The stairs are cramped and narrow, leading down into the darkness.  The dust on the stone steps is clearly disturbed by three sets of footprints, one set leads up, and two sets lead down.  The corners of the ceiling are choked with ancient dusty cobwebs, and the stairwell is narrow and treacherous.  Stagnant air wafts up out of the cool moist depths, bearing the smell of earth...and something else.

"John, you are the footprints guy. What can you tell us??"

"Just trained in bush craft is all. Hard to make alchemy if you don't know poison from medicine." He did get down and take a look.

Shosuro Akira moves forward, interposing himself between John and the footprints and whatever can be ahead.

Ryu also watches over the investigator too, with his crossbow ready.

GroupYou see John bend down to look at the boot prints.  You also note that the stairs descend another 40 feet or so into the darkness.

John You look at the boot prints. You can tell that the set that goes up and one set that go down are the same but the second set that descend are different.

Actions

John tilted his head side to side, "Well, I can tell you that the set here that came and went are the same person and the single set that went down but never came back up belong to someone else entirely. Both went this way." He thought about mentioning a joke saying one just finished reading a really nice story and loved the color blue, but that was a joke for less serious times.

Onward he went.

"Behind me, John." Shosuro Akira tells him. He is a warrior and John not. He should be first and descends into the unknown.

Sakura also steps forward, following Akira with her weapon readied.

Ryu keeps holding the torch and following them down.
