Festival of Mutato (0.0.1)

OOC: This is the opening thread of the game, meant to get the players back and posting so that everyone from all walks of life can get together.

There are 500 25 hour "days" in a Galactic Year, split into 25 day "months" (composed of 5 day "weeks". As Influx has no planet, the ringworld abides solely by Galactic Time (GT).

From the 11th day of the 11th month to the 16th day of the 11th month is the only holiday the Necroforged officially observe. During those 5 days, there is no work. Only the essential jobs remain running.

Everyone else is invited to the Leisure District where the entire sector becomes a bustling festival. Exotic foods, stands, plays, and every other imaginable diversion is on display. Stands are only open for half days, alternating so that those working the stalls might also partake. Each stall is also required to show how each item is made or done.

It is a festival of teaching, dedicated to Sariel, a god that the Necroforged do not worship, but who's holiday they still uphold. It is the only time anyone will ever see a Necroforged relaxing.

Paper lanterns fill the sky with streamers and confetti. Food and vendors of all descriptions fill the streets as the sounds of an energetic crowd bring the massive buildings to life.

Festival of Mutato (0.0.1)

It was a festival of creation so Jo'n knew exactly where he wanted to be. The Alvari was dressed in his best clothing for fighting which looked something more that would be worn to a combat gym of some kind. His target would be whoever was big, bad, and could teach him how to craft even better violence. Fighting was his way of life even if he wasn't great at it. But you don't get better if you don't seek to learn!

Rak'had had taken this time to go to town for the festival.  He knew there were plenty of goods that would be sold cheaper now, and there was a chance to seek out new clients.  Standing at 7' tall, and weighing near three hundred pounds, he was a powerfully build Tyger.  Though heavily muscled, his body moves with an unnerving lithe and fluid grace.  Covered in black stripped white fur, he was an imposing sight.  Dressed in black cargo pants, a heavy leath belt with two pronged buckle, and multiple gear pouches, a pair of crossed black nylon bandoleers, and a dark brown range coat with a double mantle, the outer one of which can become a hood.  He stood out as out of place at any other time.  Even during the festival he drew infrequent stares from bypasses.

Jo'n's target would be the exhibition matches. Nearly all of the people from the Agricultural district have come to the Festival to show off and recruit. Nearly every fighter in Threshold will be here. The Necroforged seldom participate but a few of them could be seen in the crowd, watching and munching on snacks.

Meanwhile, Rak'had would be headed to the discount vendors. It was the place where people bought overstock from other stores to sell at discount prices. They were teaching the "art of haggling" and so were allowed to set up stalls under a loophole in the Necroforged rules (one that they had never bothered to close).

It wasn't that Ruk didn't appreciate all the Necroforged had done, but for someone working odd jobs to scrape by the festival did more harm than good.  The best he could manage was doing small jobs for a few venders he knew in exchange for an earning more than he would have made sitting at home.  It was a conceptual loophole; the stalls were allowed to work, so they should be allowed to employ others.  His other option was to toss down a hat and try to entertain some coins, though that wasn't his first option.  That tended to draw too much attention without enough payout.  As is, he tried not to linger in any one place for too long, and kept one eye over his shoulder for anyone following him.

Jo'n went straight up to whoever seemed like they ran the various fights. He stood strong and had an ear-to-ear smile. "Sorry to bother you, but as my health is not what it should be I'm only really good for one fight. I'd like to get my backside kicked by the strongest thing or person you have." He stuck a thumb to his chest. "The metal men that run things don't take it very well when I go after them. So why not here?"

The man who seemed to be in charge of the fights was a large, barrel-chested Gorm with a lion's mane and an open leather vest and baggy shorts. "Well, there's lots of speculation on who's the best. All the strongest fighters from all the different schools are here... though, if you're looking for last year's martial arts champ, he's over there signing autographs."

He pointed over to a middle-aged Badger Gorm. Badger Gorm were rare and known for their unbridled aggression. However, he seemed to be smiling and signing autographs for his fans.

Ruk found himself working at one of the "overstock" shops, minding it for the half day that the owner was required to be off to enjoy the festival. In order to work the shop, he needed to at least *pretend* to know how to haggle.

Haggling.  That was hardly a difficult way to make money.  Have a minimum price set, upsell the client, split the difference with the vender.  Not a tricky task for a kid of the streets.

Except that Ruk was too preoccupied.  Way too preoccupied.  Any customer who stared at him a little too intently made Ruk worry they might be seconds from leaping the stall and trying to go for something not on the market.  Half as often as not, Ruk ended up getting out-haggled, and needing to bridge the gap out of his own pocket.

The young fighter gave the lion man a thumbs up and bounded away. Jo'n ran over to the crowd jumping up periodically.

Boing, "Test of strength?" Boing, "Test of strength?" Boing, "Test of strength?" Boing, "Test of strength?" Boing, "Test of strength?" Boing, "Test of strength?" Boing, "Test of strength?" Boing, "Test of strength?"

The avian Gorm glanced over at what he assumed was a relative.  A distant relative, judging by animal archetype as well as whatever genes had put over a foot of height between them.  If he could secure at least one sale for the metalworker, maybe he'd still have a chance to redeem his poor performance thus far.  And, at least, the tiger seemed more focused on the wares than Ruk himself; that was already a good start.

"Oiyo; pots and pans, or more knifes and swords?"  He asked the tiger-morph, hopping from behind the wooden sales counter to sitting atop it.  At least that brought their eyes more to a level.  Even with his attention on Rak'had, Ruk kept a cautious eye at the door.

"Show me your knives.". He says, his voice deep and rich like the scent of pine in the winter.  He gazes down at the raven-kin, more human than not.  Giving the avian-bred his attention for the moment.

"Cooking or...guessing not.  Here; I'll show you."  Ruk rolled backwards off the wooden counter and onto his feet.  With a grunt, he lugged a case from the floor and onto the counter.  Wooden doors clicked open to reveal neat rows of gleaming metal.  Glancing up, Ruk gestured at the combat selection with one hand.  "If none of these suits your liking, there's another case or so before we start hitting swords."

While the two Gorm haggled over blades, Jo'n had chosen to try and pick a fight with the champ.

The Badger Gorm looked up from signing the t-shirt of a young human child and chuckled. "Looks like you're just rarin' to go. Yanno what? Sure, why not. That's the whole point of this festival, isn't it?"

There were cheers from the fans as the badger man stepped into the arena, taking off his shirt to reveal countless scars beneath. "Garun!" "Garun!" "Garun!"

"Alright kid, ready when you are."

Jo'n smiled, "In a straight-out fight you would rip me limb from limb. But with titan slayer, now that is a bit of fun!" His heels raised up until his feet hit a Plantar flexion position. Being on your heels was a weak point as you could be rolled back by treads or wheels.

Knees bent to allow for spring and flex.

One arm behind him bent to allow full range of motion in half the distance.

Assault arm forward with an open palm facing the target.

He bounded forward-looking to lock hand and hand with the badger. Well-bounded was the wrong word. He was walking as if the floor was made of rice paper and would fail him if he stepped to hard.

But he held up both hands to lock up.

Jo'n ran forward, expecting to lock hands. What he found instead was a clawed hand on his wrist a couple of light touches on his chest, the feeling of his feet leaving the mat... and he woke up sometime later with a wet blanket over his face.

------

While Ruk and Rak'had were bartering, a Lion Gorm in baggy pants and an open vest brought an unconscious Alvari boy (man) into a shady spot nearby, covering his face with a moist towel and leaving him there. He woke up shortly after.

Rak'had inspects the knives, taking particular interest in the practical, survival oriented large knives.  Eventually he selected one, and set it aside.  "Now show me what you have in long rifles.". He says to the young avian, his voice almost a purr.

"This is more of a metal worker, not a weapon-...."  Ruk trailed off, his eyes drifting off the very large tiger and on to the figure that might have just been left for dead in the gutter.  "Oi!"  He called out in protest, leaping onto the counter again.

Yellow avian eyes flashed to Rak'had for a moment.  "I'll be right back, once I make sure a body didn't just get dropped off in broad daylight.  Stick around."  With a flap of his wings, Ruk made it over to the unconscious Alvari just in time to see the figure stir.  A few backdrafts halted his momentum casually and gracefully, and the Corvid Gorm simply set a foot down while momentum of flight hit equilibrium gravitational pull.  "Oh, good; you're alive.  Any idea how you came to be dumped in the street?"

"...Ruk."  The avian replied slowly after a moment of internal deliberation.  "Yes, well, as they say; always trust a gorm to surprise you.  Anyhow, if you're not dead, I'll be back over there."

Ruk's wing swept out as he spun gracefully on one antisyndactyl foot, and trod back to the shot.  He offered an apologetic smile to the tiger-morph.  "Apologies; a dead body would have been bad for business.  Where were we?  Ah; yes; one long-bladed knife.  Can I interest you in our collection of long blades as well?"

Jo'n slumped his way to the same stall and sat down next to it, twisting his shoulder until there was a meaty pop and snap. He was going to have to force a rematch at some point. Perhaps next time he would throw a rock first... Plots and plans. Plots and plans.
