Chapter 1: Urvan Kron
I didn't know what to roll for the ability to wake up early intentionally, so I decided it was a survival roll. It makes sense to me, anyway, and it's an under-used skill otherwise. There's actually a trick to waking up early -- I guess I'll have Iwo tell you.
23:10, Today: Zag, on behalf of Urvan Kron, rolled 20 using 1d20+2. Survival roll to wake up early.
Urvan drops into his bed and becomes completely unconscious, in a healing sleep, for about 6 hours. When he awakes, his jaw, his head, and his muscles ache, but it is more the echo of the pain and not actually debilitating. Only his fingers, where the rats bit him, still hurt. They are turning red and are a little hot.
The boy slips out of bed and walks out into the central area between the two pages' dorms. He slips into the closet and through the secret door, then waits to be sure he has not been observed. Finally he makes his way to Iwo's room. As usual, Iwo is at the door, ready, when he knocks lightly.
"Well, you've had a busy night," Iwo says, without any sort of greeting. "I heard you came into the kitchen spitting blood, and with more blood on your knuckles." He takes the boy's hands and inspects them. "But I didn't hear about any fights among the pages. I assume some of the soldiers outside? By Mars, why were you fighting with them?" He drags Urvan to a cupboard where he pulls out a salve to put on the rat bites.
After Urvan explains the circumstances, Iwo nods and smiles. "Good, good. This is how they make friends, and they are good friends to have. Learn their names, bring them a bottle now and then, and they will be loyal and reliable. You can take them stuff the winemaster is ready to throw away, they will love it. Tell them you stole it, and they'll be even more grateful to you."
Urvan starts to report on his progress with the hounds, reading the book and learning so much, but Iwo waves him off. "For this task, I do not want partial reports. Let me know when you are ready." The boy reports on the rats, and Iwo nods and murmurs something that sounds vaguely like, "good work."
Finally, Urvan proudly explains how to was able to wake himself up to come here in the middle of the night, but Iwo shakes his head. "It worked this time, boy, but it is not reliable. If you ever have to be sure to wake yourself up after a few hours sleep, drink a lot of water, as much as your belly will hold, before you lie down. Your bladder will wake you up. This works every time, as long as you aren't drunk. If you're drunk, you'll just piss your bed."
Using this trick will get you +4 on the survival roll for that purpose only, AND it will allow you to take a 10, so it will be guaranteed unless you need quarter-hour precision.
