001-OOC General OOC

I asked about lists of useful items on the TOR Discord and someone pointed to this post on Free League's forums: https://forum.frialigan.se/vie...=Useful+Items#p64490

Very nice!
Someone will make a nice booklet I am sure.
I'll see about putting that list here for reference.

So what are everyone's expectations for the game? What parts of it are you looking forward to? For me I really like how the TOR 2e mechanics core is about building on that Lord of the Rings feeling and it'll be relly interesting to see if we can make it work together.

The journey system seems really nice, it looks like a good way to make the journey a part of the adventure instead of something that's just hand-waived.

The Fellowship Focus thing seems cool but I'll wait to choose anyone until we've all met and travelled together for some time. To let it grow organically like, I guess.

In reply to Orodil (msg # 42):

I was thinking of the same things, to be completely honest.

I'm hoping to get my guy finished tonight, sorry for the delay.

Do you mean TOR 2e vs. TOR 1e? (because I felt TOR 1e worked very well for that already).

The journey system seems really nice
I think that might have been what made me like TOR so much. That the game rules made simply moving from A to B so interesting.

The Fellowship Focus
My personal experience (both as GM and player) is that players do not use that very much. I might be wrong, but my feeling is that metagame-wise players felt you "only" get a bonus to helping others, and you can get a drawback (Shadow) to your own PC!

The Journey rules seem similar to other Free League games such as Forbidden Lands and Mutant Year Zero.  Definite plus.

Honestly my only expectation is to enjoy collaborating on a story using some new rules.  I'm willing to give any and all of them a try.  Worst thing that happens is my character dies. /shrug

My expectation-- or rather: my Hope (and my Heart is high!) is that your characters do not die.
But that they retire and you continue the Adventure with the heirs they sired or chose!

(I am moving back to TOR after 2 years of Alien RPG-- so I have died and killed PCs for a lifetime!)

I never played 1e either so I'll take your word for it.

Honestly I just mentioned this because it was touched upon in a different thread. We'll see then.

Lol, Alien is on my to-play list with my RL group but now I don't know if I want to play or GM.

You can still pick up the .pdfs and/or books!

Alien is on my to-play list with my RL group but now I don't know if I want to play or GM.
I really love Alien RPG. It is a very simply system, but with a Panic mechanic that is super fun (you spiral into fear and lose control of your character in a way).
The Cinematic mode (made to emulate the films, where things are rather rough, and you normally play Pre-Gens that have secret agendas-- tailored to conflict with other PCs) is very nice. I normally really hate player vs. player actions, but in this case it works very well (also, when a PC moves into PvP/PK - which does not happen on a whim but because of RP reasons linked to goals etc. - that PC becomes an NPC at the end of the scene. So you do not have people doing away with another PC and benefitting from it). Anyhow, if you can play cinematics like Chariot of Gods, I feel it is worth it.

I should be done with the sheet for my guy - looking forward to getting into things!
Cool!

Re: 001-OOC General OOC

Seeing the players & PCs and how things are getting going, I have planned out a series of possible events.
I would most probably be using elements from:
Cubicle 7 First-Edition
• the fan-made Theft of the Moon by Jacob "Zed" Rogers
• the Dragontide part of the Lake-town supplement
• Old Bones and Skin from the Bree supplement
Free League Second-Edition
• The Star of the Mist from the basic rulebook

Please tell me if there is one of those that you a (truly) familiar with (so I can see about changing things around).

In reply to The Loremaster (msg # 52):

Not particularly familiar with any of those adventures. Like as not I have skimmed the majority, but not enough to retain any real details. And even if I did, I would merely ask how the Loremaster wanted me to play into those bits so as to make the best story. Am all about the teamwork.

001-OOC General OOC

I was just asked: "I notice that they don't have anything for dancing.  Would Athletics work?"
And it is true-- dance is nearly not mentioned at all (only with Song to make people dance!).
My answer would be that you can choose which skill depending on the circumstance and your goal.
I would rule that:
• if you are a Dwarf trying to dance a Hobbit-waltz, you might roll Lore (to see how well you know the steps and moves of their culture)
• if you are really trying to follow the tempo and move & sway to the music, you might roll Song
• and, yes, Athetics if you are out there, clapping hands, and spinning and twirling and making a show of it...
Posting this to say that in general I am open to people offering RP reasons to do this or that (though, if I do not agree on something, even I'm wrong, I would really like to not debate about it - unless life or death or whatever).

Courtesy would be my first choice for dancing, as that encompasses the social graces. And naturally Folk-lore works to one's advantage, given it is all about customs and tradition. The question ultimately comes down to why. Why are you dancing? Are you doing it to make a good impression? Courtesy. Are you doing it to gain a better understanding of someone? Insight. Are you doing it to provide a distraction for your comrades? Awe. Are you doing it to raise someone's spirits? Enhearten.

Re: 001-OOC General OOC

You roll the Feat die (basically 1d12-1) and a number of Success dice equal to your skill value, looking to equal or exceed your character's Target Number. You can spend a point of Hope to get a bonus Success die, or two bonus Success dice if your character is Inspired (which can be achieved by invoking one of the character's Distinctive Features or certain Cultural Virtues). Furthermore, one other member of the Company can spend a point of Hope to give you a bonus Success die in support of your effort. They must have at least one point in an appropriate skill, and the Loremaster has final say as to whether circumstances allow the support to be given.
