Re: Chapter 4: Arcane Chambers

Devan looks at the warning sign,"Oh, it seems we've stumbled upon a secret dwarven Brewer societys very own cellar. I wonder what they're making in their." he says, but then his question was answered by the appearance of the undead beholder that shot a death ray at him,"Gah, ugh, I see, so the Brewers have been using aberrations as they're brew. What a shocking discovery, the readers we'll eat it up." he says, looking worse for ear from that hit, but still standing.

Re: Chapter 4: Arcane Chambers

"Ah, a dwarven brewery!  Dwarves are famous for their mastery of brewcraft, so I would be fascinated to see what this facility holds."

The rows of brew vats and barrels were in a terrible state, but it was still of historical interest to the druidess.  The exploration took a dreadful turn, however, when an undead beholder loomed up out of one of the silos and attempted to drain Devan's life with a corrupted necrotic ray!  "Oh, dear!" the druidess cried in alarm as she clutched the celestial jewel and took on a starry form wielding a mystical chalice.  Glittering starlight drifted from the chalice to heal Devan's wounds.

Travic then conjured an illusory sandstorm to conceal them from the undead beholder.  Knowing a little something about undead, she whispered to her companions, "It cannot see us through the illusion, so it will be unable to find us if we remain quiet...!"

  • As a reaction, use one charge of Cosmic Omen (Weal) to grant Devan +1d6 to his Con save
  • Bonus action to expend a use of Wild Shape to take on Starry Form (Chalice), which lasts 10 minutes
  • Bonus action: Cast Healing Word on Devan to heal a total of 15 HP, including Chalice bonus healing

15:20, Today: Andromeda rolled 15 using 1d4+4+1d8+4.  Healing Word + Chalice extra healing.

Onyxclaw squeaks as he looks at the undead rise and fiddles with a knob on his glove while looking at the thing. "Dead eyes! dead eyes!  no good."

He holds the gloved hand out and a stream of steaming liquid splashed the beholder zombie with a thick goo.

Re: Chapter 4: Arcane Chambers

From the brilliant thinking of Travic you all become immortal gods, raining down vengeance on the undead beholder.

You move on to 22d

Beyond a 10-foot landing, this hall gradually slopes down toward the west.

(Perception dc18)
Secret doors at the west end of the hall open into areas 22e and area 22f, respectively. Dwarves used to fill barrels of ale and roll them down this hall to be stored in the secret chambers.

The Melairkyn dwarves built three 20-foot-deep pits in the sloped floor to guard their ale supplies. The pits' covers blend in with the surrounding floor, though a successful DC 15 Wisdom (Perception) check detects each pit.

When a creature weighing 50 pounds or more steps on a pit's cover, it swings open like a trapdoor, causing the creature to spill into the pit below and take 10 bludgeoning damage from the fall. The lid is spring-loaded and snaps closed after the creature falls through.

(History check dc14) you recall the picture on the doors:
The dwarves constructed the pit covers so that they won't open if an object is rolled over them. A character can circumvent the traps by climbing into an empty barrel and rolling down the hall or climbing onto a barrel and balancing atop it as it rolls down the hall. Balancing atop a barrel as it careens down the hall requires a successful DC 20 Dexterity (Acrobatics) check.

Jhank was impressed with the vats, Ilikas was right. She made a mental note to invite herself to a Dwarven party as they clearly knew how. It seemed like there should be more to the room, but she just couldn't put her claw on it.

Andromeda was relieved to see the end of the zombified beholder.  "Clever thinking, Travic!  I wonder why it didn't think to remove itself from the illusion?  I suppose zombies are not known for their cleverness, even beholders."

Carrying on, the starry-form druidess peered down the sloped corridor by the light of the celestial jewel.  The floor looked entirely clear with no sign of anything dangerous whatsoever, and so Andromeda said to the others, "Looks clear!  Shall we continue onward?"

Onyxclaw watched in satisfaction as his acid splashed and clung to the beholder, the acid eating away the already rotting flesh.

As that happened, he smiled, again reseting his glove. He looked at the beholder, the smile fading. He was ready to move

"I concur, Miss Andromeda." Devan says in agreement, feeling quite rest up thanks to their starry eyed druid's healing magic,"Still, how odd, I thought we'd find at least their hidden cellar filled with barrels of ale. They must not have built one." he says, blissfully unaware of the hidden room right next to them. He however follows the group to the next room.

Forgot about the history roll option in my last post, but no luck there either:
  1. 11:35, Today: Andromeda rolled 9 using 1d20+1.  History.

"I suspect the ale stores must lay down this very corridor, mister Crier.  Let's investigate!"  Andromeda proceeded to march down the sloped corridor with utmost confidence that the way was safe.  Thus it came as quite the surprise when the hatch dropped out beneath her feet, sending the druidess plummeting into a pit trap in all her starry glory.  Her surprised yelp was cut short by the trap door snapping shut behind her!

Upon seeing Andromeda fall, Travic gestures to the earth, and forms a flying platform to stand on. He hovers over the pit trap, uses his TK to open the pit with slight pressure to activate the trap, and then he lowers a rope from his pack.

Onyxclaw followed after the druid, confident in her words, but stopped short when she disapeared down the trap.  He walked over to check the door to see if he could open it.

He easily found it, but couldn't find the way to open the door, the kobold grunting.

(OOC: Jhank take 10 dmg as well for making me wait. JK. It’s not punishment. It’s because I love you and don’t want you to miss out on the fun..)

Everyone take 250XP for the tap room traps and zombie beholder. This place was a dead end.

The only thing that hurts more than your pride is your ass. Travic and Onyxclaw work together to get the trap doors back open so Andromeda and Jhank can climb back out. The ale house turns up a dead end, no loot, no new information, just silly traps.

Groan.

You decide to carefully return the way you came and then explore someplace new….

Options include the tunnel that will take you to level 3, also 23a, 17, 13e or 14a, 15 or 16

You are leveled high enough for dungeon level 3 to be an easy go, and I’m in no rush for the Dragonbowl, we have plenty of time as far as in game calendar. My vote is to completely explore this level but that’s just because I don’t want to have to read more. Hahahah.

Re: Chapter 4: Arcane Chambers

By the time Andromeda managed to clamber awkwardly out of the pit trap she was shaken and wheezing in a manner quite beneath the dignity of her glamorous starry form.  "Many thanks for pulling me out, my friends.  I feel rather foolish now, ha ha!"  Once it was discovered that there was no reward nor even interesting discoveries for all the trouble, she felt all the more embarrassed!

Returning to the end of the crystal-studded corridor in which they'd destroyed the animated ballistae, Andromeda gestured to the door leading south.  "Let's see what lies down this way, shall we?"  The druidess cracked open the door and peeked at whatever lay beyond...

Athletics to see just how embarrassing the climb back out of the pit is... not bad?:

Jhank yelped in when the floor gave out, landing straight on her ass and practically spraining her tail. ''Bloody fuckin rat tits,'' Jhank snarled, scrambling out of the pit as soon as she could, nodding at Travic and giving Onyx a surprisingly measured pat on the back, ''thanks man.'' She felt her tail again before moving on to the next room with the others, ''that's gonna hurt all day,'' she grumbles.

Re: Chapter 4: Arcane Chambers

23a. These rooms once formed a temple dedicated to the dwarven god Dumathoin, the Keeper of Secrets under the Mountain. The walls climb 15 feet, then angle inward to create a peaked, 30-foot-high ceiling. The sloped upper walls have red, yellow and green glowing crystals set into them. These crystals fill the hall with dim light.

The lower walls were once lined with carvings depicting dwarves pushing mine carts toward the west, but these works have been defaced and, in some cases, replaced with stony tentacles that writhe and protrude from the walls, trying to grab at you. EVERYONE MAKE AN INTELLIGENCE CHECK DC10 TO NOT TOUCH THEM. IF YOU FAIL, YOUR CURIOSITY GETS THE BETTER OF YOU AND A TENTACLE SMACKS YOU IN THE FACE WHEN YOU GET TO CLOSE, TAKE 4 BLUDGEONING DMG.

23b. Standing in the hall are the skeletons of four Huge dragons, their bones held together by copper wire and yellowed glue. A few pieces of each dragon have broken off and fallen to the floor. A fifth dragon skeleton in a similar state of disrepair fills an alcove to the south.

Nature check dc14: These are real skeletons of five adult dragons—one each of brass, bronze, copper, gold, and silver. The gold dragon skeleton occupies the southern alcove, while the others are lined up in the main hall. The skeletons are harmless, dragon bone may be worth it's weight in gold to the right buyer.

24. What was once a dwarven shrine is now the tomb of a long-dead adventurer.

Splayed across a broken stone bench in the middle of the room are the skeletal remains of a tiefling clad in rotted leather armor. The skeleton clutches a quarterstaff that has become brittle with age. A tattered backpack contains adventuring gear that has rotted or rusted away.
Survival or Medicine check DC18, Onyxclaw has advantage: You recognize the signs: this man died being strangled by a cloaker.

Ultimately a dead end, but let's do a round of RP before continuing on to 25.

Re: Chapter 4: Arcane Chambers

Andromeda looked upon the hall and marveled aloud, "A temple to Dumathoin, Keeper of the mountain's secrets!  Quite desecrated, however.  For shame."  The druidess peered curiously at the strange stony tentacles, but decided that nothing good could come of putting herself within their reach.  Further ahead she gasped in awe as she entered the next chamber and beheld the draconic bones on display, "Dragon skeletons!  My goodness, look at how grand and fearsome they are.  Quite harmless now, by all indications.  These bones would be worth a fortune to a collector, but I daresay they would be difficult to transport..."  She picked up a fallen bone fragment of a size to hold in one hand and tested its weight.

Further exploration turned up a shine-turned-tomb, and Andromeda looked curiously upon the horned skeleton.  She couldn't recall having ever seen a tiefling skeleton before, and was intrigued by the differences in bone structure, both subtle and less so.  "An unfortunate end for this fellow... it seems that cloakers were a menace in his day as well."

Onyxclaw entered the temple and was immediately fascinated by the tentacles. He moved forward. "Maybe parasite....it could.."

THUMP

The tentacle claimed into onyxclaw, sending him sprawling on the ground with a half squeeze, half groan. He stood up rubbing his face. "BAD TENTACLES!" He yelled, still rubbing his face as he left

In the room of dragonbones the kobold was again excited, going to the nearest and retrieving a bone from the floor, placing it in his pack. "Dragon bone rare. make something good with."

In the next room, the kobold looked at the rotting tiefling and frowned, something familiar with it, but he couldn't place it. When Andromeda mentioned cloakers, he paled, remembering his near death experience.

He none the less searched the corpse for anything that could be of value....finding nothing, he groaned.

For reference later, Travic took the copper dragon skeleton. The skeleton weighs a total of 2,000 pounds (2,000gp). This will look amazing in someone's mansion. Perhaps someday YOUR MANSION.

Onyxclaw takes the left claw of the brass dragon, he could make a very cool dagger out of it perhaps, or sell it for 16p.

Re: Chapter 4: Arcane Chambers

Andromeda looked on in awe as Travic stowed away an entire dragon skeleton in the extradimensional space inside his ring.  She asked with a chuckle, "Will you have any room in the ring for yourself, Travic, or will you be resting alongside a dead dragon?"  The druidess realized after the fact what she'd implied, and her pale cheeks colored with embarrassment!

Devan Crier:
"... Miss Andromeda, you have strange hobbies I must say. I'm one to think that examining the bones of fallen adventurers is quite rude don't you think, unless their hiding some magic item or coin, then carry on."

Andromeda looked away from the skeletal tiefling and said, "I was only looking, just as you are!  I have some training in the healer's art, so I take a scholarly interest in skeletal structure, you see."  She said this as Onyxclaw proceeded to properly ransack the corpse under discussion.

Having reached a dead end, Andromeda left the shrine-turned-mausoleum and said, "We passed a door on the way here.  Let's have a look that way, shall we?"  The starry druidess proceeded to do just that, and carefully opened the door with the utmost sneakiness, guided by her own twinkly magic.

Jhank got a good laugh out of watching the boys get smacked, making a mental note to steer clear of the wall wrigglers. The Lizard lady got very excited when she saw the dragon skeletons, scurrying over right away and picking up one of the bones. She knew a lot about their worth because her family helped trade them fairly often.
When the party came upon the rather permanently deceased Tiefling, Jhank decided it was a good idea to get a hands-on look at the horns a kinda sorta yanked the head off to get a better look.''Oh man! This is so cool! Always to see these guys up close. I ran for a week with a guy who was a Tiefling. He was well endowed in multiple ways if ya get my meaning. North and south. Still not as good as the Bugbear though,'' she said thoughtfully before dropping the head back on the ground, making sure not to hit onyx
