Chapter 6: Return to Arcane Chambers

With everyone back in the bodies they belong to, you return to the Arcane Chambers, passing the petrified victims and their quadrone guardian that waves goodbye as you leave, thankful that no one did anything stupid. Or so it would seem. No one speaks modrone, so it's hard to tell what he was saying.
26a
A fancy door indicates elvish craftsmanship. These chambers are much older than the dwarf-hewn chambers that surround them, as evidenced by the crumbling walls, the slanted floors, and the thin streams of dust pouring down through cracks in the sagging ceiling.

A dozen elven sarcophagi arranged about this dusty room have been reduced to rubble.

Time and neglect have all but destroyed wall carvings that depict elves mounted on elk, parading through a forest as the seasons change around them.

PERCEPTION DC20 to spot the secret door to 26b.

As soon as the door closes behind you two owlbears emerge from their nest that was obscured by sarcophagi debris.

"WHOOOOOOOT? RAAAAAAAAAWR!"

They charge at you, desperate for a meal. Anything will do, even that small lizardy fella.

Chapter 6: Return to Arcane Chambers

After the awkward but also curiously exciting aftermath of the body-swap mishap with Travic, Andromeda was glad to distract herself in appreciation of ancient elvish architecture.  The druidess looked about  the crumbling chamber and said, "A shame to see such a majestic structure fallen into ruin, but I'm sure--EEP!"  She actually jumped in terrified surprise at the bellowing hoot-roar that heralded the arrival of a decidedly unfriendly pair of great beasts!

Staggering back from the danger, Andromeda quickly conjured a cloud of tiny twinkling stars that swirled about the massive beasts and tried to cling onto feathers and fur, highlighting them as excellent targets.  She then drew a hand back and began to glow herself, taking on the cosmic form of an archer constellation wielding a bow of starlight.  The starry druidess drew back a shining arrow like a mythical figure... then sent her radiant projectile sailing way over the owlbear's head!

  • Perception 11 misses the secret door
  • Cast Faerie Fire In a 20ft cube to catch both owlbears!  DC 15 Dex save or be glowing, grant advantage, and no invisibility.  Concentration, 1 minute.
  • As a bonus action, expend a Wild Shape to take Starry Form: Archer and make an attack!  Advantage doesn't help because my highest roll was a 10, lols :(
  • Move to the back of our formation

Chapter 6: Return to Arcane Chambers

In reply to Andromeda (msg # 2):

Telric fails to notice any secret door, but he does move in front of Andromeda. Once everyone has chosen to either retreat or stand and fight, he creates the illusion of a stone wall between them and the owlbears.

OOC-delaying until all the players act, then moving back to block for Andromeda and using silent image to make a stone wall. If owlbears want to get past it, dc 16 int save.

Rolled a total of 5 on my perception check.

Chapter 6: Return to Arcane Chambers

Devan couldn't notice the door as he was laser focused on the owlbears,"Hmph, guess we'll have a fight in our hands." he says, taking a stance of a boxer. He goes for two fast jabs, they all missed. But it was a distraction for an uppercut, which crooked the monster's beak somewhat.

Onyxclaw entered the room, still confused by Travic and Andromeda's behavior. When they entered and the owlbears charged, Onyxclaw screeched in fear, holding a hand out, a line of acid came from his glove at the right most owlbear, hissing as it hit the ground and anything else it hit

Chapter 6: Return to Arcane Chambers

DM tries hard to channel his inner Jhank:

"Owlbears!!!!" Jhank hissed and dive rolls left, smashing into a few clay pots that the owlbears somehow hadn't smashed already. Now they were smashed.

Waiting for the perfect moment to strike, she dive rolls toward the owlbear and slashes with her dagger.

Hit with a sneak attack for 14.

Chapter 6: Return to Arcane Chambers

Both owlbears begin glowing from Andromeda's spell.

Owlbear 1 rubs it's beak from Devan's uppercut, "HOOOT" it makes a bruce lee gesture, then swipes its claw at him. hits 20ac for 18 slashing

Owlbear 2 notices Travic's wall. A wall that was not there earlier. Just like the pots situation, this wall needs to be reduced to rubble. The Owlbear runs at it and swipes at the wall, intending to break it down to debris, but the wall stays put. This enrages the owlbear, it continues swiping through the air at the illusion, having now clue what the hell is going on. "HOooooooot?????"

In reply to DM (msg # 7):

Seeing how one of the creatures was blocked by the illusion of the stone wall, Travic focused on the other. Using the new wand, held in his ring hand, he blasted the wounded Owlbear twice. After all, to Travic and his friends, the wall was transparent.

Ooc: hits wounded owlbear twice for a total of 24 damage. Maintaining concentration on illusion.

Chapter 6: Return to Arcane Chambers

Andromeda watched the owlbear's claw swipe at Devan and tried to tweak the threads of fate just enough to alter the outcome, but alas.  The shady reporter was doomed to be swatted to death by a sparkling, quadripedal owl-monster.

Travic's illusory wall seemed to befuddle the beast, for which the druidess was profoundly grateful.  She wanted to mention how clever it was, but decided against it since the sound of her voice might give away the trick!  Instead, she launched a ray of burning starlight at the wounded beast followed by a celestial bowshot that struck home in the monster's glittering, feathery hide.

Chapter 6: Return to Arcane Chambers

"Gah, so... you are a black belt master eh, I've heard tells of many combatants such as you. Doesn't matter now for I have become stronger than you could ever imagine." Devan says to the owl, he takes a deep breath and slowly raises his fists. Thanks to Andromeda's spell, the flames help him pinpoint many of the owlbear's weakpoint and vitals. He strikes at one with precision that would paralyzed a man, and then he sends a swarm of fists to the monster. Hitting all points and vitals at once.

Owlbear 1 goes down.

Owlbear 2 roars at the immortal wall and turns toward those that killed her mate. Jhank's timing on the dive roll could use work, as the beast swipes her hard.

Jhank takes 20 slashing. Jhank's ac is 17, so if Andro wanted to try another woe thingy your odds are 50/50 again. HP 47/67

Devan didn't let up, he charged toward the next owlbear and let out a stream of punches. Blow after blow after blow, he didn't skip a beat and connected his hits, then he ended it with a finishing blow. Chapter 6: Return to Arcane Chambers

Final use of Cosmic Omen: Woe successfully deflects that hit against Jhank!:
  • 17:12, Today: Andromeda rolled 6 using 1d6.  Cosmic Omen: Woe.

The second hulking beast fell to Devan's furious fists, and the druidess in twinkling celestial form lowered her starlight bow and said, "Oh my.  Well done, my friends."  She walked around to the other side of the illusory wall to get a better look at it, then turned to Travic to say with a smile, "A clever misdirection with the illusory wall, Travic.  I am glad that beast never puzzled its way through to crush us!"

Andromeda carefully stepped around the massive corpses and turned her attentions to the crumbled elven sarcophagi, which brought back her frown.  "As I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted, it's a shame to see this grand resting place in such a state.  I wonder how the elves came to have a mausoleum in a dwarven structure?"

After taking some notes in her travel journal, the starry druidess turned to the exit and said, "Shall we proceed, if all are ready?"

I think Jhank is our last chance at that DC 20 Perception check to find the secret door at 26b!  Otherwise, let's carry on to 26c.

Suddenly flowers bloom around her feet, spelling out the words 'Lady of Victory.' They quickly fade away, also being illusionary.

"Some of us are injured. Should we rest in a safe haven, or are we prepared to go on?" He asked the others.

Not much else to do here anyway." he says, feeling a grand spring in his step as he walks,"Sides, I'm not that injured, I can go for at least ten more rounds of combat like that. So let's go."

Suddenly flowers bloom around her feet, spelling out the words 'Lady of Victory.' They quickly fade away, also being illusionary.

Andromeda saw the flowery title and looked bashful, but also a bit pleased.  She protested, "The guiding stars would have been of little use without skillful allies to take advantage.  That's teamwork!"  The druidess who still glowed in the archer constellation made a perfunctory effort to brush away the flowers herself before Travic dispelled the illusion.  She smiled and added, "If I'm the Lady of Victory then you're the Lord of Trickery!  On account of the clever illusions, that is."

Devan demonstrated a remarkable capacity for self-healing, which seemed to settle the question of whether a rest was needed.  Andromeda declared, "Very well, then.  Onward we go."

OOC: moving on to 26b... unless Jhank finds the secret door, then we check that out first ;P
