Orodil uses the terrain to his advantage as he makes his way to the ambush site, draws steel and waits for the orcs.

OOC: Indeed the ambush site would be well out of earshot from the larger orc force.

Mip is shaking to his bones, they are really engaging an orcish army.
With merely no wepaons and no armor and no breakfast he is feeling naked, starved and frightened.

He then decides to become a tree.

The two Orcs who arrive down the path, are wearing leather armor covered with various plates of newly forged shiny armor.
A spear in hand, they have a scimitar on their belt.
Both seem to be very strong.
Orodil sees an opening for Biter--
--but, as he assesses the enemy... he sees that one of the two Orcs has a horn on a lanyard around its neck.

Orodil grabs his bow, waits until the orcs are in position, signals the others to be ready and then lets loose at the orc carrying the horn.

OOC: I'll use a fellowhip point to roll favoured for the opening volley if that's ok with everyone.

As the Orcs approach, walking along the path that so intrigues them, in the high grass--

--Orodil steps out and fires an arrow at the Orc he spotted carrying a horn.
Eye 10+3 = 13 vs. 12: hit & possible wound
The arrow slams into the Orc-- but it has the sturdy shiny armor, and the breastplate blunts the arrow, not letting it pierce flesh.
Horn-bearer takes 3 damage
But the Orc does grunt-- hurt.

Surprised, it, and its companion just remain there, bug-eyed, unable to react.

Galar's arrow goes whistling past-- lost in the plains...

Vidar moves back to go help Homnir with the ponies, to make sure no Orcs overtake you and get to your mounts and stores.

Aredhel & Mip slip out into the grass, to cut off any Orcs that might come as reinforcements.

Orodil and Galar engage the pair of Orcs. The two Enemy are glancing around, and realize what is going on, but are still caught by surprise and are too slow to act--
You can choose your Stances, and roll your attack or actions.
If you aim for the horn, it is a very hard target, thus -2 dice to your roll.

Orodil drops his bow and leaps forward, Biter in a firm 2-handed grip and strikes at the orc, trying to hit the horn as well. "Don't let them call the others!" he calls out to Galar.

Galar swings his axe at the Enemy with the horn, hitting the Orc with a powerful hit, his axe-blade biting into the Orc's armor--
Hit for 6 with Heavy Blow 4 = 10 damage ; Gandalf threatens a Wound w. 18TN
--though the Enemy reacts by pushing hard against the blow, the axe slices into the leather part of the armor, biting deep into the Orc, drawing blood.
It's chest cut, the Orc-- topples over, dying...

Vidar moves out of the grass to enter the fray, and swings his mattock at the other Orc, and the heavy weapon comes down in a Heavy Blow, battering the last standing Enemy.
7 from Mattock + 7 from Heavy Blow +1 from 2H weapon & Heavy Blow = 15 Damage
Badly hit, the Orc reels from the powerful blow-- but manages to remain standing.

From the back, Aredhel fires an arrow into the fray, but, not wishing to hurt a Companion, is too cautious and cannot hit the Orc.
Miss

The Orc badly hit by the Dwarf glances at the foes it has just encountered-- and then, obviously strong and well-trained, it grabs the horn off the body of its fallen comrade and-- bringing the instrument to its mouth... lets out a long sound, that resonates out over the grassy field.

Orodil curses since their task just got a lot more difficult. They would soon have the entire host coming down on them. "Quickly now!"

He then smashes the remaining orc over the head.

OOC: Two questions. Is there any way to knock the orc prone or unconscious instead of killing it? And how long do we have before the rest of the orcs join us? The objective would be to either interrogate it before the others arrive or... I guess bring it with us? What do you guys think?

Calling out to the others, Orodil hits the remaining Orc over the head--

--as the Orc goes down, Galar's backswing misses, as its target is now on the ground!

Thanks for putting the info' up, it makes it a lot easier for me (not having to go check things for each - especially each sheet to check if Keen etc.).

Is there any way to knock the orc prone or unconscious instead of killing it?
I am quite sure there is nothing like that in the rules.
So, I will - for now(*) - simply say that if you want to make a non-lethal attack in melee(**) you can choose to (hit with the flat of the sword, the back of the axe etc.).
I will not try to invent any specific rules and simply say that if you reduce the enemy to 0 or Wound it, and you want that attack to be non lethal, you knock the enemy out.

(*): we can see how this works, and if we ever need to amend/change this.
(**): I will leave ranged attacks out of this, but, if you ever want, we can see if an attack with a spear might work--maybe having to get a Great Success?


So, Orodil can have knocked this Orc out if you wish.

And how long do we have before the rest of the orcs join us?
Probably not long.
The Orcs had moved away from the others, but are not more than a couple minutes away if the Orcs come running.

Galar does a quick search of the other orcs before grabbing the unconscious one and helping Orodil or the others carry it a distance away from the ambush site.
