Re: Table Talk

You can select your spells before the game.

I'll definitely think about ways for the students to get to Ilvermorny; like Isaac said, it'll be a good way to introduce your characters. I'm hoping I can come up with something that's different from a train, so that we can create a better distinction between Ilvermorny and Hogwarts.

Buses? There could be a handful of buses spread out equal distance in a few directions from the school and each student takes the floo network to the bus closest to where they live.

Re: Table Talk

BTW, how do you all feel about the uniforms? Personally, I'm not too partial to the blue-and-cranberry color palette, so I was thinking of making it more like the Hogwarts uniforms with their separate colors.

Horned Serpent would be blue, Wampus would be cranberry, and then we'd have to decide what the colors of Thunderbird and Pukwudgie are.

I also have this inkling of an idea for adding some sort of Native American or Irish twist to the type of ensemble, like instead of or on top of a robe it would have something else.

Re: Table Talk

I like the idea of more of a modern school uniform rather than robes.  As for colors, I'm fine with that.

For native american, how about sashes?  Many of the Eastern Woodland Tribes wore wide, finger woven sashes and belts with their buckskin clothing before the europeans arrived  The fancy or ceremonial sashes would be decorated with beads and shells.  They adapted them to work with the wool, linen and cotton clothing that they traded for from the colonists.

We could go with either each house has their own sash colors and patterns, or there is just one for the whole school and the uniforms are different for each house.

Re: Table Talk

The equipment section seems to be incomplete.  Is is safe to assume we have all the necessary school equipment and books?

Re: Table Talk

Yes. I'm still a little unsure how the economy and purchasing stuff with gold works, but most of your purchased equipment would be adventuring gear and magical items like potions.

Re: Table Talk

hmmm here's an idea....with the sash thing, perhaps the Sashes serve more then one purpose, ex. your grade on assignments gives you a bead that is a certain color, extra credit projects give you a bead or something, what grade you are is signified by how many rows of beads you have?  what do you guys think?

Re: Table Talk

Well to give you an idea of what everyday wear sashes look like here are some links:

With these kinds of sashes maybe pins, or badges like the boy/girl scouts use?

Re: Table Talk

Sashes could show what year of school you’re in and titles like prefect.

Re: Table Talk

I'm liking this idea too. I think all the uniforms should be the same and the sashes are used to show all the differences. Each house's sash is their house's color. Each year could add a stripe to the edge of the sash to show what year the student is. There could be special badges to show things like the equivalent of prefects or team captains for sports. The mentioned beads could maybe represent house points earned. There could be badges for specific accomplishments.

Re: Table Talk

Is it okay if we put misc. stuff like yarn and crocheting supplies in our equipment area?  I figure she makes little things for a friend's Etsy shop and gets a cut of the money made off of them.  Not a lot, just pocket money.

In reply to Verity Sheridan (msg # 44):

We're first years. I already asked.

I left my equipment blank. Aside from our uniforms, wands, and school books I wasn't sure what  we'd have since the supplement doesn't cover that much. Also, since this is effectively a boarding school they probably have rules about what we can and can't bring with us so there's that to consider too.

Re: Table Talk

Scarves it is, then. Someone mentioned that they'd like to see something more modern than robes? I'd like to hear some examples of alternatives.

I'll let you have yarn and crocheting supplies, but anything more proficient than that would start to look like Weaver's Tools, which you would have to have proficiency in and have purchased. You'll be able to make ability checks in your spare time for that little bit of extra cash, I guess, unless you just wanted it to be a narrative thing.

Someone (who didn't happen to make it) mentioned that the post-Voldemort era would be somewhere from the late 90's to the early 2000's; was there a specific year you needed it to be, or is that close enough?

You know, I think something we can do for starting equipment is to have you guys roll for starting good from the equipment section of the PHB, and then to purchase anything you might find from the very same equipment section. Like Seamus said, certain things would definitely be off-limits (like basic poison and vials of acid), and there would also be things in there that simply would exist in this world, such as holy symbols and druidic foci. You don't have to purchase your wands, you'll get them once you get to Ilvermorny.

Re: Table Talk

Voldemort's defeat by Harry Potter is on May 2nd 1998.

The main reason I want to know what the date is is for pop culture relevance.  What songs are Verity listening to?  What movies or TV shows has she obsessed over.  Things like that.  She is a muggleborn after all.  ;)

I am fine with just leaving her crocheting as a narrative thing.  I figured it would be how she was able to afford any extras she might have besides her school supplies.  I looked on Etsy, some of the tiny crocheted dolls go for 12-25 bucks!  Of course the year might mean she's selling them somewhere else because I don't think Etsy was around in 1998.  LOL

As for what we roll for starting cash, use Sorcerer or Wizard for how much we roll for?  :D

Re: Table Talk

For starting gold, we'll use the Wizard dice pool; it's got one more dice. Remember that gp is called Galleons, and if you purchase anything that breaks a Galleon down it turns into Sickles, and then into Knuts.

Do we start with a potioneer's kit or do we need to buy one if we want to start with one. There is this in the supplement :
"A potioneer's kit is included in the Hogwarts shopping list,
so every student should have one."

If we have to buy one, what is the price because that's not listed in the supplement.

Re: Table Talk

Judging by the wording of that, I'd say you'll need to purchase it. We can just use the price for Alchemist's Supplies, since it's the closest analogue. Looking it up, that would be... 50 Galleons, damn. Well, it's not like the Potions classroom won't have one you can use for free, so it's not that urgent.

BTW, I'm nearly ready with the introductory adventure. I've just gotta flesh out the details of a few more NPCs so that you can actually interact with some of them on the journey.

There goes most of my galleons. Seamus has a keen interest in potions for... reasons. :)

What are the school's rules about bringing muggle tech to school? Smart phones, handheld game consoles, laptops, tablets, mp3 players, etc. Semi-related, what year is it? Have we narrowed that down beyond post-Voldemort? Important to know for pop-culture and tech references.
