Urvan has escaped discovery after killing two men, one of them innocent of any crime other than having learned Urvan's terrible secret, a secret he does not really know himself.  He approaches the back of Ten Forward, an inn he recognizes from his earlier cursory sweep of public houses; the architecture has distinctive lines, swooping to sharp points rather than having right angle corners.

Continuing directly away from Temple Road and the grisly scene of his own crime, Urvan rounds the back corner of the building to be greeted by an enchanting odor that makes his stomach clench in anticipation.  Behind the building is a large roasting pit with several spits on it, each holding three or four chickens.  A man and a girl of 10 or so watch the roasting birds; the girl moves forward and turns each of the spits a quarter turn.
