Re: The Autopsy (Amara and Dr. Gourdie)

Dr. Amara Perez:
Great! A screw-up like that right in front of Dr. Gourdie. Fortunately, there probably isn't much more need to examine the heart. Interesting that it isn't totally dry, though. With even removal of fluid from the bone marrow, it's surprising any blood remains near the heart at all. She takes what little blood samples she can. Then she can check lower down, needing a urine sample but expecting to find none.

14:59, Today: Dr. Amara Perez rolled 87 using 1d100.  Medicine < 70, autopsy roll 12.

As you suspected, there is no urine.

The corpse is not _completely_ desiccated. There is a residual amount of liquid. From what you've seen so far (not having checked, for instance, cerebrospinal fluid), you can say that maybe 95% of liquid is gone.

if you want to, you can make an Idea roll here, for something that you didn't ask about specifically but might logically have noticed.

Yes. I think they stopped calling it an Idea roll in 7e.

The hole in the chest is very regular all the way down. There seems to be no tearing of tissue, at least on the scale that which would be visible to the naked eye, as would be the case with any kind of cutting implement you know of (except maybe a surgical laser). (For instance, if you cut with a blade, it catches on whatever it is cutting and tears it unevenly as the material -- in the case, muscle -- resists the cutting action.) Instead, the cut seems completely even and regular.

Amara examines the hole more closely, using magnification. Maybe there are tears she cannot see. Most lasers would burn, though excimer lasers wouldn't.

17:35, Today: Dr. Amara Perez rolled 65 using 1d100.  Medicine < 70, autopsy roll 13.

You can't stick a microscope into the hole, but you can take a sample of the side and stick it under a microscope (you have both optical and electron variants at your disposal).

Re: The Autopsy (Amara and Dr. Gourdie)

No other magnification (e.g. magnifying glasses mounted like glasses or visors, or even a hand-held glass) for direct examination first? She's taking samples from the body anyway, so taking a sample to the microscopes is fine. She starts with the optical microscope rather than the electron microscope, though. She can move on afterward, but seeing for herself and in color first is preferable.

You could use magnifying lenses, but you have the microscopes right there, so...

(You already made the roll for this.)

You take a sample out of the side of the hole and put it on the microscope. You peer through the lens.

The tissue is sharply cut. SHARPLY. There are no signs of tearing, even under a microscope (at least at this enlargement).

There is some kind of blue substance visible on the tissue. At this enlargement, just little blue spots.

Re: The Autopsy (Amara and Dr. Gourdie)

Amara asks her peer, "Have you seen this before? The blue spots?" She steps back from the microscope, hoping Dr. Gourdie might actually participate.

Afterward, before she switches to the electron microscope, Amara tries to get a sample of the blue substance with a swab. That might take a little while to confirm she's got it.

09:31, Today: Dr. Amara Perez rolled 27 using 1d100.  Medicine < 70, autopsy roll 14.

Then she moves the tissue over to the electron microscope to see more about how sharp the cut is an what form these blue dots have.

09:32, Today: Dr. Amara Perez rolled 84 using 1d100.  Medicine < 70, autopsy roll 15.

Re: The Autopsy (Amara and Dr. Gourdie)

Gourdie hurrumphs, but comes over and looks in the optical microscope.

"Ah... what is this? I didn't see this before. Must not have been there."

You examine the material under the electron microscope.

The cut is veeeeeery sharp. It looks sheer, with no tearing, even at this resolution!

Under the electron microscope, the blue material looks to have the form of little triangles, which seem to move around and vibrate.

Gourdie says, increasing the magnification on the optical microscope,

"This looks organic, like some kind of microbe -- but with no cell structure!"

OOC: give me a Psychology roll. Also, do you keep looking through the electron microscope? If so, give me a Spot Hidden.

"With the little bits of motion, a microbe makes sense. But you have a good point about the lack of structure. We'll see what else we can find out..."

Amara spends some time moving things around and checking repeatedly, hoping to get one of these things under the electron microscope.

Indeed, whatever the substance is -- which resolves into little triangles under an electron microscope -- it does not seem to have cell walls. It's very strange.

Gourdie says, "we should send this to the FBI labs. And maybe see if their crime database has any record of this whatever-it-is appearing in other crimes."

OOC: given the failures on those rolls, that's it.

"Yes, I agree with you. I got a sample of them on that swab." She indicates the swab she used earlier, now sealed up.

OOC: I think it's just the brain that remains, though she certainly may have missed something. The exterior has been examined. Internals have been examined, weighed, and sampled.

Closing in on the end of this bizarre autopsy, Amara moves on to the head to take a look at what has happened inside of it. Bzzz.

11:43, Today: Dr. Amara Perez rolled 13 using 1d100.  Medicine < 70, autopsy roll 16.

The brain is also desiccated. In fact, there seems to be almost no cerebral-spinal fluid.

Do you end the autopsy, or is there anything else that you want to look at?

Feel free to make an Int roll for a clue.

Check under the nails. If she fought the attacker, there may be tissue there as she scratched him.

Amara checks the fingernails again, realizing she missed them. But with her current knowledge, she also takes a look at anything she finds under microscopes to see if there is more of that blue stuff.

Since the roll failed, nuthin'.

Since you have spent a few hours here in game time, it's about 2 pm. You can get some lunch and do whatever you want.

Dr. Gourdie is very interested in this blue material and wants to send it to the FEDs for analysis, as well as ask them to do a search on previous crimes in which this material may have turned up. Do you let him do this?

Amara is in total agreement with Dr. Gourdie here. Whatever it is needs much better equipment than the two of them have, and they don't have the breadth of records the FBI does. She helps him pack up samples for the FBI.

You got it.

It will take some time for results to come back, of course.

"Thank you Dr. Gourdie. I need to check in with the rest of the team now."

Amara gets out of her scrubs and stuff and cleans up. Then she calls Vinnie, as he seems to be the team leader even if she's acting more independently at the moment.

OOC: I figure where she heads next will depend on what Vinnie says. I'm not sure where we are in time compared to each other, either.

Vinnie is on the phone in his thread. :) So after he's off said phone you can talk to him.

Or just discuss plans out of character in OOC.
