact, been treated as an honored guest, and even given gifts! This was quite acceptable, and Sengu might have simply departed afterwards… but she regarded the gifts given by the mage-warrior and the Peri as paltry and useless, and possessed by a great desire to show them up, manifested in all her titanic glory! She then declared that, as a mightier being than any other present, her gift would be truly worthwhile, and gifted the girl with power.
This created an awkward position for Yasmin; her hand became sought by many for the purpose of using her power or gaining the favor of the spirit that had so blessed her, but she wanted no part of it. Instead, she disguised herself as a young man in armor, slipped out of the palace, and left her homeland to make her own way in the world. (Sengu still occasionally communicates with her, and gifts her greater power once in a while; Sengu approves of the chaos both her patronage and Yasmin’s departure caused, and considers her success to reflect well on the Dao.)
