I havd 2 ideas. One is basically the same as Renard was, but different levels. L5 Hexblade, L1 Sword college. The other is L1 Sorcerer (devine or storm) and L5 Lore college.

After some thought I came up with something I really like:
L2 Hexblade
L4 Lore Bard
This is built around the idea of a 600' E.Blast (Eldritch Spear + Spell Sniper) and Find Steed which he gets @ Bard L6.
I took Knight of the Order as Background.

If doom29169-char is to be a knight,
maybe read up on the Solamnic Knights and the character Sturm from the novels.
Don't go crazy, just do a google search or check out the pdf files above.
