The world as we know it

The ancient sleeth historian walks into the small run down room. It's once greenish scales were now on their way to grey, but they still held a tint of green if the light hit them just right. The only way to tell the sexes of a sleeth apart was their scales, and her muted tones exposed her. Her breath was heavy as she finally made it back to her favorite corner. This library she'd built with her own hands, at first just for her, but it has eventually become a place of sharing. Her favorite corner held several bookshelves as well as a roaring fire that caused the other humans that would visit to sweat, but she barely felt it anymore. As with other days, a group of small children waited for her to tell her stories. Stories of long ago, some real, some fanciful, but all she weaved into lessons that the little ones would carry for their rest of their lives. The is was a new class, if that's what one wanted to call it, as the older children had left to start working their parents' farms, or joined some alliance or mercenary group, or whatever else they had decided to do as their occupation.

As with all new classes, she started at the beginning.

"Many centuries ago, the ancients had built many wonders. They harnessed energy to power lights, cooking, even to control the very temperature inside their homes. At first it was a dirty business, but they got better and better at it until they were able to not only harness the energy that is in every particle of everything you see and can't see around you, but they could harness the power of the sun and even the very power of gravity that keeps us from flying off into space. During this time, they had also learned how to change their very forms to create what we call elves, dwarves, and all the other demi human races to help the humans to be better equipped at what they did for a living. Back then, they would be able to be changed back and forth with a whim, but now, that is a secret lost to time."

The children sat listening with their eyes wide. A little girl who had a stripe of white fur running up her forehead from her black nose asked, "Is that when they destroyed themselves?"

"Not yet, but very soon." Going back to her story she says, "Where was I? Oh yes, once they had figured out how to control gravity, they set their eyes on the outer planets and the stars. While they were exploring and settling off planet, one scientist was trying to pierce the idea of other dimensions. While he never succeeded in this, he did find something else extraordinary. Ever since man was young, there had been stories of other beings and of magic. This scientist had found out that the old stories were true and that magic was a real thing as well as other terrible beasts. Now with magic in the world, human society went through a great upheaval. The Ancients' machines and summations about how the world worked started to breakdown. Those that were weak, suddenly saw their chance to gain recognition. Those whom were strong, were thrown into chaos. Everything just collapsed and no one today knows exactly why."

"It's been at least 400 years since the great collapse and now men are back on the rise. They have sectioned themselves off again into bands and alliances for good or ill. Either way, it's in Man's nature to do so."

The world as we know it - Glossary of Terms

Altered Ones: This name refers to the general class of mutated humans. Any human that has a single mutation is an Altered One, or one of the Altered.

Ancients: The people who lived before the cataclysm.

Artifacts: The generic terms for objects built before the cataclysm by the ancients. They are considered to hold great power, and even the most worthless can be bought and sold for a handsome price.

Bones of the Giants: The metal frame of an ancient building. Frequently all that is left by now.

Cataclysm: Long ago (several centuries), the ancients fought a war with devastating machines of mass destruction. This was the cataclysm. It is also known as the Time of Troubles or the Time of Terror, and it cast the world into barbarism, from which it is only now beginning to rise out of.

Cloud Towers: This name refers to any large building, particularly skyscrapers, left standing from the time of the ancients.

The Cures/Legacy: Radiation is something that cannot be seen. It is the invisible source of radiation sickness. Therefore, the inhabitants of the new world do not have a term for it.They do, however, have one for the resulting illness. It is called the Legacy, or the Curse. People do know that the Legacy is the result of the great weapons of destruction used by the ancients.

Domars: This is what money is called on Gamma Terra. Gold pieces are what we would know as nickels. A platinum piece is our quarter, a silver is our dime, and a copper piece is our penny. GPs are usually called domes, PPs are called larges, SPs are called smalls, and CPs are called columns.

Gren Cloth: This is a fabric that has a wooden texture, but can be worked and acts like hardened leather that is rumored to be made exclusively by the Grens. It acts as Darkleaf Cloth.

Duralloy: The ancients used a material they called duralloy for many of their artifacts. This super tough metal surpasses any other metal or plastic in resilience, hence it is also referred to as Adamant.

The Glow: The light shed by radioactive areas at night is called the glow. Unfortunately for the characters, it also refers to the light produced by light bulbs. To the inhabitants of new earth, there is little difference between a rock that glows and a piece of metal and glass that glows.

Lightning: This is obviously a common turn for the electrical discharge of a storm. However, everyone believe, correctly, that the ancients were able to enslave this force to do their bidding. Therefore, all electricity is called lightning.

Live Metal: Most self powered machinery is called live metal. In particular, robots and vehicles are given this name. It refers to the appearance of life in a metal object. The machine moves, walks, talks, etc, so therefore it must be alive.

New Animals/Animen: This is a term for mutated animal characters. Any animal that is obviously intelligent is a new animal.

Nograin: Plastic is probably the most perplexing material left behind by the ancients. It bears no resemblance to any other naturally occurring material. It has some of the attributes of wood, ceramic, and resin. Most notably, it is a material with no grain.

Sky Chariot: A common term for airplane or any other flying craft. Roaring condor is another term used, emphasizing the noise of the engines.

Softrock: Concrete crumbles and deteriorates much faster than natural stone, hence the term for softrock.

Sun Bolt: this is the name coined for blasts of energy. Usually it refers to visible beams, such as those produced by plasma guns, conversion beamers and the like. Strangely, laser beams are rarely given this name, probably because the beam itself is invisible.

True Men: These are the descendents of the ancients, as known as pure strain humans.

Ultralight Silver: This silvered metal is a wonder to the smithies of the new world. It is as hard as steel, but much lighter. In game terms, this is mithril.

The world as we know it - Class Guide

Important thoughts on the classes.

Since there are no real gods to follow, thought this doesn't stop worshiping something, this leaves clerics and inquisitors to pick their spheres of influence using the normal rules. That said, in this world there are no outer planes and thus any subdomain that draws on them just don't work. This would include subdomains like Azata, Psychopomp, Devil, etc. Though these creatures do exist, they are natural creatures and not otherworldly.

Spells that talk about other dimensions, with the ethereal being the only exception, don't work as normally described. When calling something from other planes, these creatures are just either manifested from raw materials around the caster or teleported in from another location. When they are destroyed or the spell in question ends, they return to dust or where they came from without injury. The people of earth might think that these creatures are demons, devils, or angels, but instead they are plucked from another planet or created from the caster's own mind.

The world as we know it - Town of Meal Environs

This small village rests just off the beaten trail between several occupied lands. To the north, Knights of Genetic Purity control the City State of Powhat. About a day and a half ride to the east is the ancient ruins of Rich Man that is controlled by Radioactivists. To the south and west, the Bonparists controll a large area that stretches for several miles. An elven enclave also sits only an hours travel by foot to the direct east between Rich Man and the town, but slightly off the beaten path that leads directly to the Ancient City.

The town's chief export is lumber and animal skins, but it has fallen on rough times recently. The ruins of a cloud tower have recently been located deep within the woods and something has taken residence inside of it. Stories of strange beasts lurking in its depths has the town on edge.

The world as we know it - The Winged Elves Airy

The winged elves of the area have a dark secret that the town hasn't quiet figured out. From time to time a young person will disappear from the town of Meal. The young person will be gone for many years only to have a new winged and feathered elf looking suspiciously like the missing person. The elves themselves have denied any wrongdoing, but the rumor still flies that somehow the missing children are transformed by the elves. Things got so heated 5 winters ago, that the town even attempted to attack the small elf village, but, given the elves could just fly away, nothing became of it. So now the two locations are in stuck a bitter peace, one accusing the other of nefarious actions, the other able to escape any attack and remaining secretive.

The world as we know it - Beastiary

This is a list of the flora and fauna of Gamma Terra that is common knowledge. Anything the party learns about each one through Knowledge checks in the future, will be added here.

Ark - A large race of hound headed humanoids that have the ability to leech the life from other living beings.
Badders - Animen that resemble badgers and are three times as vicious, if that's even possible.
Big Walker - Huge horse like creatures that are prized for their strength, hardiness, and fearless demeanor. They are more likely to be found in the hands of a Knight of Genetic Purity than any other. It is said that the Knights breed them exclusively.
Blood Birds - Nasty child sized ravens are the scavengers of the irradiated wastes.
Brown Beggar - Also known as Dabbers, these small racoon like animen are well known for their ability to get into secure places and strong natural mental abilities.
Centisteed - Rare horses that have mutated to have 2-3 dozen legs.
Dark Emperors - Double the size of a regular man, these vulture like animen are feared for their mind bending abilities.
Gamma Moths - Large man sized moths that are revered by the Radioactivists
Green Hissers - Mutated cousins of the crocodile family, these gators have long tentacles that sprout off it's head. These tentacles are known to be poisonous. The amount of green hissers in any area is determined by how big the body of water is that they live in. Mating season, however, will increase these numbers for a sort time.
Grens - A race of green skinned humans that very very few have actually seen. They are rumored to be able to copy ancient technology, but made from plant matter.
Hoops - Rabbit animen who love to eat other humanoids and can turn metal into rubber with a touch
Hopper - Horse sized rabbits that are quickly outpacing normal horses in number. Hoops will attack any non Hoop who has one, so this makes them less than desirable except in the strongest of communities.
Orlen - Monstrous two headed, four armed giants that can easily destroy lesser beings with their huge swords and mastery of rifles of their own make.
Pineto - Horse like cacti creatures that can easily travers the driest of areas in the irradiated wastes, but tend to wilt and die quickly in more humid areas.
Rakox - Large bison whose heads are heavily plated with bone and are extremely territorial. However, their meat is highly praised.
Sleeth - A race of reptilian historians that have been rumored to be around since the fall of humanity.
Terrorbird - Man sized birds that have the coloration of sparrows that strike fear in even the most stout mutants.

The world as we know it - UPBs

Starfinder calls these Universal Polimer Base items, but these things are not the same in this regard. While they can be used to build other things, they are extremely bulky as they are old items from before the fall. Think of these as being a toaster, a busted computer, a hair dryer, a stack of moldy plywood, or any of the common goods that can be found laying around in and around your home or place of work. They don't serve their original function anymore, but can be changed into weapons, armor, or items.
