From the journal, I got the impression that he was adventuring and communicating with his sister at home. The range on message (100ft + 10ft/level) suggests that not only is that not the case, but that she was relatively nearby. Right now we see no method to get down to the lower level; what if she's down below? In other words, he'd come to this location and use message to talk to his sister who remained on the lower level for some reason? Just a thought based on what we know so far...

I will try to knock out a post tonight as it is YE time which is our most swamped time of year.

I don't know if we have anything resembling a rogue but if we are worried about trapped doors I can always open it when the party is like 15 feet back or something.
