101b-IC Leaving the Shire

Mip Tanglefoot was quite excited, and maybe a little anxious?
As Spring was about to show its nice fresh nose, and flowers prepared their buds, he and his mother were off to the Spring Fair in Bree.
Yes, way out there, far far-away faraway to the East, near the edge of the World!
What an adventure it would be.
The crates of his mother's good were packed in straw and stowed in boxes.
Mip's father helped put them on the mules, but he has to stay behind, he says:
"Gardening won't do itself, you know?!"

But, not to fear, the Tanglefoot mother and son will not be alone.
There is a group of people of to the Festival.
And a gardener friend of the father, Hamfast Gamgee, is coming along with his wife Bell, Bell Gamgee, who was born a Goodchild... and who is now about to deliver a good child into this year!
Aye, it will be the happy couple's first infant.

The Gaffer, as Hamfast is known, reassures father Tanglefoot:
"Master Bilbo said he would take care of my garden, so I can take care of your family out in Bree, among the tall-folk. Good thing Master Bilbo likes gardening, for I promised my Bell a nice dress, and fine cloth for making baby clothes!"

Bell smils, her hands proudly resting on her pregnant-belly.

But, it is about time to go-- only have to have second-breakfast and lunch and then out the door it is!

Off to Bree!

Mip still couldn't believe it.
He was about to see the whole wide world.
Tall folk !
Maybe even some Elven folk, something he always dreamt about.
Oh yes, it is going to be the adventure of his life-time.

"Let's not forget about lunch", he reminded himself.
No need to starve before getting to Bree.
Another cutlet landed on his plate along with some potatoes and other vegetables he couldn't identify-
His mum was watching, no less....

Mrs. Tanglefoot, 'mum', sighed. She did not understand her son. She had tried hard to raise him well, and, there, he went and did odd things once again.
Why did he choose a smaller sized cutlet? When there are nice bigger ones right there?

After finishing his third cutlet Mip was eager to leave. He waited with the mules.
Soon he got lost in his day-dreams.
He had very few possessions with him.
Some provisions, of course, but nothing else.
Besides a small barrel of beer stowed away carefully.

Three cutlets... oh, her son was not doing odd things, he was outsmarting her. Oh, what a clever Hobbit!
She smiled, and gave him a fourth cutlet as a prize!

As Mip stows away his a small barrel of beer, he glances at Bell, the Gaffer's wife, and hopes she will not get any of those cravings and want to empty his fine ale casket!

Mip started to whittle on some small branch he just picked up. Having a little flute to play on while being on the road would be nice.

A flute was nice, but Mip did not have that much time to play it.
So much to simply look at!
What a trip, what an adventure.
First off, Whitfurrows. Okay, that was just East of Frogmorton, but, still, one does not go to the next village that often.
But, then, the Brandywine Bridge! A big contraption that crosses a river. Now Mip understood why a bridge was needed. People actually do need to go somewhere sometimes and a bridge makes things easier.
And then, of course, the road... the road all the way to Bree!
The scary Old Forest to one's right.
Hills to one's left.
And the road ahead, the road behind.
An adventure is quite an adventure.

And then, the place where the road ends.
For the road cannot go ever on, that would be foolish.
The group of Hobbits from the Shire, with Pip and his mom, the Gaffer and his expecting wife, all arrive at the faraway town of Bree, the other end of the world.

Such a strange place, what with having a wall around it!
Are they trying to keep people out-- in?

The name of the door you pass, would they call it the West Gate? No-- the Rangers' Door!
Rangers?
That would be like calling the Brandywine Bridge the Robber's Bridge!

Then you move into the town-- so many people. And all so tall?
And the buildings!
Not only do they not burrow nice holes, they - craziness - elevate their houses!

Mip was simply overwhelmed. So many new impressions.
What strange buildings! How could one live 10 or more feet above !! the ground.
And all these tall people.
He really had to take care not getting overrun by these people, they didn't seem to notice him, not at all.
Mip stayed closed to his mother, he figured it much safer.

Tagging along behind his mother, Mip moves into town, and soon arrives at the town center, which is actually quite to the West of Bree.
An off-center center? Man-folk!

Your group of Hobbits move up to the inn of The Prancing Pony.
From the front, the inn looks like a pleasant house, especially at the end of a long journey.
It faces on to the road along one side of the Green, where it is obvious the Fair is about to begin: colorful stall and tents and so many people getting ready...
The inn has two wings run back, cut in to the hillside-- where it seems there are Hobbit-rooms!

A wide archway leads off the road and into a courtyard.

As the Hobbits stand there, outside the inn, with its signboard showing a fat, white pony rearing up and ‘The Prancing Pony’ in white letters, people come and go around them. Most entering, but some exiting.
Mainly tall Mannish folk, but some Dwarves too.
The Gaffer looks to Mip's mom-- but the Hobbits seem a bit shy, and dare not enter yet.
They look to Mip-- will he be young and bold enough to lead them in? You do smell food a-cooking inside!

"Well, Mum, it is getting late and we can't spend the night out here. I could lead the way if you come along. I mean, I have your back, haven't I?"

His voice is trembling a bit, he really hopes no one was listening to that.

"They do love some good cooking, I can smell it!"

Where is a hungry stomach there is a way or such (old Hobbit proverb).

Mip finally enters the tavern with a quick look back over his shoulder to make sure everybody else was following especially him Mum.
