Character Descriptions and Background

Once you have generated the basic stats for your character, write a brief description of your character and a short background of information that the other passengers and crew would have learned during your voyage.  Add this information to your character sheet.

I have added a standardized format to your character description so you can add a bit more info for other players to see.

Character Descriptions and Background

Herr Strauser is a large Prussian laborer who keeps to himself, particularly around the upper classes, avoiding his social betters. Interacting with them makes him acutely uncomfortable, as if he fears he'll get in trouble for the effort.

Among other working class passengers he's more relaxed and congenial, though isn't very driven to seek out company and only seems to understand German. He spends most of the trip smoking and watching the waves.

Sophie as she calls herself or 'The Honourable Miss Jane Sophie Swift' as those more interested in position than money insist on calling her even though she is travelling second class, with her black hair and dark eyes set in an extremely pale face has an almost elfin look about her.

She dresses simply but elegantly and seems to wash her clothes every other day as if she doesn't have many to spare.  As well as a simple dress and sensible shoes, she wears a wide brimmed hat, tied down to protect against wind and thieving albatrosses.

She is travelling to India for an arranged marriage to a rich man she has never left.  Meanwhile her English lover has married a Swiss girl and moved to Tuscany.  Ah well, she enjoyed his poetry.  Perhaps she will learn to write poems of her own.

Character Descriptions and Background

Craig was one of the younger sailors crewing the Chance before their sudden misfortune.

He mostly would have blended into the crowd of seaman, running this way or that with every call, whistle or bellowed order. He would have avoided interacting too much with any of the private passengers lest he draw the eye of the Bosun.

Scottish by birth, he initially learned his trade on a Whaler under his father.

Character Descriptions and Background

Description: Victor stands a 6 foot, lean but developed frame with steel-grey eyes framed by his short-cut brown hair.  His features are decidedly Gallic but he speaks with a solidly Southern English accent.  The young man's eyes shine with a native intelligence and curiosity.  With his straight, intact, and white teeth he makes quite a handsome figure, particularly when he smiles.  While his skin is clear and tanned, it is marred in places by the faint tracery of old scars, particularly his back which bear the stripes of flogging.  Additionally, his calloused hands belie the suggestion of a upper-class upbringing and education.

Notes: Friendly, optimistic, and possessing boundless energy in the months onboard the Chance (transit between Liverpool and Bombay took 3 to 6 months) there's hardly a thing any of his fellow travelers don't know about Victor.  Assuming at least there is at least some truth to his tales of outrageous fortune.

Kidnapped, rescued and then impressed by the Royal Navy as a powder monkey, serving as a sapper in the Bombay Engineers, surviving the Vellore mutiny, and latter as a surgeon's assistant before returning to England to 'settle some affairs', Victor is quite open with his ambitions and hopes to build a fortune in India given the available opportunities.  His enthusiasm would be infectious if his ever ready anecdotal tales didn't seem so collectively absurd.

Still, he tells his tales earnestly and he's always ready to help out or entertain which helps lift spirits during a grindingly long journey.

Character Descriptions and Background

Chris hired on with The Chance shortly before she set sail. Anybody worth their salt would recognize Chris is a seasoned, professional sailor, though there is no supportive backstory provided. To crew, Chris has proven to be a quiet, reserved individual who keeps his own company. Like most of the crew, Chris has not associated with the passengers during the voyage. On The Chance, Chris acts as carpenter's assistant and was usually found in the ship rigging or wherever else spot-repairs were necessary. Chris often volunteered to man the crow's nest as lookout at night.
