Does anyone want to start the game already knowing each other to some degree, or not?

As we are forming a coterie we probs know of each other by reputation, especially if we are all ancillae and have been in shadow hold a little while. Asha has been here a few decades now. May have heard of me as I am a veteran of the sect wars (status 3 with anarchs) so my name might have come up at some point.

Feel free to read backstory if you like but the bullet is that Asha is a Gangrel Anarch and a thief who is often seen in the company of a large German shepherd named Baxter. Might have also heard it said she is sometimes a saboteur but nothing has yet been proven :D

Hello! I'm extremely new to the game (made my first character last night) so if anyone feels that I'm making any crucial missteps that my character wouldn't be making let me know. Looking forward to getting to know all of you!

We're happy to help you,much as we can.  You know your character better than we do.  As far as the "realities" of being a Vampire, or the setting of World of Darkness, I'm sure we can all lend a hand.  In my case, there's been a good deal of change since I started playing.  :)

If you're not counting the bloodlines video game then not really. I played a "VTM Game" where the gm had players roll a d20 to determine generation at character creation so our party started with a 4th gen, a 10th gen, a thin-blood, and a ghoul. It kinda fell apart pretty quickly.

I still enjoy bloodlines and it does teach a lot of the basics of the culture and factions etc but yeah the game has changed since earlier inceptions. Was surprised to find gangrel had left cam as whn I first played they were basically the camarilla hounds and first line against the werewolves whenever we played haha

I was mostly joking about playing Sabbat.  Particularly given what I understand of the game set up, and the story in the books.  I'm fine with a multi-sect Coterie.  Given that Rook is an Anarch leaning Independent Gangrel, having the Coterie be Anarch, Camerilla, or mix means nothing to him.

Asha doesn't mind working with camarilla so long as it doesn't directly hurt the anarchs to do so.

Yes, most certainly. In fact I think there might even be an Advantage or Flaw that exists specifically for that reason if that's your thing. Even though some Kindred dont outright state their Clan, unless they are actively hiding it it can be assumed what lineage they come from based on what they look and act like.

Many of the Coterie have a purpose or set goal; "Protect thing" "Do thing" ect. What exactly does a Plumarie do? The description seems to imply that it's the equivalent of a bunch of goth kids who just hang out, that's not the case right?

thats exactly the case, it a coterie that is formed when the kindred have similar interests so could be music styles , hobbies etc etc they all enjoy doing. not all coteries form with a specific mission or duty so several reflect this. like nomads for example, literally for a coterie that likes to travel from place to place. you are even allowed to invent a brand new coterie if you want to and as Nef said you can have more than one.

Huh thanks. I guess I always imagined the vamp gangs to be more or less allies of convenience. Nice to know they just hang out sometimes.

some if not most certainly are. some coteries are formed by order of the prince for specific tasks and can be purley political or strategic in nature. if largely increasing numbers of werewolves or sabbat are seen gathering nearby then anarchs and camarilla may choose to send members to form a single coterie to invesitgate, even if only to keep an eye on the other faction and make sure they are not involved with the threat somehow. If you can imagine a reaosna  group of vampires might work together or hangout then you can make a coterie from it :D

Are these locations in the book? If not is there something i could read to get an idea of where and what things are such as Elysium?

The location of an Elysium can vary from area to area.  The term Elysium is a designation of a "safe" space for Vampires of the Camerilla.  It generally means that vampires within it cannot use Disciplines on each other, can not attack each other physically.  It is a place to meet, and usually politic.  Trash talking and insults are frequently permitted,but that can vary with the Prince in charge.

Just to add to Rooks explaantion, ususally there are periodic meetings where camarilla may be expected to make an appearance as sometimes orders and new business is often given out by th local prince etc. sometimes they are compulsary but its usually good form to attend.

Each location thread as a description of what it is, but not where. I have yet to get a map drawn up, as I am a rather atrocious artist.

Well i imagine the domain we are taking over has been carved out and gifted by one or more factions. I was goint to use a coterie dot for haven as it makes sense to have an actual base of operations so anyone can choose to upgrade the quality of this with their coteries dots if they like. i still have an advantage dot spae to use as well.

You're also free to use my 3 dot haven as a base of operations if you wanted to. I wasn't sure if coterie dots could go into personal advancements (I figured not).

no dont beleivew you can use coterie dots for personal things. not sure how it works with using someone elses haven for the coterie, supposse it could work provided its within the domain. If that is the case i will not use the o for haven. what does everyone else reckon?

My character, being a "pacifist" is probably going to be leaning heavily into topor. Would there be any unforseen consequences (other than potential escape) for capturing vamps instead of killing them and having them face trial via prince or whatever?

Other than risk of death to us for trying to take them by torpor?  To be fair if they enter torpor it will take them ages to wake up without assistance. Beleive it's based on humanity score with humanity 7 beings days to weeks etc and the less humanity the longer it takes until you cannot awaken without being fed vitae.

Just hard to do if they are a strong fighter or have really good awareness. Imagine the preference would be to capture alive for public judgement. Another risk maybe if thus have a coterie and if they know they are alive they might try to spring them out.

St in this game are wooden bolts counted as stakes or is it purely big peice of wood shoved in the heart? Some St's run it differently so checking to see if their is a way to do it at range in your world haha

Worse case close your eyes and cover your ears safe in the knowledge that they might have accide tly chopped their own head off ;)

Gotcha, I just didn't know if forcing topor would be considered more horrific among the kindred or something. Iirc once we deal enough damage to topor a vamp, the rest should be simple, as a stake to the heart keeps them in that state indefinitely. Our only worries would be from outside forces trying to spring them out before trial.

Obviously this is a coterie, so my word isn't law, but I'll definitely be trying to de-escalate and keep things as non-lethal as inhumanly possible, I fully expect and understand that it may not be a priority for the rest of yall (both in an out of character) and I'm lookin forward to those disagreements and compromise, or lack thereof, in game.

Thats probabaly a good role to take, tempers can flare with Gangrel, or at least Asha's does during a fight. One of the perks of being inherently in touch with the beast. Feel that you and rook going to be working hard to keep everyone smooth and happy eith each other haha

I think most would choose torpor to true death as it more like being in a coma, vampires fear it because they literally become powerless but once again probabaly preferable to true death for some as there is a chance you can ewake up. Depends on the kindred i suppose :D

Asha doesn't care for humans all that much, even when she was one. she feeds on animals because of her general disdain for humans and because it allows her to be in touch with the beast more safely. The idea of drinking from humans is quite disgusting to her, like asking a sommelior to drink wine vinegar.

I wonder, how much of this information would we share with each other? How open are your characters? The Reverend is like a library; none of the information is hidden (from kindred) but you certainly have to look for it to find it.

It wouldn't particular be something she hid so if you asked she might say or she might tell you to fuck off and mind your own business. Depends what mood you catch her in XD.

Anyone who knows of her would know she is often accompanied by her dog Baxter. Locals or anyone in shadowhold last 20 yeasrs will probabaly know she used to be camarilla until the Gangrel left en masse and then she joined up with the Anarchs and made a name for herself there during the sect wars.

If you have knowledge of the local sect wars you would know she is fairly sneaky when she wants to be and has a nasty habit of using ambush tactics with guns and explosives.

If you have an interest in Anarch hierachies or politics you might know she has a fair amount of influence and respect from the other Anarchs but has no apparent interest in leadership or politics.

Depending on how good of terms Rook is he might know a little of her history as well as general disdain for humans and places she tends to spend her nights in the town.

Hard to say precisely what each person would know so that some broad strokes to go on.

Rook has not exactly made a secret of his claws, so depending upon what one had heard, the evidence of some "problem" being shredded by an "animal" might come to mind.

I see "sect wars" mentioned a lot. Is this common kindred knowledge? If it is, is it in the core book somewhere for me to get an idea of what happened?

I believe masquerade was broken a lot but control over the media helped to cover up the hell out of it haha

If you don't mind me prying, Nefertari, who is your character? Throckett would know very little about all of you guys, considering he's not only relatively new in town, but new to the politics of the kindred. However, I am still curious about her.

Oh! How enigmatic! It seems that we have a few mysterious characters in our coterie.

This would be a question both in and out of character. How exactly does our job work? Are we proactive? Reactive? Is it the kind of job that we should pretty much always expect violence, or are there a lot of "slaps on wrists" so to speak?

I would think that we would be more reactive as our job is to catch masquerade breakers and i doubt we would be held accountable to stop every breach due to our low number. Would likely depend on severity of the breach as well as the orders from the higher ups. generally if the masquerade breach causes mortals to serious question what they saw or made a scene then punishment would likely be death. Minor infractions might carry lighter sentences. We may be expected to remove mortal witnesses if they seem willing to report what they saw etc. that would again depend on precisely what our orders are.

What you may discover is that she is an Tremere of high Status. Most think she is either Ventrue or Toreador.

She is not afraid to show that she is of High Clan and a entrepreneur in many ways.  There may be some hidden claims to parts of the city and she does own a Huge House (mansion)

well the prince will order her killed or she wont, Asha doesn't bow any longer and the prince has no power to actually order Asha to do anything. Asha will play by the rules and maintain masquerade and leave camarilla so long as they leave her alone. If the anarch elders request her assistance she might say yes or she might pack up and leave town :D Asha wouldn't have come at all if she was afraid of dying.

Throckett is going to be a fun character to interact with and can see why Malkavian might be perfect clan to play it right XD

On a side note, is the Prince speaking about Sabbat Gangrel? Or Werewolves? "Mad Dogs" seems a little dehumanizing for kindred.

She's talking about the Sabbat in general, but of course, she's so arrogant, that she doesn't really care.

Asha is assuming sabbat as she mentioned loathsome cousins, it could mean anarchs as well but given present company i feel sabbat is a safer bet this time.

Its generally rare for garou (werewolves) packs to randomly kill humans unless they had some connection to the wyrm or had done somethign to them first. They would be much more likely to atack kindred directly as they considered them abominations to gaia. If it was a garou pack invading then they would likely be considering a all hands on deck to battle approach as they will usually do better in a fight than kindred and can move about during the day as well.

Remember that certain kindred feeding habits *glances in rooks direction* are more violent and could appear as a brutal murder or animal attack as large bite or claw marks on bodies tend to have people assuming an animal must have done it because obviously there no such thigns as vampires and werewolves ;)

Not in my experience at least not this fast! the prince just basically said you can execute Asha if you want and start a war with the Anarchs because she didn't like being questioned XD technically no breach of elysium as sherrifs tend to be exempt but also odd the elders reacted with okay war it is and attacked them first in case luna does choose to kill her??

This all really puts a strain on being part of a Coterie. Could anyone trust Asha now?  My character will not want to do anything with her after witnessing how she spoke to the Prince and made her loose control of the Beast within her.

Yeah I'm with Nefertari (and so is my character) on this, this is why I was negative (maybe apprehensive is a better word) in regards to a mixed sect coterie. Although we managed to figure out why we were all in a coterie despite our differences this just throws all of that out of the window.

she didnt invite asha though, the anarch elders did. Asha was presumably called in because they know she doesn't like sabbat and fought agaisnt them to the point that she gained status amongst kindred for doing so then she got angry when said veteran strongly disagrees with the idea to negotiate with sabbat and questions their decision when their own sherrif is vocally in disagreement with the princes decision XD

As i said if the elders had actually raised the point to discuss with the prince, because remember that she doesn't actually have authority over anarchs, its more of a uneasy begrudging peace, and the cam must have wanted cooperation hence why they invited the anarchs and they in turn invited Asha. Seems odd she chose war rather than just ask the anarach elders politely to control their dog or some such turn of phrase. Asha might argue with her elders but would ultimately obey if they made it a command or said it would be discussed another time.

it just seems odd that theres a potential risk of sabbat invasion so they call together the sects to deal with it and then decides war with anarchs over feeling insulted by a basically homeless ancilla is the appropriate reaction.

That said kindred elders are strange folk at the best of times and if asha dies (which is almost a certainty) then she dies. Can always roll a camarilla character, shame though as i enjoy the bluntness and simplicity of Asha's character haha

I feel like every Ventrue has ambitions to the throne but I wouldn't want to earn it like this. Besides there's really no reason to bargain with the rest of us now, the Anarchs could just kill the Prince and claim the city since it is apparently very easy to dust the sheriff and primogen.

i am honestly as confused and surprised by the development. was expecting to be insta killed and roll new character etc but i guess critical successes do happen sometimes.

seriously wouldnt mind some input because i am honestly not trying to derail anything but the situation keeps getting more complex. suggestions?

like Asha could pump a bullet in prince and flee with the anarchs, presumably since camarilla control the domain they have more power, influence over mortals and stronger forces here than the Anarchs otherwise it would already be an anarch domain. tryign to think of a way to salvage it. Camarilla send a new prince or raise up a primogen and then its the coterie trying to climb the power ladder as essentially the factions wihtin camarilla will have just been upended since a primogen and sherrif are also gone?

What the hell did i wake up to?

It is possible that both the Anarch and Camerilla are both strong enough to hold their own, and be a strong threat in areas where the other is weak.  Which could be the reason that there exists a sort of truce between them, neither can afford to war with the other, as there is no clear victor in such a struggle.  And, if the Sabbat are incroching, they might not be strong enough sepperately to hold them back.
   As far as Sasha goes, it is quite possible that her overreaction in attacking reveals the fact that her grasp on power was weak and tenuous at best.  With her Sheriff and loyal Primogen ashed, and herself now at the mercy of the one she attacked, the remaining Primogen might consider elevating someone else to the position of Prince.  Someone less rash, and more stable.
   I'm good with climbing a power ladder, certainly we have just shown a that individually our members are strong, or at least Asha has.  With a new Prince, options for "work" become more available as others seek to position themselves for power or security.

I do find it a little funny that after a whole monologue about how we have to have faith in each other, everything hit the fan. I'll get a post up later, but just assume that the Reverend stayed back and watched in horror.

He has no ill will towards Asha and would make a mental note not to speak as freely as her around the vampire elders.

I just dont understand how Shadowhold could be under Camarilla rule if taking over was as easy as staging a meeting and immediately ashing the sheriff and the Malkavian Primogen. And all this when we were simply supposed to meet, get introduced and most likely get an assignment or whatever. There isn't really any incentive for the Anarchs to help install a new Prince or spare this one since they are basically already at war with the Camarilla, even more so now that they killed two Kindred. Even more so, why would Richard and/or Nefertari (possibly the Reverend too) have any inclination to stick with this coterie after this spectacle? I didn't want to play in a game where the other PCs could potentially turn into enemies and things could resort to physical combat and even death in the very first scene even. And sure, becoming Prince, Primogen or something else could be very fun and enjoyable, hell it's one of Richard's goals! But, becoming it like this is not fun or enjoyable, it's supposed to feel earned and hard fought, not quite literally given to you. Of course, I can only speak for myself.

I for one am willing to see how this plays out. The Reverend would of course be horrified that things went to shit so quickly, but as no one (that I saw) in the coterie actually did the ashing, it's possible, though unlikely, that we can diffuse the situation and return to a new state of normalcy.

And Richard, I doubt that anyone in our Coterie would be given throne, at least while still remaining a playable character and without being a puppet for the Anarchs.

I agree with most of what you say though argue that there is always a chance that players can become enemies if their goals cross or both are gunning for a single position. As i said i have played mixed before and this has never happened session 1 so don't think its a case of this is why you never mix coterie. I often found them to be the most interesting games as it allowed more varied and interesting reactions to occur.

The rest i agree with and stated above. once again happy to remove ashja and bring in new cammy character as asha is basically persono non grata at this stage regardless what happpens. hell she could even become an enemy later that we have to track down and kill. doesn't bother me as a player.

Just want to discuss what we can do rather than what has happened to try and salvage things. Also another thing to note only the kindred present know will know what actually happened. say the mansion appeared to have been bruined down and sabbat iconagraphy was discovered? its already known sabbat are likely in the area and only sabbat would be crazy enough to attacka  prince and her sherrif?

Well the Reverend wouldn't stand by that, considering he was trying to reason with them in the first place. We could instead make it look like hunters attacked the mansion, leave a few stakes or whatever they use nowadays. It could serve to unite the non-present camarilla and anarchs to possibly solve the Sabbat situation as quickly and non-violent way as possible.

I also don't find this situation all that unbelievable. Didn't Theo Bell do this exact thing? I've been reading up on VTM lore, but I could be wrong.

This is almost excatly what happened except that Theo had planned it and the brujah clan were in support and he killed several princes i beleive at the convention of prague including his own before leading the Brujah to leave the camarilla and join the anarchs.

to be fair i have plenty of dragonfire shells and light ordance grenades etc so it could be staged, might seem odd if they attacked at night however as usually hunters are smart enough to attack in the day.

i assumed this was supossed to be the formation, Asha would not have likely insulted Throckett so much had she actually known and had been working with him.

Emily certainly draws the eye but you won't see much gunslinging, she prefers a gentler touch when solving disputes and often finds she can get by on her lovely  presence alone.

Indeed but i prefer more of an open book about the past less a few details or points left slightly vague. gives a good feel of who the character is and the kidn of life they have led and prevents the urge to do massive exposition dumps IC when you have a whole backstory but no one to tell it to XD

Asha's hid nothing because personality wise she wouldn't care if everyone knew her history and wears it as badge of pride. Emily is a little more conservative but happy to tell her story and generally likes being in the spotlight to an extent.

How long has Emily lived in Shadowhold?

Emily will have been local for a few months. She likely would have visited the casino once or twice and attended court when called. Outside of that she is more likely to be found in one of the nightclubs around the town. She has the 'stunning' merit so she would likely be noticeable if you crossed paths a few times and would often have surrounded herself with mortals. You would also notice her bodyguard standing just to the side where ever she goes.

Nice, she would surely be noticed in the Casino.  There are two different Casinos in Shadowhold.  I hope she visited both.

I only went for Beautiful, taking Stunning might of been a bit too much for a Tremere LOL

Well I don't think the Reverend or Rook cared to take that. So three very nice looking Kindreds in the group who will be good with Social skills.

Actually I did take beautiful lol. I figured that it would help me with convincing people to take up my wacky causes. Sounds like we are a pretty group!

Ill post later today but if the ST wants to move things forward the Reverend would have accepted the cards offered to him with a (understandably)  subdued politeness and stuck around to do priest stuff before heading home.

Rook is average looking.  Easy to disappear into a crowd.  I didn't see Skill modifying merits in the core book.  Did I miss something?

I wasn't too sure how much time would pass. Currently most of the Reverend's dealings are mortal focused; helping out with the community, speaking with other local religious leaders, planning fundraisers, ect. The general idea (I'm not too sure how realistic this is) was that he sorta showed up in Shadowhold, established himself into the mortal community for a couple of years and only then randomly showed up at the Prince's manor in a bit of a daze to pledge allegiance. He's completely removed from, and is fairly ignorant of, vampire politics.

I didn't want to assume that we would be given more than a few days before the next ST update. The Reverend would wait at least a couple of days before reaching out to either Nefertari or Richard, assuming he wasn't approached first.

TLDR; don't take my silence for lack of interest, I am waiting patiently for the next update.

In my experience their tend to be main storylines and personal story lines in vamp masquerade. main story lines tend to deal with the issues and conflicts at large across the domanin and personal story lines will likely be influenced by the main plot line etc but allow the characters to puruse their own goals and ambitions.

Usually time can be a luittle flexible between personal stories and main storylines. I am sure ST won't mind some creative disparity as long as it doesn't break or affect the mains otry line to much. I posted for Emily so that you could have a bit more insight to her character and so that when the next main story beat picks up she wont have to spend time asking what happened in character and thansk to Nefs asssitance she now has a way of contacting member of the group and developing a rapport despite being new to the scene.

If you know anything about the sects at all then you would be expected to attend court when you first arrive as even the Anarchs who settle will have to do so. If a kindred does not announce them selve there will be many questions as to why they are trying to keep themselves unknown and the elders and princes tend to be very paranoid (and for good reason).

You could have literally popped in once said your name and clan then never tunred up again. so long as you attended mandatory court dates they would probabaly leave you alone if you are not doing any harm.

Was Throckett given any knowledge by his sire or was he turned then abandoned? Most princes will see you not annoncign yourself as a slap in the face and disrespect at best, juding by what we know of Sasha she would not have let that stand haha If throckett new what domains and princes were there is a good chance he would have been tld about that as though annoying  is it the first thing a kindred should do when entering a new domain to keep everyone happy.

Sorta. He was a victim of a classic (not vtm specific) "old vamp takes over and terrorizes a small town". Think 'midnight mass' or 'salem's lot'. He was an unwitting tool, and was turned to distract some hunters from attacking his sire.

Throckett miraculously survives, believes that his "misunderstood savior was unjustly persecuted" and simply left town. He's been mostly coasting off Malk visions, pure luck, and the fact that he still mostly passes for (and still tries to pass for) human. Enough of that would have been explained to the Prince to explain this malk showing up outa nowhere.

Of course once the whole VTM world is summarized to Throckett he would have towed the line.

Yup. I was vague about the details, but either Throckett was in the right place at the right time, or he simply convinced the old man to step down. Then transformed the church to its current state in the few years he was in charge.

I like that Reverend Throcket and Emily are characters that get better as you know them, and Nefertari mixes mystery with knowledge.  Whereas Rook seems to be more interesting the more questions one has about him.

Oh? Are there areas where they frequent? Throckett would love to see the faces that seem to represent each sect in Shadowhold.

If that isn't common knowledge I could always pay the mysterious Rook a visit, or see if Ms. Chalmendelais knows someone who knows someone.

Dr. Fairrivers is usually at the hospital working, or doing a blood drive at the mall. Lucretia is usually somewhere on seedy row, and Nina's usually at the chantry or at the Wicked Sorceress.

That's true of lasombra as technology doesn't doesn't work well around them and there voice is always distorted and weird over the phone and cameras pick up weird static around them etc.

All the other clans there appears to be no effect on them using thecnology unless you have the flaw stating you do not know how to use it :D

Rodger, I wasn't absolutely sure but I'll keep to the whole "Rural Priest doesn't into new tech all that much". It plays up the rather naivety that Throckett exudes.
