Re: OOC chat

Hey guys sorry it's taking me a minute but I am trying to finish with my character soon. Hoping to have it done tonight. Again sorry for the delay.
Btw as for what I was thinking in regards to alchemist is I had a game where the dm let me collect recipes for a recipe book so that I could make a bunch of different potions using the alchemist kit. These potions included some healing and several different types of others as well all of which I had to go to different alchemists and apothecaries to collect. I was hoping I could get the gm here to let me do the same here, but I get it if that's a no. It is a bit of extra work.

Re: OOC chat

Up the the DM to say, but I'd suggest that is a LOT of work -- they'd had to know (or figure out on the fly) the recipe for every potion possible, keep track of them, work out the time and cost to make them, etc..  Lot of extra effort for what effectively amounts to a downtime activity.

That said, if you (@DM) want to go down this route, I'd suggest picking up these books:
https://www.dmsguild.com/brows...uthor=Jasmine%20Yang
  • Hamund's Harvesting Handbook, Vol 1
  • Hamund's Harvesting Handbook, Vol 2
  • Hamund's Harvesting Handbook, Vol 3
  • Hamund's Herbalism Handbook

Re: OOC chat

So, what's the consensus, please ?

Meaning : what's the easiest route for Nyx,
          considering we're on rpol,
          not around a table.

Re: OOC chat

Personally, I think Beargus' suggestion of reflavouring existing spells is the easiest route.

I'm reminded of the character Gern Blanston on Critical Role.  A wizard in the school of necromancy, but all of his spells were cast using candles carried by zombies or skeletons.

quote:
https://criticalrole.fandom.com/wiki/Gern_Blanston
Dragonborn Wizard

Gern claimed to be a simple candlemaker, who made enchanted candles with different effects. Some simply produced light, while others "created tragedy for people."  Gern stated that he was enslaved by his own kind who had tails, whereas he did not, and so dedicated his life to weaponizing candles using their scales.  He used mainly dragon scales and not other parts, though he stated that seeing them get blown to pieces was "merely for pleasure."  After Thordak escaped from the Elemental Plane of Fire, devastating Cindergrove in the process, Gern arrived to gather materials for his spells.

One of the most memorable guest characters on the show.

Is this a side hustle or your character's main schtick?
If It is a side hustle, then it might be a bit much, but that is up to you and DM.

If this is your main thing then you should either look into taking levels in Artificier (Alchemist) or wizard (whatever/I suggest Abjurist). The wizard's spell book becomes a "receipt book" and the above suggestions from Beargus ans Gevi are sound.

I really like the idea of an Apothecary flavored wizard. The only real issue I see is with healing spells. In order to get those you need to either multiclass (not the best idea as Wizards are good at every level) or pick up Healer feat. The herbalism kit is designed this way already, no need to reinvent it, just reflavor it as part of your Apothecary studies.

Ultimately your going to have to choose between wizard spell progression/goodies and multiclassing. If you choose the later the obvious choice is Artificier, it works with same ability mod and gives a wonderful IC connection to Gevi.

Re: OOC chat

Have to agree with the reflavoring of existing wizard spells here, as a "alchemist" with his "recipy" book. Instead of studying your book in the long rest, you "prepare your potions" for the next day.

Like BIGs suggests, if you really want some healing, one or two level of artificer is the way to go, with two you can have a bag of holding and the alchemy jug... but you miss out on the wizard level 3 spells until a level up. Thoses spells are the reason Sharissa is sorc 5 warlock 1 at the moment, even if I want those invocations!

Or take the level 4 ASI for healer's feat, one of the best healing mechanism of the game, if not the best and cheapest

Re: OOC chat

GM, that is the way I've seen combat done in other games and it works well.

I did have a 21 perception check, and Cass a 23, didn't we see anything to warn the group of the coming ambush?

Anyone who rolled a high perception (20+) can allow themselves
a few extra seconds to prepare for the inevitable ambush.

Consider this a free round where you can't do anything to directly affect what I've already posted,
but you can do things to prepare yourself or your immediate surroundings.

(casting bless is ok, for example)

Re: OOC chat

well with my initiative roll, the extra round will not be very productive, I'll almost need to see the map at my turn to determine what I'll do, rolled the minimum I can have...

multiclassed 2 warlocks and 3 bards, that's a very charismatic group! We'll need to determine who will be the face of the party then.
